That was BRIGHT. I swear we saw two other satellites (and an airplane) during the same time frame.

If we saw the correct one, it went from NW to SE. But 2/3 of the way across the cloudless night sky, it disappeared. Maybe they turned out the lights inside.

It went into the Earth's shadow.

I don't know how many of you were able to be outside and looking skyward Saturday evening, but,, that was, by far, the best sighting I have ever witnessed. Perfectly clear skies, ISS was very bright, passing damn near straight overhead.. clearly visible from horizon to horizon..

Thx for the heads up BaitShack!

I always enjoy an ISS sighting opportunity, and I set a reminder on my phone for this one bc of this thread bump. Was at a St Pattys Day get together w/ friends last night, and most of them had never seen an ISS flyover... they were rightfully impressed, that one was ideal!

Not the ISS, but Starlink just deployed another 60 satellites today. If you are an early riser, Saturday morning you can see 43 Starlink satellites go over around 6:06am from a previous deployment, followed by the 60 from today's deployment around 6:24am.

Mimi - thanks for posting where the info came from!!!! We sit outside every night to watch satellites and our current app (Luminous - I may have spelled it wrong) is not working well anymore. We were just saying last night we needed to find a new one to identify what we see!

This site is a little clunky, but gives an indication of the brightness.

https://www.heavens-above.com/

I look at the magnitude (Lower numbers are brighter) and the Alt. (Degrees over the Horizon - Closest to 90 is best)

I found a site that shows predicted cloud cover and ISS passes. We'll see how accurate it is. 32% cloud cover tonight at 9 (Mostly medium clouds). ??

I received a text (below) about tonight's flyover, but the last one before that was on July 14. Sometimes, there will be several over a span of a few days, but then weeks can go by without one. Makes me wonder if NASA's ISS text alerts factor in the weather forecast at your location at the time of the flyover. The website only says:

Quote:

This service will only notify you of "good" sighting opportunities - that is, sightings that are high enough in the sky (40 degrees or more) and last long enough to give you the best view of the orbiting laboratory.

but nothing about weather or expected cloud cover. Here is the text about tonight:
Quote:

Time: Tue Aug 03 9:42 PM
Visible: 4 min
Max Height: 90 degrees
Appears: NW
Disappears: SE
