We have been enjoying farm fresh unpasteurized milk from a vendor that is at the Bryan farmer's market, but demand is up and supply is down. Does anyone know of any other vendors in the Brazos County area?

Don't think there are any farms in Brazos county. There's one up around cause that sells it and I believe they come to Bryan also. 4c

That's the one I was referring to in my OP. The secret is out and they are selling out for the week the instant it comes on the market. Great family and products there BTW.

Raw milk has skyrocket in popularity recently. Definitely need more farms in the area. I think there is so much paper work involved, that it scares people away from selling.

if you give the cattle penicillin or something , if I remember what a friend said that parents had a farm they had to dump the milk for a bit so that would not be in it. I got hives from this one time from Milk from a Dairy

Honest question - Given the risk of foodborne illness, including bird flu, are the benefits that significant from consuming raw milk versus pasteurized? Do humans really need cow's milk at all?

Raw milk isn't a new invention. Humans have been drinking it for thousands of years.

No one needs to drink milk if you eat a well rounded diet.

I used to have a Jersey milk cow and I would milk it daily and we would drink the milk. Would just shake it up to mix in the cream. It's ok. Not worth the work.

I see serious raw milk folks like anti-vaxers and doomsday preppers.

It is delicious. And I am not anti-vax or a doomsday prepper.

Raw milk from isolated cows is safe. The problem is that the cows are not isolated anymore.
My family always drank pasteurized milk and we ran a dairy farm.

Well gosh, don't give it to anyone under 5 or over 65, or pregnant. E. coli from cow poop is no joke.

Also, isn't bird flu in some cows now (but not Brazos county yet but just a matter of time). Apparently that spreads in milk from infected cows but is killed by heat.

I guess you can buy it and boil it yourself but why?

I've never noticed pasteurization changing the taste esp low temp. I do like non-homogenized though.

Here's a thought, if you don't want to drink it, don't.

If someone else wants to, that's their business.

Novel concept.

I drink milk out of the cow the same day for 18 years and never had an issue.

Probably 95% of what we drink and eat is not needed.

About all we really need is about 1,200 calories or so and a balanced diet of a piece of lean cooked chichen, a couple of handfulls of various nuts, and a service of fruit and veggies and a few cups of water.

I'm not saying it is dangerous, and I recognize that some like it better.
I think it funny that there are a lot of raw milkers that do it for the improved nutritional value, immunologic value, avoid big ag/pharma stuff, etc…

I've seen folks selling at the farmers market in Bryan and College Station.

How, specifically, is that funny?

There are some potential benefits but, for me at least, they do not stack up to be enough to risk food born illness. You need to have a really good farmer connection to be confident in raw milk and I'm not willing to go through that much hassle for the small amount of milk I consume regularly.

----snip---
Raw milk advocates claim numerous health benefits, but scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited and controversial. Some potential benefits of raw milk include:

1. Nutritional content: Raw milk contains proteins, fats, vitamins (A and D), and minerals (calcium, potassium, and iron)[2][4].

2. Reduced allergy and asthma risk: Some studies suggest that raw milk consumption in childhood may be associated with lower rates of asthma and allergies[1][3][5].

3. Respiratory health: Early life consumption of raw milk has been linked to a reduced risk of respiratory infections and fever by about 30% in some studies[3][5].

4. Digestive enzymes: Raw milk contains enzymes like lactase, which may aid in digestion, particularly for those with lactose intolerance[1][4].

5. Probiotics: Raw milk contains beneficial bacteria that may support gut health[1].

6. Fatty acids: Raw milk, especially from grass-fed cows, contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and omega-3 fatty acids, which have been associated with various health benefits[4].

However, it's crucial to note that health agencies like the FDA recommend drinking only pasteurized milk due to the potential risks associated with raw milk consumption[2][7][8]. The claimed benefits of raw milk are not scientifically proven, and pasteurized milk provides similar nutritional benefits without the associated risks[2][6][7][8].

Because there is no empirical proof that it is nutritionally better.

I saw a vendor at the Downtown Bryan Farmer's Market that had some this past weekend. I didn't catch the name/farm, though.
