College Station is slow growth. Has been for years, even while everyone else struggles. It's a good thing compared to the crazy ups and downs seen elsewhere.
quote:I'm sorry, but of all the outlandish things you have posted, this takes the cake.
It's not a bias, it's a developers decision on what will make a store successful. Walgreens and CVS are great examples. They want out of Bryan so bad they can't see straight.
quote:Brazos Bingo didn't want to move is the word I have heard. It brings in a ton of money. CVS definitely wanted a location there.quote:I always thought that CVS going there was a joke because people always say where there is a Walgreens, CVS will build near by.quote:quote:What??? The Walgreens across from Bryan High is one of the most profitable and its the only 24 hour Walgreens out of all the location in Bryan and College Station.

CVS did have plans for a new store in Bryan at the corner of Villa Maria and 2818 (north east corner), I don't know if that is still happening.
If what some of you are saying is true (retailers don't look at Bryan's Population) then Bryan could support a lot more retail and needs to start recruiting businesses to the Bryan side of the border.
Where's the CVS that was supposedly going to replace the old Safeway at Briarcrest and 29th?
quote:Insulting me doesn't prove your prowess, sir/madame. You just admitted that you were spouting proprietary information. Wish I knew who you were so that I'd never employ your expertise in any business dealings of my own.
I don't feel like being sued by one of the largest developers in Houston. I was in the office today with a CVS Walgreens map and ALMOST took a picture to negate BS comments like these, until I realize if I took it to be an Internet tough guy, my employer would have me black balled.
PM if you want details. I've said enough proprietary info already. Those Walgreens rankings are no where near public info. I have a masters and Phd. I taught at A&M for multiple years. The attempt to correlate a user name to age eco it's the inability to think outside your obviously quite contracted paradigm.
God bless sir/Madame.

Eh. I should have done what I had done throughout the whole thread - Kept reading all the opinions and kept my fingers still.
But, I didn't and got called out for my tongue-in-cheek profile info. Live and learn....

Why not just wait 6 months to a year, see if any drug stores close (spoiler alert: they do) and then we can get to apologies?
Honestly, I think it can go either way at this point.
quote:Oh is this the shared account? That explains a lot.
I get confused on who is posting on this account. Can you confirm which one of the Nichols this is?
There are MS Finance, MBA, and PHd in the postings but not sure belongs to which person behind the keyboard. Would be less confusing for all of you just used different usernames - with all the claims of people not being able to even pay your taxes, surely you can afford different handles.
quote:shouldn't that read OverLord Mayor or perhaps Dark Lord? LOL
Our Lord Mayor is a real estate magnate. No way will he let our fair city die!

What an interesting thread so ruined.
quote:I agree with this statement, though I believe Bryan and College Station are different markets.
The story is not that BCS isn't booming, it's that its booming in a way you find disappointing. I have issues with the trajectory myself and what I'd like to see happen around here is even less likely than what you'd like to see. But it is what it is. People are moving here (second fastest growing metro area) for a reason. That doesn't happen with places in recession.

I live in south College Station and can tell there is growth. The economy is heavily reliant on the university, and I am not positive, but I assume as the university grows, so does the economy that is reliant on the revenues it generates. Every year there's a record breaking freshman class.
That said, I am highly disappointed in the way we are growing. Tower Point is probably my biggest disappointment. When HEB and Lowes came in, I thought we'd get a few more sit-down restaurants. Instead we got another few bank branches, another few fast food places, and a couple more urgent care clinics. All three of these are the last thing we needed in S CSTAT.
I'm not sure who the developers are, but it seems like it's very haphazard. There are many mid-sized markets (like New Braunfels, for example) that have done a better job developing retail and restaurants. I've heard the pricing at tower point is part of the issue. They are very proud of their price per sq ft, which kept a lot of folks away.
These, of course, are just my opinions based on observations and not supported by hard data.

quote:Agreed. As I said early in the thread, the short answer to the OP is "no."
