+1 on amayas

This place is awful. Have one decent thing, the puffy tacos. Salsa and chips are terrible. Go to Angies on E. 7th I believe. She worked at Amayas then left 20 years ago. Great food, chips and salsa are some of the best ever (if you like spicy), and service is so-so just like every other really good Mexican place.

Taco Deli for fusion tacos.

FWIW, I like them better than Torchy's.

I really love Angies on East 7th. Great, great tex mex enchiladas.

Torchy's is awesome, get the trashy trailer park. A little on the expensive side, espeically for drinks, but well worth it.
Avoid Fuzys, super cheap drinks, but the worst food ever, tastes like it came out of a garbage disposal, and the margaritas are so sour it's unberable. But they have stupid cheap drink specials throughout the week.
Chuy's is awesome.
Baby A's is great as well.
Go to Hula Hut if you're on a date, great food and atmosphere. Good drinks as well.

Rogelio Gonzalez is the best Mexican in Austin. Very considerate person. Sure he's undocumented, but he's very law-abiding otherwise.

Texas University is a malignant cancerous growth. We were fortunate to get it removed and we want to stay in remission.

Those tacos are pretty awesome. Wouldn't waste my time with anything else there unless they realize that their migas should be made with those tortillas.

Angies have similar puffy tacos? Haven't found one in Austin yet that is better than Amaya's

Yes. Much better. If you like Amayas, I promise you will love Angies.

El Naranjo has Interior Mexican food as well. Very good but they are pricy

#1) Joe's Mexican Cafe & Bakery on East 7th, bar none. Greasy, delicious, classic. One of the oldest restuarants in Austin, period.

There are very few places in Austin that I would put above a 7 or 8 on a 10 point scale in terms of Mexican food, but I am from San Antonio. Plenty in the 5-7 range though.

I usually end up at Flores or Chuys but neither is exceptional. Juan in a Million isn't bad for a homestyle place.

Still, I doubt most Austin Mexican food places would stay in business 100 miles South.

Abuelo's - I always forget about that place. It's ok too, just very forgettable. Had Taco Deli for lunch today, man what a line.

I don't get the Tacodeli love. Got a breakfast taco once and it was horrible. Cold stiff tortilla and bland eggs.

We had to get the famous Mr V breakfast tacos for his birthday in his last year of teaching at Eanes Elementary. Not wanting to fail, we tried every breakfast taco in Austin.
Taco Deli had the best by far. Now, we just get the blue plate special for lunch. I used to lunch there when at Intel. Now that they built one on the west side, we lunch there often. I don't know what kind of breakfast taco you ordered, but we didn't try anything that wasn't great. Admittedly, I haven't had their breakfast tacos in two years, so maybe they went downhill. We do not usually eat breakfast tacos.

I wish more people felt the same about Taco Deli, the lines are ridiculous.

Wife and I tried to go to Enchiladas y Mas Friday night. Girl at the hostess station said probably a 30 minute wait so we decided to go elsewhere. Ended up at Maudie's at the triangle. I feel like Maudie's is too expensive for the quality of the food.

Maudie's AWFUL
Chuy's BAD
Torchy's BAD

Pollo Regio BEST
Serrano's GOOD (downtown location is BAD)
Matt's El Rancho GOOD

Agree with Habanero Cafe on Oltorf.

Azul Tequila, Sazon & El Meson for interior Mexican.

Not much of an atmosphere but they step up to the plate consistently with their food.

I live in Fort Worth now and have seriously considered driving to Taco Deli for lunch on the weekend.

Don't listen to anyone that has Serrano's above Torchy's. That's retarded stupid.

Torchy's is hipster Mexican food that tries to be Mexican food.

And Serranos is great authentic Mexican huh? You recommend Chili's burgers over Counter Café and Rudy's over Franklin's for BBQ?

EDIT: typo

Never said it was authentic and I've had Franklin's before and never again will I wait 3 hours just to eat BBQ. That's beyond Fing stupid!

Overall - Chuys

Fajitas - Lupe Tortilla are the best, I'd put Chuys 2nd.

Enchiladas - Santa Ritas, Rosie's Tamale house also has really good cheese enchiladas but not as consistent.

Tortilla Soup - Hands down Chuys

Wouldn't call it the best but the margarita, spinich (sic) queso blanco, and maria's enchiladas at El Caribe are pretty good.

Now if only someone could tell me where to get good El Paso style red enchiladas or a good Chicos clone.
