Can you tell us what happened of Peter Baty and these charges?

His trial is scheduled to last from September 11th to September 13th. He's facing up to three years.

Four years later???

How is this taking so long?

Are there any additional charges for the alleged use of a state-owned van to run some rideshare customers around town?

His trial was originally set for March 2021, then September 2021, then June 2022, then January 2023, before its current setting, so it's been delayed four times. The court records don't say why it was delayed, but every delay except the June 2022 delay was because of the defense (the June 2022 delay was agreed to by both sides). He's charged with five counts of invasive visual recording and there's no additional charges for what you mentioned.

Thanks for the info. So is there a limit to how long the defense can push something like this out for? Does a judge eventually get fed up?
lethalninja

There's not an exact limit, but the judge could deny a motion for continuance if he felt that another delay wasn't warranted under the circumstances.

Can you see if there's any more public information associated with this lawsuit?

Damn, so five years. IF it doesn't get pushed back more.

His case is set for a preferential trial, so it has preference over all the other cases that week in the 85th District Court. This is the first time his trial has had a preferential setting, so it will probably happen this time.

Pete the Perv pled guilty today without an agreement and his sentencing hearing will start on June 21st. He'll remain out on bond until he's sentenced.

Wow. Finally seeing some resolution.

What sentence do you predict for him?
lethalninja
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm not sure, but he doesn't have a prior record and he's eligible for probation. It'll be up to the judge to decide.

Thanks for the update. Any guesses why someone would fight a legal battle this long, only to plead guilty with no agreement in place?

Hopefully his defense attorney milked him for all he could even though he didn't have a case.

I'm guessing the prosecutor offered him a plea deal involving incarceration, which is why he didn't reach a deal, but instead pled guilty in the hopes of getting probation (he probably would have taken a deal if it was for probation). He probably knew he didn't have a case, but he wanted to delay as long as possible, and when he realized his trial wouldn't get delayed again, he pled guilty.

For those of you wondering, he won't have to register as a sex offender, since the victims were adults.

His sentencing is still scheduled for tomorrow. I previously said he was facing up to three years, but I was reading the wrong law when I said that. He's facing up to two years for each charge and he has five charges, so the maximum he can get is ten years (the judge has discretion to order the sentences to be served concurrently or consecutively). If he gets probation, he can get up to five years for each charge, but the maximum amount of probation he can get is ten years, not 25 years. I'll post again after he's sentenced.

Thanks for bumping this one.

Did we ever hear anything about whether he used a state vehicle to ride share people around?
lethalninja

He wasn't charged with anything related to that.

Is that how that works? I was messing around with the website that showed sex offender map of my neighborhood and one guy was registered for exposing himself in public to adult women.

In Texas, a second conviction of indecent exposure to an adult is a sex offense, but his charges aren't sex offenses (his exact charges are invasive visual recording).

https://codes.findlaw.com/tx/code-of-criminal-procedure/crim-ptx-crim-pro-art-62-001/

That's the list of sex offenses in Texas

My assumption is the university would probably choose to keep something like that quiet rather than have him charged. On it's own, they might would have fired him but the videoing overshadowed it.

I can tell you that he had a long reputation for breaking university policy. I watched him follow me (a coworker), in his personal vehicle, while on the clock, while recording me with a video camera. He thought he was being sneaky and trying to catch me doing something wrong. All while breaking all kinds of rules. A true snake in the grass. I was fighting mad but didn't confront him and reported it to management. Never got any response.

5 years no probation.

Since the offenses are state jail felonies, he'll have to serve at least eighty percent of his sentence, and if he does this again after he gets out, he'll be facing up to ten years for each charge.

Was the prosecutor asking for the maximum ten years or is five years what they were asking for?

Edit: Never mind. I just saw the Eagle article and it says they asked for the maximum

Kbtx article with more info. Looks like they were asking for 10 years.

I'm curious about using the van as well. When he first got arrested I posted a story about my daughter having an experience with him posing as an Uber driver. It was very disturbing and I contacted CSPD who referred me to A&M police who referred me to transportation whom did not seem to be concerned.
After I posted that story a detective contacted me to get details. Over the years I've wondered what happened with him. Now I know.
The haunting story my daughter told me leads me to believe that his ubering in that van was his practice run to step up his perversion to next level. I hope they have dug deep on him with anyone else that has an experience with him being their driver.

CSPD punted you to UPD

UPD punted you to Transportation

Transportation did nothing to one of their own employees

This checks out.

What year was this? I worked closely with him from 2007-2018. He did a lot of creepy stuff but I don't really understand the mechanics of the uber thing. We knew a lot but I can only imagine what other things happened that will never be found out.

UPD dropped the ball on that. They should have followed up with TS and with the parent.

The fact that TS did nothing had everything to do with who he was rather than just an employee. He was a protected man.
