MEMORANDUM

TO: Texas A&M University System Office Employees

SUBJECT: CIO for The Texas A&M University System

I am pleased to announce that Mark Stone has accepted the position of Chief
Information Officer for The Texas A&M University System, effective April 24, 2013. He
will report directly to me and be a member of the Executive Committee.

Mark comes to us very highly recommended from his experience as CIO of two large
corporations: Zale Corporation, a $2.2 billion retailer, and most recently, Safety-Kleen
Systems, a leading international environmental services company. Mark has the experience
and expertise necessary to perform at a high level as our System CIO.

We look forward to his leadership and direction as we build an increasingly effective
and efficient IT operation for the Texas A&M System.

John Sharp
Chancellor

A lot of pro-outsourcing on this page...

Outstanding résumé. Looks like a good addition to the team.

Curious to hear more about your experiences, Slocum. Perhaps they can shed some light on what A&M is in store for.

Wow. This dovetails with stuff I've been hearing from IT people at TAMU. Thanks for your insight.

Techno seriously... What is your deal? It's almost comical.

It looks like he's buddies with the CAG/Technisource crowd that seems to have wormed their way into all things IT-related at TAMU. Cronyism at its finest.

And I think the experience listed on LinkedIn leaves a great deal for debate on the question of being qualified for the job. Having neither academic nor research experience, and having managed at most 5% of the staff and budget he's just received, doesn't inspire a great deal of gratuitous confidence.

I know Tradishun. I almost have to laugh now, just to keep my stress level down.

And another thing... Outstanding? Really??? The dude has never managed anything even half the size of CIS, much less a whole University System worth of IT professionals. And on top of that he has no higher-ed experience at all. Pete Marchbanks or Willis Marti are way more qualified than this guy.

The guy is exactly what Slocum said... a hatchet-man. Nothing more.

Wait ... are we talking about Mark Stone, the guy who has served as CIO for two large companies with thousands of employees? He's worked as a VP in Planning and Analysis and a senior director in Distribution and IT. He's also a CPA.

You guys can rag on TAMU leadership as always, but Stone's credentials are top notch. He is a Baylor grad, but I can forgive him for that.

CIO for two reasonably well-known but only moderately-sized companies, you mean.

Lacking any academic or research support experience, I should think at least a stint managing IT for something Fortune-500-ish would be appropriate to run IT for an entire university system, which includes the 4th largest university in the country. The budgets he managed are dwarfed by the budgets he'll be managing, by well over an order of magnitude.

But I do not think it was his experience running an IT organization that they were after.

I get bored on the weekends from time to time and need to exercise my Google-fu. Suffice it to say that when I finish typing up everything I've found on this (and related) matters, you'd probably find it VERY interesting. And by "you", I mean the AG ;-)

Not everybody just regurgitates whatever KBTX, The Eagle, and the Connally Building put out.

No, but it was a good start and their cache feature was handy several times. Plus, I don't have memorized the web addresses for the Texas Secretary of State's registry, for instance.

And no, I'm not going to dance this dance any further with you, techno-ag. There may be a lot of new names around here since I was most active, but I still know a troll when I see one.

I'm not exactly sure if I'm reading all the info from that graph correctly, but is that what you'd call an "outstanding resume"?

All things considered, this is not a good hire for the university. It cannot be spun nor can it be justified.

It would seem to me that whatever he helped put in place didn't work out too well. Company was doing OK when he got there, looks like they crashed hard about the time he left. I won't think it indicates a successful anything.

This is Pierce Cantrell's old system job. He has been moved back to only university VPIT.

So, let me get this straight. You have found incriminating evidence of malfeasance in the TAMU system through your "Google-fu." This malfeasance is SO BAD that the Attorney General would find it interesting enough to open an investigation of the TAMU system.

This awful stuff is out there via Google searches. Yet, no journalist in the state has dug it up and reported on it. Am I right? You have special knowledge of high crimes and misdemeanors that you personally have unearthed on Google? Perhaps you should share this knowledge with somebody, showing them your proof. You could single handedly upset the balance of power in Texas with your special knowledge.

I cannot believe techno-ag read all that into your post, marginal boy. Wow. Hang in there.
