We are going to the Frio River Thursday. Because of all the rain, have they been allowing people to float? It will be my first time down in this area of Texas. Any good bars or places I need to go. We are staying around Concan.

Don't know about the Frio but stay away from the Colorado!

I have some friends who make an yearly trip to the Frio this time of year. They're going this weekend as well. They haven't said anything about not going.

I think most of the big weather has been east of there.

Frio is running 5 feet at concan...it is usually about 1.5 feet. You may be able to float it if you sneak in, but the highest I ever floated it was when it was about 3 feet at Concan.

You will be fine. I've been floating the frio for 20+ years. Five feet is perfect for floating, it will be a little fast, but still safe.

Beats bumping your ass on rocks the whole way.

I've been flaoting the Frio since I could get in the water without drowning...my family has camped on the river at least anually since the 1930's.

If the river is way up, as long as it is running clear, it will be floatable, but some of the bigger rapids could be a little more intimidating than usual, to the point of being dangerous for weak swimmers in a few places. One thing is for sure, the trip will be a LOT faster than usual. It is best to float the river after a rain and rise in the river, as soon as it runs really clear, as it will be up a foot or so still.

At concan, it usually runs 1-2 feet, with 1 foot more typical. If it is running 5 feet at that gauge, like it shows on the river gauges on the web, it is probably a brown torrent full of debris still...but if the rain lets up, maybe Saturday afternoon would be a great day to tube it once the water goes back down some.

Floating it while it is running high and brown is plain stupid....

Right now, it is running 5.5ft, and 969 cubic feet per second flow. The average flow is 57 cubit feet....so it is WAY up.

Mouth,

Can you tell me where to find those flow rates so I can send the link to my friends?

Thanks.

The TPWD website has a lakes and rivers section with lots of good info. Two of the best are the float guide (has EXTENSIVE information on all the publicly accessible put-in and take-out places on many of the rivers, and they add new ones now and then...they even have pictures!)

Then there is the flow gauges:

You'll have to drill down in the nueces basin, but one of the stations is on the Frio at concan...
