The statement from the city is interesting because it says that it's cancelling programs like swim lessons due to potential escalation of ICE activity.

I'm glad they're keeping children safe but who is doing the escalating?
They should be stopping those people, instead of preventing kids from learning to swim.

After raids at he Home Depot yesterday in Burbank, it looks like ICE is branching out from DTLA where we saw all the protests during the past few weeks.

These people having freakouts seriously need to stop acting like getting deported is a death sentence.

Deporting these folks is simply sending them back to where they came from and giving them a chance to reconsider their actions. Of course they can always self-deport and eliminate all the drama but where's the fun in that.

The number of cities in America that offer swim lessons rounds to all of them. It's a pretty short walk from having popular things like parks and playgrounds and pools to teaching kids the important life skill of how to use them. A really odd thing to hate on, if you ask me.

Maybe (granted I don't have kids, but even so that doesn't change my opinion)... I see it as not trusting any random kid they hired for the local pool to teach my kids something that can absolutely cost them their life. I used to be a lifeguard at a city pool; one of the smaller independent municipalities around Houston. We had some damn good lifeguards and some that I wouldn't trust to stare at dog ****. The city that I worked for did offer swim lessons. They weren't free, it was $10/half hour and was independently arranged between individual guards and their clients. The city only facilitated it and let the clients into the pool for free for the lessons. Some guards like myself quickly became recommended and stayed busy stacking side cash. Others well... Did not find their services to be in high demand.

Are there probably some folks in that City program that absolutely would be great swim instructors? Oh I'm sure of it. There are great teachers in some public schools as well. But overall I think many would agree that public schools are a disaster.

It was a half serious, half sarcastic comment that I now find myself baited into justifying. Like all things in life you get what you pay for, and sometimes the necessary quality comes at a price. Swimming lessons are certainly important and I hope those involved seek quality.

City Parks & Rec Department in a mature city.
It's actually a pretty cool thing to have available for parents and kids.
Also a good place for youth to work summer jobs.

Local school or city or county hosting swim lessons is great use of government.

Federally funded and excuted swim lessons is going to be so bloated and corrupt you light as well be throwing buckets of money in with the children and seeing which one floats

If the parties were reversed, it would be considered racist profiling to cancel events for fear of ICE.

I feel like this is less to virtue signal or help illegals, and more to give people a fear of ICE, and the feeling that Trump is intruding on their everyday lives. Make ICE feel like Trumps secret police that should be feared and avoided at all costs, whether or not you're a citizen.

The goal is to scare people and further condition them to being anti-ICE. Not to actually help anyone. Same playbook as cancelling March Madness because of a weak ass cold virus.
