In Praise of Local Burgers

I've had the opportunity to partake in the consumption of burgers from several fine establishments. I think we're really blessed to have restaurants committed to bringing us great burgers locally! Here are my favorites, in order of their awesomeness:

#1 - Stover Bros. burger @ Village Foods Deli. Good gosh, nothing comes close to matching the taste of this burger on the new buns. Last time I went my SO was seriously ticked I didn't bring any home. It is really that good, and nothing else matches it locally. Thank God for Jim & Charlie Mac!

#2 - Chef Tai's Kobe burger. Yes, it's worth eight bucks from his mobile kitchen. Yes, you'll pay extra for a drink, and chips or fries aren't included with the eight bucks. Yes, I repeat, it's worth every penny.

#3 - Harvey Washbangers burger. The bun is sweet, the meat is great. This is a good burger, and even though I hate trying to make my way through the middle of CS during lunch hour, HW's is worth the trip. Good stuff.

Now, while driving out of town I do have a couple nearby places that I like:

Huntsville - Bandera Grill. Good chicken fried steak, but their burgers are my favorite menu item. If you're ever out that way, stop off at the intersection of Hwy 30 with I-45. You won't regret it.

Bastrop - the Bastrop Roadhouse along Hwy 21 as you drive into town has a great burger. Sit out on the porch if the weather is nice and watch the world go by while you enjoy your food.

I really like Shipwreck's burgers. Their sweet bread is great.

Village Foods had a great burger - I have no idea what the Stover influence has done to it.

Have not tried Chef Tai's food. I would like to soon.

Harvey Washbanger has a good burger. As does Shipwreck. The Roadhouse (in Bastrop) also has a great burger.

The best burgers in the area are: Yankee's in Carlos, Margie's downtown and Joe's on Hwy. 21.

The burger thing has been done and re-done on this board. Some people also like Chicken Oil, Koppe Bridge, Longhorn Tavern and J. Cody's burgers. It's a matter of personal preference.

Have to admit, the burger Stovers has at Village Foods is pretty darn good.

I still like a Buffalo Burger from Fuddruckers, but that burger I had at Margies on Downtown Bryan was muy excelente!

Yankee's does have a pretty good burger. Should have put that as a third out of town choice.

Fuddruckers is pretty good, but I am lazy and prefer the cook to prep the burger with all the fixings instead of doing it myself. That's just me.

On a positive note, I am looking forward to the re-opening of Mr. Hamburger in Huntsville. It opened for business in 1959 and closed in 2005. It is coming back this year:

Don't want to distract from the main point of my post, which is to praise local burgers.

Well ... now that we've tried to edit out most of our snarky remarks, the above exchange looks pretty convoluted.

That's ok. Better us making the edits than staff, huh?

Love ya, NT! Have a great weekend.

Shipwreck does have a good burger! And so does magies if you like waiting. Where is Joes on 21 though? I probably drive past it a hundred times a day

Can you get Chef Tai's Kobe burger at Vertias? The mobile truck is never around when I'm hungry.

Love the fish tacos at SWG. Will have to try the burgers sometime.

Joe's is out east in Wixon Valley. Looks more like a bar than a burger joint. I've only driven by it.

I think the sleeping giant for burgers is Knockouts Grill House. They're awesome. Especially the Hangover Burger with the fried egg and the Macho burger with chorizo and ham!

Yankees patties are too rubbery and stiff for my taste. Stovers are great, as well as Chicken Oil, Dixie Chicken and Koppe.

Newbomb,

I know a lot of people like Yankees, which is cool. But, you can totally tell the patties are preformed by a machine, or at least I could the last time I ate there. Thing is, that's the last and only time I ate there because of that. It's gotta be done right to be worth the drive for me.

Other places that I mentioned may very well have preformed patties, but the thing is that I couldn't tell. Stover's definitely has hand formed, as well as Knockouts, because I've seen it at Stover's and Knockouts'taste hand formed, and the mgmt told me they were.

Maybe I'm just too anal about my burger...dunno

Not really local, but The Hill in Waller on FM362 is the best burgers I've had. Its just West of 290 a couple miles.

So, australopithecus, you made this judgment over one visit? When were you there? I have lost count of the number of times I've been to Yankee's and the number of their burgers I've eaten over the past 10 years or so. I still contend it's one of the best burgers around, especially in the past year or so (new cook). The patties are definitely not pre-formed.

Newbomb,

It was only one visit. It was a long drive for a mediocre product. However, based on your statements, I will take that drive again and re-assess with a very open mind. I will be very fair when I come back on here with my opinion. I would very much love to take that drive and love the burger. If it wasn't preformed before, then the cooks were packing the meat way too tight. It was very stiff and rubbery, not my imagination.

I hope you do make a return visit and I hope you enjoy it. I've had many items on Yankee's menu and never had a bad meal there. Such a blanket indictment (stiff, "rubbery" burger) based on one visit long ago does a disservice to those reading this thread who might otherwise miss out on a good burger experience.

Well then let's sincerely hope that it's better this time! I don't know if two mediocre visits would suggest a "blanket indictment", but maybe an indictment nonetheless lol!

Seriously, though. I really think that my expectations were set very high as well because all of the hoopla around Yankee's. It really made me believe that the Brazos Valley didn't have very high burger standards. I guess we shall see very soon, as I intend to go in the next few days. A decent burger is pretty easy to come by, a great one is an art.

I love the burgers at Ozona. I get it with the jalapeno cheese bread and absolutely love it.

I also feel that you cannot have a burger thread without singing the praises of Koppe Bridge. My cousin was in town this weekend and had never been before. When it came time to get him the best burger in town, we knew to take him to Koppe Bridge.
