I do remember this bit of information from camp... still his attitude is more in line with 1876 than current ideas regarding non-poisonous snakes or even snakes not within your back yard...

I took my motorcycle for a spin this weekend and killed several unidentified insects/bugs - whatever. It was an accident. They splattered onto my faceshield. I did wash them off with biodegradable detergent. I do not have an advanced degree, so I was unable to tell if they were good insects/bugs/whatever or not. The streaks were very colorful.

I accidentally stepped on 3 or 4 ants when taking the biodegradable paper towels to the trash. I did not really see them - they are way too small. I can see them when I sit on the front steps. I do not know if they are good ants or bad ants.

I just do not know what to do. I do not know whether to feel ashamed or not. I am truly grateful I have not been driven to drinking wine. Oh, had to clean insects from my car windshield also. I did not kill them on purpose. Maybe I should give up driving... I did swat a mosquito that was sucking blood from my forearm - that was on purpose.

I'm sure we shouldn't kill all snakes we come across because they are beneficial and most aren't venomous but here is how I think..I live in the country and my dog can't tell a good one from a bad one..I don't want her messing with the good ones and not getting poisoned and thinking all snakes are ok...She has been copperhead bit before by the way...I'm sure the bat's are beneficial too but I kill everone I come across because I ain't gonna sort out the rabid ones from the good ones...Same goes with rat's and democrat's...Sorry I couldn't resist....

Try cooking them twice -- first for ~ 4 minutes at 350, let them drain and cool down, then again for ~2-3 minutes at 375. Beer battered snake will work for those times, too.

Part of the reason I live in the city is because I hate snakes and I hate mice/rats. If I wanted to live around those creatures I would move to the country.

I conside all snakes deadly becaue I would have a heart attack if I saw a one up close and personal in my yard. In fact a couple of years ago there was a thread about a snake in my backyard. Needless to say - I didn't go into the backyard for most of the summer.

I hate snakes, all snakes and for all I care, they can all be dead. I feel the same way about mice. Call me evil, ignorant - don't care, as long as there are no snakes or mice around me, I will be evil, ignorant and happy.

3 weeks ago at lake granbury i saw a large fat duck that was crapping on my friends dock get hit so hard with a swiffer wet jet that it sounded like a football being kicked by a NFL punter. Don't know what happened next but I like to think that maybe a snake had an easy meal. I think that this makes up for the snake that was runned over earlier in the thread.

"I hate mice/rats. If I wanted to live around those creatures I would move to the country."--There are more mice and rats in the city. Most of the species people see, like being around people. Most of the species found "in the country", don't associate with people much, and aren't the ones typically trapped around houses. My living in the city you are choosing to live near mice/rats.

Here's a fun story. Came home late one night, shut the garage door. Next morning, I found a snake that tried to eat a frog. The frog had jumped into the garage, the snake had tried to swallow the frog, the garage door landed on the snake.

Alas, both were dead when I left for work in the morning. The horror!

I have a question for all of you 'the only good snake is a dead snake' crowd. What on god's green earth happened to you in the past to give you such an overwhelming and irrational fear of all snakes?

I just don't get it. When I was a kid, my parents told me snakes were dangerous. That was probably partly from their ignorance and partly to try to keep me safe. Once I researched it a little bit on my own, I came to really appreciate and even own a couple of snakes.

Seriously, something had to happen to you people .

Well said. Just because snakes are not the "cute, fuzzy" animals people seem to gravitate towards, doesn't mean they don't play an important role in the ecosystem.

Actually, if snakes aren't bothering me, I do not bother them. I have never had a snake try to run me over or bite me. But, I would not swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid crushing one with my car.

Nor would I try to hit one. It's just a snake! This has turned out to be an interesting topic! Have mercy...

5 yrs old, running barefoot in the yard of my grandparents house out in the country. Accidently stepped on a bullsnake whiich then wrapped itself around my ankle. It's been 44 yrs since that happened and just typing this makes me still feel the sensation of that thing on my foot and ankle! Add to that the very venomous cottonmouth that ended up in my garden a few years ago, and I am firmly with the good snake/dead snake crowd.

What is the difference between a dead snake in the road and Obama? The snake has skid marks in front of it.

I'm pretty sure that was a rat snake you ran over, I slowed down when I hit it later in the day, to see what it was, but it had become mostly road pizza. It was probably on the road trying to warm up, stretched out across the road to get as much surface area on the warm pavement. No great loss to the ecosystem, they are very numerous around here and do well in both rural and urban environments.

We handled snakes in our church, so they don't bother me, but it's the ******************, **************** and *** that get me around here!

A old snake goes to see his Doctor. "Doc, I need something for my eyes...can't see well these days". The Doc fixes him up with a pair of glasses and tells him to return in 2 weeks. The snake comes back in 2 weeks and tells the doctor he's very depressed. Doc says, "What's the problem...didn't the glasses help you?" "The glasses are fine doc, I just discovered I've been living with a water hose the past 2 years!"

Wow...I don't check in for a couple of days, and this is what you people do with yourselves? I almost forgot that the internet was such serious business.

I'm pretty sure some people are just always going to hate snakes, me being one of them. Call me ignorant, or whatever else makes you feel better about yourself; i'm not going to lose any sleep over it either way.

I'm glad at least some people around here aren't so full of themselves that they realize it was just a snake, & that the world has kept turning.

And regarding cats...don't loathe them as much as snakes, but not a big fan of them either.
