What neighborhood do you honestly find so unsafe you "wouldn't even drive into after dark"? I can't think of one.
Last I checked...Bryan residents were actually taxed at a higher rate. Property values were just lower.Cooter Davenport said:
I'll throw in my .02 here as well. We moved down about 6 years ago. Here is my take.
Pros:
-Aggie sports. A family member can "shuttle" us to and from football games. Backroads can get us in or out in about 10-15 minutes.
-Big city feel. As others said, you have many amenities like a big city but it still feels like a smaller city.
-Parks. We never had parks where we came from and enjoy getting to use them.
-Close to Houston/Austin areas as others have said. The concert venues at Bernhardt and now Deep Roots winery nearby are great places to see good cover bands. Texas Flood, Already Gone, and The Spazmatics are must-see's.
-We have felt safe in our neighborhood since we lived here, but as someone said crime is moving southward. This is mainly thefts from vehicles, wheels, etc., not necessarily violent.
-Baylor Scott and White offers good care at both their clinic and hospital. The cardiologists there are all good. I had triple-bypass there.
-I don't have school-aged children but teach at CS middle school (7-8). I think we have a really good staff and administration. Our kids say they feel safe.
Cons:
-Taxes are higher than in Bryan.
-The current CISD board is "spend-happy" and "bond-happy"
-The drivers are terrible. Many will say it's the students, but from my experience it goes beyond that. Hardly anyone gives a signal. I could have an accident each day if I didn't drive defensively.
- South CS has been nice but it is becoming more crowded.
Sounds like you should move. Your cons seem to far out way anything good you noted. 'BISD demographics'....exactly what does that mean?Tumble Weed said:
Lived in College Station from 94-98 and 2008 till present.
Pros
It's green
Good restaurants
Decent shopping
Close enough to Houston, Dallas, and Austin for us.
Average Medical care for general issues.
Cons
More liberals here than you would think. I attribute it to the University professors. I live in a prof heavy neighborhood and about half of them are bed wetting libs. HOAs are a nightmare.
Traffic sucks.
Local government is amazingly inept.
High property taxes.
CSISD has lost their minds. BISD does not have the demographics that I would want for my kids. Basically have to home school or private school.
Have to drive to Houston for specialized medical issues.
Crime is marching south.
Isn't that what Poche's Seafood is?KidDoc said:Humidity is better than Houston but still an issue. More than I have time and caloric budget to visit regularly.Quantarius said:
not great restaurants, humidity is brutal, CSPD is awful.
good people overall
Tons of great restaurants not sure how you miss them.
Solt
Urban Table
Christopher's
Porters
Casa de Menange
Republic
Pochets
Shogun
Marfa
Maria Mia
Casa do brazil
Tons more. Only thing i would like is a dedicated seafood place.
I hadn't been to the dentist in quite awhile and figured they would tell me what you described and that was not the case at all.bobcat90 said:

I like Johnny, but Poche's raw bar has made me sick twice. Don't eat their oysters or shrimp. Their redfish is good when they have fresh redfish, but again, that's a big miss alot of the time or their kitchen doesn't understand how to prepare it. If Poche's were in Houston or anywhere along the gulf coast, it wouldn't last very long.
Fish Daddy's actually has legit gumbo, comparable to any southern Louisiana gumbo. I've not been disappointed with their other seafood dished other than the price. I generally only go there for the gumbo and a salad which is good and affordable.
I moved here about 1-1/2 years ago from League City, so I was very spoiled with seafood options for the past 30+ years. I haven't found anywhere that serves ceviche in BCS, which tells me fresh seafood just doesn't exist here. Even the HEB's around BCS have poor seafood options. You can't find fresh ahi, mahi, redfish, trout or seabass. The mongers basically say demand is low, so HEB doesn't bother sending it. The ahi that I've seen is not fresh whatsoever. On HEB runs, we have stuck to the center cut Atlantic Salmon and sometime the gulf shrimp when you can tell it's fresh.
As close to good fresh seafood as BCS is, apparently it just doesn't attract enough demand for fresh seafood.

I've enjoyed the trout at HEB. Grills up nicely with some shrimp!
I need to hit up Pochet more for sure. I don't due uncooked seafood so no worries there. I've seen too much infectious disease to do that.
