I need some serious recommendations because so far the food here is good but not nearly the level of Houston.

What are you looking for? There's plenty of God restaurants in Austin.
Houston is one of the top food cities in the country right now, and I am familiar with them. so, obviously i am going to be biased.

what i want to know is where is the good authentic Mexican restaurants. not just TexMex. where's the menudo?
where's the real barbacoa?

Asian - Uchi/Uchiko are legit props to Austin for that. Sway was very nice for thai style. but, is there any Vietnamese worth a damn?

Steaks- where is the best? so far there's nothing close to Houston Pappa's, V&A's, etc.

Best burger in town? in Houston, I know where to go.

Menudo = la michaocana
Asian=Tan My, Din Ho, Ramen tatsu-ya
Steak=hofbrau, Austin land and cattle
Burger=hopdoddy, counter cafe, jewboy, billy's, hula hut

The 2 for $20 deal at applebee's is the same in Austin as Houston.

I don't get the sense that you do want serious replies. You have been pretty dismissive of most restaurants and "Austin" things since you showed up on the board. That's fine, it isn't for everyone, I would rather live in Kansas than Houston, but it isn't Orla, TX either.

^^^^^ the food in Austin would be great if only the weather here was better than Houston.

Tried Russian House on Friday. Never had Russian Food before but that was some good eats.

Also did EastSide Tavern for late lunch and beers yesterday. I like that place.

2 for 2 on new places this weekend.

Alright ags...2 new places.....

Boiler no. 9....Seaholm District next to Trader Joe's....we had the small plates on our first visit...their ribs were good, not great. Beer bread was great...especially with the IPA jam they served it with. Roasted cauliflower with grapes was also excellent. Definitely hitting this spot to try more things. Try to get seated by the bar...the "chef's table." We tried a lot of other things he was just messing with.

Tillery Street...east Side spot with an incredible patio right on the water. Ambiance couldn't have been better. Greek salad was good, not great. But the Pappardelle with asiago cheese and pork confit may have been one of my favorite dishes in the ATX. Cocktails also good. Highly recommend this place.

There is a great burger to go place in Cedar/Park on Bagdad just north of New Hope. It is an Exxon station of all places, but the food is great.

Tried Jewboy. It was very good, loved the potato latkes. For me, not Billys or Hopdoddy

Wife and I went to East Side Tavern for a late lunch today. Split the brisket tots and and the brisket patty melt. Food was really good. We'll definitely go back.

Bit out of the way for some, but recently bought in Cedar Park and we're loving Blue Corn Harvest out here. Bit more southwestern than TexMex and really tasty, try the 512 Pulled Pork Enchiladas.

That being said, as a Houston transplant I'm still looking for some really good TexMex in Austin. Have tried a good number of places and been underwhelmed, Matt's El Rancho didn't live up to the hype for sure. Suggestions?

Cheap TexMex: Enchiladas y Mas (cheap and good)
Our other go-to TexMex: La Mancha (typically easy, no wait, decent TexMex)

Recently went to, and would recommend: La Cocina de Consuelo (byob, good home cooked food)

ETA: Santa Rita. If nothing else, it's good for watching the sip sorority girls, but also good fajitas and drinks.

While not exactly Tex-Mex, more Interior type Mexican, El Chile, Alcomar, El Alma, Curra's, Polvo's, and Taco Flats may meet your needs.

+1 on Conseulas Cocina. I've only had a breakfast taco, much larger than the typical Austin taco, and the tortilla was fantastic.

I hear you on steaks because all the best places are chains, much like the ones you listed.

Vietnamese...go north on Lamar off 183. That's the "Vietnamese" section of town.

Burgers....Austin honestly has the best anywhere. Counter Cafe is my favorite, but Hopdoddy, Luke's Inside Out, Casino El Camino, Jackelope, Wholly Cow, Hat Creek, Dan's....I could go on and on. A surprisingly great burger is at Dai Due but only on Tuesday evenings. Lucky for you today is Tuesday.

Thanks, will put em on the list.

Taco Flats was actually on Michael Symon's show on Food Network last week, looked really good.

funny thing is, my buddy from Houston always claims there's no good mexican food in Austin. We go to mexican food joints in houston with him every time we are in town. And while some are good, none have blown me away. I think Enchiladas y Mas is better than anything he's taken me to in Houston.

i'm thinking its just some hometown pride on both sides.

Next time you're in Houston just tell him you need fillet fajitas at El Tiempo

(but quite possible on your theory)
