How long do you want to ignore this user?
why do some people insist on walking their dogs without a leash...most have their dogs on a leash..but some dont

I hate this...if I am out jogging I dont mind it....but I dont like having to worry about my wife and month old son getting attacked by a dog while out for a walk because some moron didnt have their dog on a leash

there is this one retard that walks in the eldeweiss gartens subdivision..usually walking around the park under construction and most of the side streets of Eagle..she walks and talks on her cell phone the entire time and her dog(dont know what kind..looks like a black lab)..is running around everywhere and she is paying no attention whatsoever to it...she just keeps blabbing on here cell phone

I know too many people who have had young ones attacked by dogs....and every idiot owner said the same thing..."well that is the first time anything like that has ever happened"
It only takes one time...if you are gonna walk your dog..put the damn thing on a leash

no thanks. my dog is under voice control. if nobody is around, i tell her to run ahead. if we are going to pass someone, she heels.

i always keep an electronic collar on her though, mostly for her safety, in case she ever tried to run into traffic.

Way to be considerate of those around you, Ryn. Good for you that you have good voice control over your pet, but that isn't the point. Have you ever heard of a leash law? We have one and your pet should be on a leash for not ONLY its safety, but for the safety of others.

I don't know why I am always shocked by the amount of selfishness and inconsiderate behavior of others. I guess in a way we're all guilty of that to some degree, but when it puts lives in danger, there is no excuse for it.

Just a note. College Station has a leash law that requires every dog, not in an enclosed yard to be on a leash. The only exceptions to this are Lick Creek Park (voice command), Steeplechase Park dog park (enclosed) and, once completed, the University Park dog park (enclosed.

Please be considerate of those around you.

if my dog walking next to my side offends you, so be it. come arrest me.

edit: actually katt, that IS the point, to have control over your pet. some people cant even accomplish that WITH a leash.

Most dog owners have the same attitude "leash laws are for all the OTHER dog owners who aren't as good as me as controlling my dog".

They have no respect for other people.

it's just plain not safe and I would hate for something to happen to the dog

Yes the leash law is in fact there to protect all, and I will obey it at all times. I own a 4 pound poodle that is no threat to anyone and is an outdoor loving dog. So, unless we stay in our small yard to throw the ball and have this tiny dog get very little play exercise, we are breaking the law.

I have had those damned little dogs run out in front of me while running... while they won't hurt me by biting me, they will hurt me if I step on it and fall down.

who would you rather pass on the street?

a) joe schmo's dog on its hind legs, lunging at the end of his leash while pulling joe down the street

b) my dog walking calmly next to me, not paying you any attention unless you greet her.

my dog is under voice control most of the time too. he actually runs better and walks better for that matter without a leash. ( I do carry one with me) if i see anyone coming I move to the other side of the street. I would never let my dog off his leash if I thought we was a hazard to anyone but mostly he ignores everything including passing dogs.

I do agree that people need to be aware and pay attention to their animals, letting them run lose with no control in a public park is not safe and rude to other visitors. but if someone has voice control over their dog then its probably better behaved than most dogs on a leash.

Ryn, if you're not walking your dog on a leash, can you guarantee that he's not going to react to my very poorly trained rescue dogs, who I guarantee will be barking and flinging doggy insults at your dog? We're working on self-confidence and reactivity and being able to ignore other dogs, but it's only going so well for a variety of reasons -- and I walk in some of the same areas you do.

There is a leash law.

You will get ticked for it if an officer sees you.

Follow. The. Leash. Law. Even if it's just a retractable that still lets your dog roam and sniff, follow the freakin' law.

It's for everyone's benefit. And YOU are not above the law.

It's really sad that, Ryn, that you just don't get it. Just hope you never run into me without your dog on a leash. I'll make it a point moving forward, to make sure I call animal control when I see an unleashed pet, whether its yours or anyone elses.

Use the leash where you are required to.

Follow.The.Speed.Limit

When we all do that 100% of the time, then we can complain about a well trained dog not being on a leash.

Aggie 91....Really? You don't pay attention to where you are running? Small dogs that run out in front of you are still visible...unless YOU are not watching your own feet! Bottom line LEASH LAW is there to protect ALL! Even my little dog form runners like you!

I live in an apartment, I have no "yard" and now I am on crutches.

One of the only ways for me to exercise my dog is to play ball with him in the common area out front. I'm sorry but the health and well-being of my dog comes before a no-leash citation. I physically cannot walk him as I had prior to being injured, so I don't know what other options I have.

And since we are on the leash-law rant, it applies to cats as well. That means your cat must either be confined to your yard or on a leash at all times. How many cat owners actually abide by this?

I hate people that don't use leashes as well. I have a lady in my neighborhood who walks her dog without a leash and lets it walk up into people's yard to take a crap. I am about to go take one of my leashes out to her and hopefully not strangle her.

There are also the people who let their dog run up to any and every dog walking on the road. Then it never fails, they always say "Oh he is so friendly." And they have no idea how the other dog will react, much like superspeck said.

Yeah, I can. If it looks like you or your dogs are going to be a problem, I'll move off the sidewalk, or to the other side of the street.

A well trained dog and an electronic collar backup are 100x better than a wild dog on a leash.

Me, my cats are indoor and if they are allowed outdoors, they are only in the backyard with me.

The little dog's cause just as much of a problem as a large dog that is loose. I have had many small dogs run up to me and whatever dog I am walking. Many who will bite or snarl at a larger dog. And guess what, if my large dog on a leash, shakes and injures your small dog, you are at fault, not me.

I ride my bike there sometimes. Half the dogs that are not on leashes chase me.

Once at dusk some people on a walk with a leashless dog were nearing the RP exit. Dog starts chasing me, just to teach the people a lesson I slowed down so he could keep up, took him all the way to Pebble Creek. Hope those people enjoyed looking for their dog in snake infested Lick Creek park in the dark.

Yes, I ride my horse in Lick Creek frequently. Sometimes dogs run up underneath my horse, while most people see us approaching and restrain their dog, some have no regard for my safety or their dogs, obviously. If my horse happens to kick their dog while it is running underneath his legs, I will not apologize when his foot connects with the dog.

While this is a rare occurance, it does happen. Most people have been very nice and respective of having their dog under voice command if not leashing it until we pass. I have 4 dogs myself and wouldn't want them to get kicked - a 1000# horse can do some damage with a well placed kick.

But, I don't ride in town where there is a leash law...

lol thats awesome...

The leash law is a "fall back" law. Its there to nail people whose pets are a nusience or dangerous. For responsible pet owners who know what they are doing and have a well trained pet it shouldn't be forced down their throat. For problem dogs all measures should be taken to remove them from the equation.

One of the few times I lost control over my emotions where with an unleashed dog. Granted it was a dog that followed no commands what so ever and was threating my wife and I's dog and my parents dog.

RYN....my dog is trained also, however when I take them to public parks or am jogging in my neighborhood (by Edelweiss Gartens park on Eagle Rd.)...I keep them on a leash. As several people stated....there is a leash law in CS. If you are interested, there is a dog park called Steeplechase Park where you can let your dog run around.

I have two labs and they enjoy running around this park...and it's not that far away. In the end, people don't know if you dog is trained or wears an electronic collar....not everybody is a dog lover. I don't really care that much about this issue, but you may be respectful of others that live in our neighborhood by Edelweiss Gartens Park that don't want dogs coming up to them while they are enjoying a public park.

Here is the info on Steeplechase Park:

I do not have any pets, but I think its funny that many people that complain about dogs not being on leashes let their cats roam around the neighborhood.

Neighborhood cats repeatedly damaged my vehicle costing me nearly $1000 in damage. The vehicle is always parked in my driveway and animal control would not do anything about it.

After months of trying different methods of deterring their presence in my yard/vehicle and trying to determine the actual owners, unfortunatly there was only one final solution.

I hope you didn't kill the animal. If so, please hold, I'll have the police at your door momentarily.

There are all sorts of ways to catch a cat ... then you take it to the shelter.

so, you imply that you killed an animal....

all because you were too lazy to go and buy a cover for your car, or park it in the garage? It would of only cost you $40.00 bucks for a cover, and your garage is FREE!!

My neighbors cat leaves me dead things at my door. My dogs think the kitty is a squirrel, but I think the kitty lubs me.

It does like to walk on my beheamoth truck though and sleep on the warm hood - under the carport...

To take a slightly different angle---I work a lot with urban coyote issues. If I am working on an incident and the dog/cat was on a leash, this is an incident that is taken very seriously. If the same dog/cat is free to roam (even within voice command) out of immediate close proximity of the owner, the incident is viewed with much less severity.

If a city is having a "coyote issue", one of the first things they are told is to start strictly enforcing leash ordinances.

Just another angle to look at it from.
