Don't dismiss Bryan as a viable option. A great selection of established, new and relatively new neighborhoods to look at. Also a couple of 'retirement' neighborhoods that are highly rated. Lots of growth and development in the area.

Agreed about Bryan - both E and W. East seems especially hot, although the incompetence of Wickson SUD rivals that of Wellborn SUD. Staying in the BTU water service of Oakmont etc might be best for now while hope stays eternal for us with Wickson and their stellar leadership and foresight…..

Worst: people want it to "grow". Ironically most come here to get away from Houston, but actively work to get it to grow.

Despite the growth and traffic and way too many students, our airline choices absolutely suck.

City council never seems to care about growing that!

Pretty sure Bryan and CS City Councils have zero influence on airlines coming to an airport that sits on university land.

A good number of the old Saab prop planes that Continental used to fly in and out of Eastereood got sold to a small airline (Silver) that connects Florida airports with destinations in the Carribean. I think that kind of service would do well here, connecting smaller airports in TOLA with the hubs, but that has not happened. I just drive to Austin or Houston to catch a plane now.

Their needs to be more for teens to do, it is improving lately though.

My main complaint was no live music events but that has radically changed in the last year with music coming to Bryan and the two nearby vineyards hosting music nearly every weekend.

Which two? Does Messina Hof have music on weekends?

I tell people that it is the best place in the world to live 2 1/2 months out of the year.
And it's even better during the 5 weeks between Fall and Spring semesters!

The only reason you may want to return to Houston is for doctor visits. Beyond that, low crime (people like the police here), good dentists, and the polite students.

Saw Deep Blue Something at the Ice House Sunday night.

But more would be better.

I appreciate the replies. My wife and I are considering a move from Houston following retirement, which might be in 2 - 4 years. Right now, we're just trying to understand some options. I haven't spent much time in B/CS since graduating in 1984, just a few 2-3 day business trips over the years. Some of our priorities would be relatively clean, secure neighborhoods with good access to quality healthcare. We're both Republicans and have grown tired of Houston. It's hard to believe how quickly this city has declined in just the past 10 years.
Since I hunt and fish, I don't view a few extra hours of drive time to the coast or south Texas as an obstacle.

We would welcome you back with open arms.

I find that people tend to clique with folks that they go to church with around here. I have a lot of acquaintances, and not a lot of friends, but also be prepared for a good amount of turnover in folks. The area tends to be somewhat transient.
If you have three to four person you call close friends, you have more than most people.

I just went to this place for the first time and had a great experience after seeing them recommended on another thread on this forum:

https://ericksondentalbcs.com/

My only complaint about this town is I'm a live music fanatic and there's rarely ever anything good here so I'm constantly going to Houston, Austin, and Dallas for shows.

ETA: Sorry I linked the wrong dentist.

I actually like the DFW connection flights. I used to fly United exclusively when I lived in Houston, but I was shocked how much more I like flying American.

Well that's depressing.

On that note and to the point of this thread, I've found BCS a pretty awesome place to make a diverse and eclectic set of friends. Made friends working in local businesses, at concerts, and of course through the Big School. It's been fun and educational meeting people here with wildly different views, politics etc, and happily arguing over a few beers.

Awful. Just recently an online order that was sent to them never came. And I'm quickly meeting my neighbors as we all get each others' mail and end up delivering ourselves. I went to the last Chamber of commerce meeting and it was a topic they're aware of. But yeah, usps doesn't pay enough so i don't think it matters where you are.

I guess it depends on the definition of "close friends." Off the top of my head, I would say a close friend that you do things with such as go multiple times on long vacations with, a friend that you would give most of your personal wealth to in a case of need, or a friend that you have known and you could tell any personal secret to without any judgement or care of what it is, or maybe a friend that is closer to you than family members.

I moved here from NW Austin in February of 23. I live in Austin's Colony and know all of my neighbors. I laugh when people complain about traffic and medians because I dealt with those for 25 years and the ones in these towns are nothing compared to what you have in Austin or Houston. I mean, I used to spend 40 minutes in my car to travel 5 miles every day. THAT'S TRAFFIC. Eating out and groceries are cheaper here which is really nice. The Tex Mex scene is top notch. I am lucky because I had friends(trouble) who convinced me that this was the place to be. She was right. When I need to travel for work, I'm a short drive to Houston Bush, Intercontinental Airport. I have found a church that I really love. It really has been a great experience to be here. I don't regret my move here whatsoever.

I started with an unserious answer, so here is my serious one:

GOOD:
-infrastructure is behind, but not as much as bigger TX cities.
-most parts are safer and cleaner than big cities.
-has gotten pretty good for eating, entertainment, etc
-cost of living isn't as high as some other parts of TX, though not the lowest either.
-public schools are decent, with decent private options.
-A&M provides a lot of sports and cultural opportunities.
-churches are in relatively good shape
-easy to get to big cities for large concerts, medical specialists, big airports, etc
-slower pace if life is easy to find, if you want it
-more diverse jobs and economic growth continue to be offered
-most folks are friendly and helpful still
-it is a place many want to raise kids or retire to
-economic growth is pretty highly valued by leaders so you can forecast more jobs

BAD :
-as in many places, our local politicians don't care about keeping taxes low
-sometimes have a small town good old boy network still running things
-medians suck
-restaurants fail at an amazingly high rate here
-crime, traffic, and cost of living are all going up fast
-the N/S orientation means getting from north Bryan to south College Station can take a long time.
-Students in neighborhoods sometimes are an issue for residents.
-Some folks have trouble finding jobs or significant others because we aren't a big city
-like any city, we have spots with higher crime and poverty
-rarely get big entertainment and have to connect or drive to fly from a big airport
-medical treatment in some specializations is limited
-summers can be miserably hot

I lived near Bee Caves off of 183 way back in the day and that's probably not even considered NW Austin anymore!

Traffic was bad then. Can't imagine what it's like now.

I would add there are several decent golf courses in a 30 minute drive radius if you are into that.
