We are spending money on this? Is there a large public demand for this?

Seeing as how the mods didn't like I phrased my last post, what really is the problem here?

Have you looked at the schedule for the community center? They host all kinds of various things.

Realistically, how much money is this wasting? Seems like it's not worth caring about.

I don't see the issue here. I don't play the game, but what's the problem?

It's a popular game and if they are playing the board game version, it relies on imagination and critical thinking.

This is the kind of thing that helps build community with other people in town. That's a bad thing?

I just read an article about Dungeon and Dragons being good for people with autism.

On the website. https://www.cstx.gov/departments___city_hall/parks/southwood

The D&D night is "supported by" a local game shop so I'm not sure that the city is waiting any money other than the utilities for the space. https://clockworkgaming.com/

Thanks for sharing this. Just sent it to my 17 year old who is interested in playing and has been looking for a group. There are worse things for people to do on a Friday night. Glad to see the city is doing fun activities like this. Now if we can just get the bottom of water tower painted by the S&W hospital I will feel like my tax dollars are being used well.

I have no issues with this. I'd rather the CoCS do this than play SimCity with taxpayers money

Here is a link that has more information. It's in the Featured section.

https://www.facebook.com/cityofcollegestation

It even has a little section that has the cost associated.

TY.

After reading the schedule there are very few of those I would support financially. I am way too fiscally conservative for most of that. Things that are practical (health, safety, etc) I am all for spending public dollars on, hobbies not so much.

You may be right as far as the very little spent, I am completely ignorant about D&D, so I will defer to those that know. From a pure demand, it seems like a stretch to provide though. To me anyways.

Being fiscally conservative and spending money on programs that build community are not diametrically opposed to each other.

There's a lot of people who play D&D and similar games. You probably know several at least. It's not just weirdos who live in their mom's basement. I don't play but I know doctors, lawyers, politicians, schoolteachers, and other professionals in this community that have or still play.

Not any different than offering space for someone to teach card games or dominoes. The community center is already built. No reason not to be using it.

A bunch of people that may have never met getting together for a night of common interest and fun....is NOT building community?

Do I have that correct?

And I won't deny that since I really don't know, just seemed odd to me. I am old enough to have been around the world. I have a ton of friends, who have kids and grandkids, and as far as I know I do not know one person who plays D&D. So the city funding it seems odd to me.

Conversely I know several people who fly fish, and I oppose us funding that as well.

It's probably just me, I am an old curmudgeon who doesn't want to fund most things.

But what is the city funding other than the space to host it? Which they are already paying for?

Would you rather not have the community center at all? What kind of things should it host if not things that community members are willing to fund?

Even though I may not play or be interested in D&D, I think that is a much better use of funds than the new $300K sign that is on the City Council agenda Thursday night.

Presentation, discussion, and possible action on a construction contract with Aria Signs and

Design for City Gateway Sign 3 (West) for $270,000, plus the City's contingency of $21,600 for
a total appropriation of $291,600
