Most dog owners have the same attitude "leash laws are for all the OTHER dog owners who aren't as good as me as controlling my dog".

They have no respect for other people.

Painting a pretty broad stroke there aren't you? I agree with the original poster, but could you post a link to back up your claim?

I am a dog owner, and my dog is always on a leash when out of the yard. It too pisses me off when I am walking my dog and some dick head walking a dog without a leash comes by and their damn dog has to run up to mine. Doesn't matter if it's aggresive or not, it still pisses me off.

I think the whole general point is that under normal circumstances, a voice command is probably fine, but the problem is that in a city you can't always count on normal circumstances.

For one, your dog might act differently that normal if the animal is suprised or frightened. There is always a chance that a kid on a bike, skateboard, skates, etc might come up behind while your dog is focused on something else. You also don't know what your dog might suddenly perceive as a threat to you and when they might kick in that instinct to protect you.

I know I was taking pictures out at a park one time of an owner playing with two dogs, the owner was fine with me taking pictures and the dogs knew I was there, but when the camera shutter sounded off, the dogs freaked out. Luckily the owner was able to get them and calm them down and nothing bad happened, but it just shows you that perfectly well mannered animals might react differently if they are frightened or perceive some type of threat to their master. In this case, they thought the camera pointed at them and their master was something dangerous.

I live in a townhouse complex. We have very small backyards, and most of us have to walk our dogs around the property in grassy areas. I have two little dogs. They are always on a leash. Every year there are students that move in here that let their dogs outside off leash and I hate it. For one thing, there are parking lots everywhere and people speed through them. Their dog could easily get ran over. Second, many of these dogs run up to my little dogs that are on a leash. I don't know how that person's dog is going to react, especially when one of mine starts barking and growling at the one that ran up to us. Why is it so hard for people to just put a leash on their dog??

There is a guy in our neighborhood(Edelweiss Gartens) who runs early in the morning with his Sheltie off a leash. She never fails to jump/bark/snap at me with him uselessly yelling at her to stop and come to him. I actually called CSPD non-emergency and reported him once. They said they talked to him. He was running with the dog off the leash the next day.

At least once a week, while walking our dogs(on leashes) a dog(loose in it's own front yard) comes running after us raising cane. One week it was a huge pit bull. The guy was yelling and yelling, but the dog kept coming. I actually thought, "We are all going to die." Our dogs, who will usually bark at the dog coming after us, just sat there and I think they were thinking the same thing. It was scary.

I'll throw my cat in the ring also as one that strictly obeys the leash laws. She's always inside or inside the fenced in backyard and probably too fat and definitely too lazy to go out.

To the horseback riders... get a squirt bottle and put some watered down ammonia in it. When a dog rushes your horse, squirt at their face. I guarantee they wont do it twice. I learned this after being thrown by my horse who was spooked by dogs actually nipping at his feet. I complained to the dogs owners and they laughed and said their dog was "just playing." They weren't really concerned when I said that I could have been badly hurt when thrown. One good squirt and the dog left us alone.

ryn...get over yourself...take you dog to steeplechase park and stop making a big fuss.

but to recap everything I have learned about my neighborhood.......
- there is a leash law in CS that everybody should abide by. (no matter how good you think your dog is)
- ryn is going to be ticketed soon by the CSPD - animal control
- there is some guy killing cats around Edel. Gartens (just put your car in the garage)
- and if there are any random coyotes running around killing dogs...i'm screwed.

i'm proud to live in this neighborhood!!!

Two words: LEASH LAW
Using an electronic collar on a pet should be considered a CRIME!

I have learned one thing from this thread. Stay out of Edelweiss Gartens. There seem to be a lot of dog problems there.

Electronic collars a crime hmm? Man there are a lot of retarded people on here. It is always amuzing to see how much people complain on this site. We have gone from a complaint about a leash to somebody threatening to kill dogs and people with a 45 colt. Yall are definitely amusing.

It is called not rereading what you type. I am glad you people pay attention to the important stuff. I guess that is the joys of dealing with people on here.

You used it twice.... I thought you were trying to convey a specific point with it.

I just have to say, as a veterinarian, that the leash laws have a purpose. I see so many dogs that have been either hit by a car or attacked by another dog that could have been prevented if the owners had control of their pets. Use common sense and don't think that your dog is such a good citizen that it would never chase after another dog or a jogger or that it is always under your command. There's always a possiblity that they could be seriously injured or injure another dog or a person. Use a leash, please.

No TxElsie it is called lack of rereading what I typed. Didn't realize I did it twice.

I can respect that opinion MiMi more than people threatening with a colt 45. They better hope I am not carrying also. I never had a issue with my dog ever trying to run off. I know that is what everybody says, but I had her for 10 years and after I trained her, she never jetted on me. As far as attaches, those people need to be floged for lack of training with their dogs.

I think some of you people need leash laws to keep you from your computer.

I am even more proud of the wonderful pet owners who allow their animal to leave a large deposit in my front yard that I can enjoy when mowing..... I have started watching for them and when they allow their dog to do this, I follow them home and return the favor on their front door step.

ditto. our across the street neighbor does this for their dog.
