You are absolutely right, running over a 2' chicken snake in your wife's car is VERY manly.

So is drinking wine.

This was no 2' snake. It was hard to tell since it was coiled up when we went back, but I would estimate about 5 feet. Couldn't tell in the dark what kind it was.

Then it definitely was not a venomous snake. Check out the Texas Junior Naturalist website and learn a little:

Rum, why would you say it's definitely not a venemous snake? Your link said two of them averaged at 4-1/2' and can even reach 7'

______________________

Western diamondback (Crotalus atrox), Brown, diamond-shaped markings along the middle of the back and alternating black and white rings on the tail. Averages 3 1/2 to 4-1/2 feet in length, and can reach seven feet. This is the most common and widespread venomous snake in Texas, found in all but the easternmost part of the state.
Timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) also known as Canebreak rattlesnake is a large, heavy-bodied snake averaging 4-1/2 feet. Brown or tan with wide, dark crossbands. Tail is entirely black. Found in the eastern third of the state in wooded areas in wet bottomlands.

I guess next time you see the old yellow lab walking down the street, save us of all from the danger and line-up Ranger with the hood ornament. Can't be too careful, right?

I'm all for nature, as long as the nature leaves me alone. When it threatens people, I always choose people over nature. I'll gladly kill any venomous snakes that get near kids or pets. I also poison fire ants and spray for mosquitoes and wasps.

I think it may have been a much larger version of one of these:

quote:
The chicken snake is found in various locations around North America. Some species of the chicken snake are relatively small in length and diameter, although it is possible for a chicken snake to grow to over seven feet long. Some types of the chicken snake will constrict their prey before consumption. Most will coil and attack when they feel cornered or threatened in any way. While their bite is not poisonous in most cases, it is usually extremely painful.

quote:
All of them will bite when threatened, and are capable of leaving behind an open wound that is extremely painful. Several of these snakes will enjoy small animals such as rats or other prey with as much relish as bird and chicken eggs. Some of the snakes are excellent climbers, allowing them to navigate with ease through trees and swallow bird eggs from the nest.

While it may not have been venomous (I never said it was), I prefer to err on the side of caution, and seeing as how it was right by a large family oriented neighborhood (not to mention that I see people going for walks along those sidewalks with their kids daily), I think most of the parents with small children would probably feel the same way. If you don't agree with me, that's ok; you can keep them around as much as you want.

Btw, the picture above was taken this last fall of a 24" version that decided to come out of the hose reel in our backyard and coiled next to my foot preparing to strike. Luckily I happened to look down before it was ready and I was able to jump back. Very luckily my 3 year old son was not out there with me at the time trying to "help" me as he likes to do. Venomous or not, good for the environment or not, to pull a very important quote from the information above, "All of them will bite when threatened, and are capable of leaving behind an open wound that is extremely painful."

What if the five foot version from last night had decided to make it's way into the backyard of one of the houses next door? What if it decided to take up residence on a swing set or play area of one of the families with small children? Are you going to tell them, "Oh...it's too bad your two year old daughter got bitten by the snake, but it was a poor defensless creature that is an important part of the ecosystem."???

Due to the HEB development on one side, and the new High School development on the other, unfortunately more of these creatures are likely to be displaced from their homes and make their way into our neighborhood. I'm not trying to start a debate on man encroaching on the natural habitats of animals, and i'm sorry if you don't agree, but I will continue to kill any snake that I see. You can feel free to round up any that you see and save them, just don't come crying on here when they bite you or someone you love.

I also stomp on scorpians, spray wasp nests, bait ant mounds and set mouse traps. I guess that just makes me an all around pure evil person.

I remember a few years back I helped (screwed around with) a rattler crossing the road in the CS business park. Snakes don't lay in wait hoping for someone with boots on to walk by. They are off doing what snakes do.
Here's hoping that the Rat snake had a bunch of babies last week!!!!

Killing a snake because it is a snake and you don't like snakes is ignorant. Bragging about it lets us all know just how ignorant you are.

Do you enjoy kicking cats also. Why don't you tell us some cat stories?

So you don't kill spiders, wasps or ants or anything? Or is that ok because they are just bugs? I mean, "don't f with them and they don't f with you," right? They have their place in the ecosystem too. If you are going to whine about people killing animals, just make sure you are consistent.

Wanna bet?

Killing any animal without good reason is ignorant. If you have a wasp nest in your attic, that is good reason. A spider in your house, that is good reason too. A spider in its web in a tree-not good reason, they eat mosquitoes. Snakes eat mice which are not a good thing to have too many of, neither are mosquitoes.

Sad…It appears TxAg1876 received an education in 1876.

Here we are lucky enough to live in an area with a higher percentage of individuals with advanced education, yet these same individuals maintain a perverse pride in their unyielding grip on irrational ignorant beliefs closely followed with actions stemming from this purposeful ignorance.

- How was that snake a ‘danger’ to you or your wife, riding safely inside your car?

- The actions are even more nauseating after the statement saying you didn’t even confirm if animal was poisonous or not yet you brag of killing it anyway, sounding like a little boy satisfied after he has pulled the legs off a beetle.

Do you enjoy dealing with an overabundance of rodents? Rodents which may carry diseases that may more readily affect humans even thru indirect contact.
“Worldwide, rats and mice spread over 35 diseases. These diseases can be spread to humans directly, through handling of rodents, through contact with rodent feces, urine, or saliva, or through rodent bites. Diseases carried by rodents can also be spread to humans indirectly, through ticks, mites or fleas that have fed on an infected rodent.”
