seriously..can I go anywhere in this town and not get bombarded and harrassed about giving them a donation.
First off I dont mind giving donations to people or orginizations that need them...but when the kids out there have on $100 pullover jackets with a 12 embroided on them...something tells me they dont need my donation.
and the several times I have been asked about giving a donation to the 12...and I have said no thank you..the parents have responded in a rude manner.
a few weeks ago in front of Academy I said no and this mom then told me "but its for kids"..I replied "sorry but no"..and she then told me to have agood day but in a very sarcastic tone
today a dad actually told me.."well..I hope other people are willing to donate for kids"
Seriously...where do these people get off

I do not have young kids..but I have heard alot about the 12 baseball and from what I can tell it is strictly a "moneyball" program
and from the attire the kids are wearing and the attitude from some of the parents I have encountered...I dont disagree

I'm against asking for donations in front of stores for anything. I don't carry cash and right now, I can't afford to give $$ to anyone else. If organization gets really pissy about no donations, then I normally inform the store manager of the business they setup camp outside of. No one likes to be badgered as they walk out of the store.

The Girl Scouts had setup a table outside of Chilis on a saturday night. I'm sure they saw it as an opportunity to expand the market, but to be asked while waiting and on the way out was annoying. Maybe I'm just getting old and bitter.

You're not old and bitter. As a college student, I grow tired of being asked to donate or to buy cookies..I don't have money!!

It's one thing to ask for donations when you are in a situation where the kids need equipment and otherwise wouldn't get to play. But I've seen these kids walking around town, at games at Olsen, etc. They are wearing nice, fancy, personalized, embroidered team gear, like they play for the Yankees or something. It's ridiculous.

I heard that the Twelve will receive federal "stimulus" money.

exactly my point...kids that young do not need the same gear that college and MLB teams wear..they dont need all the fancy, pullovers, personalized equipment ect ect
if they can afford all that then they dont need to set up camp in front of every store in BCS asking for donations...or they can spend their money more wisely
that is why I say it is a "moneyball" orginization

Unfortunately, that sense of entitlement is present in many College Station children these days. I see it daily. This place is beginning to think it's Highland Park.

I bought one of their coupon card and have used it more than enough to cover the cost of the card. It has quite a few good deals on it. I wouldn't just hand them money, though. Cookie sales should be done unless you're in another area. I'm not sure where you were that you were still getting asked about GS cookies.

I agree to everything on here!!!

Probably the only way I would not mind it, is if they set up shop outside an establishment and did not say a damn word to you as you go in or come out. Then, if you choose to go and give something on your own, then so be it. But then they would probably not receive anything and get all pissed off or something!

The answer if you are not donating is: "You already got me."

I bought the Twelve card and it has more than paid for itself. I'm not sure why people are complaining so much...just don't buy if you don't want it. Now the parents being rude is a reason to complain. And before someone asks, no my kids are not Girl Scouts or players for Twelve.

MickeyT, it seems we can't leave any store without being badgered by someone asking for money. We get flyers at least a dozen flyers from school each week asking to support the new way to get $$ from the parents. Its quite overwhelming and after awhile, I just don't want to give $$ to anyone.

I purchased one of the 2 for 1 cards last year, and it paid for itself rather quickly. I really enjoyed the Shipley's and Chicken Express discounts.

The boy that we bought ours from is a friend, and all of his sales directly benefited him so that was nice.

I like to use the phrase:
"No, I don't give to charities anymore"

It's worth it just for the dirty looks I get when I say it.

Though not entirely true, I don't foot cash on the street for anyone. I research a charity before giving and sadly most are not up to par. The majority of the money you give goes to admin fees and padding someone's pocket, with a small percentage going to people that actually need it.

I think this is what the OP thread is about.

These kids are spending money on expensive uniforms, expensive baseball equipment, hotels, gas, monthly 12 fees, etc.

I would much rather give money to a child who cannot even afford the $95.00 dues for Little League.

If you are going to sign your son up to play an elite sport, then you need to foot the bill for them. Don't ask the community for donations. It's a choice to play or not.

The 12 kids really have elite attitudes when talking to other children about their club. My son will come home saying that kids from the 12 will say things like "well I play for the 12 so I play baseball better than you". Or my favorite line, which was told to my 8 year old son from a 12 player that was also 8. His quote "You must really suck at playing baseball since you only play little league and not for the 12 like I do".

I refuse to support elite organizations.

At least the Little League kids are using their time and energy to play baseball. They aren't wasting it sitting outside a store learning to beg. That's not the message I want my kids to get.

You must have a child or be a friend of a 12er. All everyone is doing here is voicing the inherent hypocrisy behind trying to shill gift cards off to pay for customized bat bags and weekend getaways to play tournaments.

wow...you have got to be kidding me
does the 12 really give their players customized individual batting bags
if so that is ridiculous
WTF do 8,9,10 year old kids need with that..is a customized batting bag and expensive pullover jacket gonna help them in any way in baseball
I see the expensive gear the kids wear around town and out at Olsen..have no idea what else they get
so is the 12's goal to turn all these kids into primadonna's before they get to high school

What is a "batting bag?"

Is it anything like a bat bag?

No, it's completely different. But for your comedic efforts.

I don't mind buying a 2 for 1 card once a year. For me it is the same as my supporting a school drill team ( chicken dinner tickets), athletic dept ( discount card), or helping local cheerleaders with the good old Double Daves card. I am getting something in return for helping out a kid that wants to play sports or be involved in extra curricular activities. Granted, I can't do it all the time, or for every organization, but I try.

What is the financial commitment required to play for the Twelve?

Twelve Baseball Academy members agree to pay monthly dues beginning in August and continuing through July. Membership dues are dependant upon the experience level of a team’s head coach, and range from $25 to $100 per month. As with most travel team opportunities, there are other costs associated with playing for the Twelve, including uniform costs and tournament entry fees.

From the pic on their website it looks like they have about 90 kids involved in the program. At a cost of $25-100 a month, the parents are already putting in $2250 to $9000 a month, making it a yearly cost of $27000 a year to a maximum of 108000 a year.

That seems like a lotta cash.

Why are folks so upset with the 12? What about the Stealth, the Dragons, the Stallions, the Huricanes, the Knights, and the Owlz?

Heck we have kids traveling to Houston to play for the Miracles and the 12 is just filling that nitch so kids don't have to travel to Houston for practice. Is it just the gear?

Or is it because the 12 has paid managers?

Girls volleyball and softball have been doing this for years around here. What about the traveling soccer clubs?
