my lab eats tomato hornworms, what strange appetite does yours have?

It started when I found a large tomato hornworm in the garden and tossed it to my yellow lab. She played with it a while like a cat with a mouse and eventually killed it. This has gotten to be a routine until today. My wife headed for the garden and the dog runs ahead, finds a hornworm on a plant, picks it off and eats it!

What strange eating habits does your dog have?

My lab (Coal) likes everything except strawberries and pretzels. He got into our pantry once and I had packaged up some zip lock bags of cheddar and pretzel goldfish for lunch. He tore open each bag, ate every one of the cheddar gold fish and left every single one of the pretzel gold fish.

His favorite food is oranges and carrots.

He’ll drink bourbon if offered but he really likes the bubbles in champagne.

He likes to eat corn on the cob (provided you hold it for him).

He got on the counter once and ate a whole chocolate cake and (we thought) an entire loaf of French bread. Well about a month later my wife was hosting the lady’s Bible study and she happened to reach into the coach cushions after something and voila, half a French bread loaf as hard as a baseball bat. Coal started wagging his tail and had a look of, “Oh, that’s where I left that” on his face.

awesome Wildcat. Did you notice a lack of energy or anything after the dog ate the chocolate cake?

I had a Brittany once that ate some chocolate and hung her head like she was snakebit. I found out later that chocolate is toxic to dogs.

I used to take target practice as a kid with my air rifle on the cicadas in trees. My Boston Terrier would wait for them to drop and chow down.

Ice and tomatoes that don't quite make the cut. Also had to build a temporary fence around the peach trees or I would get no peaches!

The lab I had as a boy "Doc" would pull the individual grapes off of our grape vine in the backyard. My current lab "Sheila" loves banannas and will eat certain types of ice I think she likes the ice Sonic makes the best but she wont go anywhere near what comes out of my freezer honestly I dont blame her.

.

Yes, but it had more to do with his full stomach then chocolate toxicity. He had trouble getting up he was so full.

He has had to have his stomach pumped because he got into several bags of chocolate chips one day. I didn't want to take any chances.

I have a Beagle. It does not discriminate.

Celery, asparagus ends, carrots, frozen green beans. These are all snack foods she gets instead of doggie treats. She only gets the baby carrots when we are on a hunting trip because the sugar in them gives her too much energy to let her have them around the house.

Gun safety is no accident.

Grapes, orange slices, cherries, and just about anything else that my wife gives them.

I swear they'd eat asparagus if she ate one first.

Before she passed on, my cow dog ate almost all of the above and then:
wadded up wax paper w/ bbq sauce in 3 seconds,
whole squirrels starting w/ the tail=hemp rope poop
She would get loose on Christmas evening when the trash sacks were out on the curb. She would eat her way through the sack and trash to the food, swallowing everything as she went as evidenced by her vomit the next two days.
She would eat left over rotten bits of meat at the taxidermy shop where I worked, some of which had been boiled w/ chemicals to remove it from skulls. The bosses dog died in surgery from a twisted gut trying to hang w/ her.
I think she'd have killed and eaten me if she was bigger. I know she'd have lived for a week on me if I'd have died.
Her breath was eternally rotten, when she wasn't farting, she was "emanating" gas. It was a sort of spirit like presence around her. Sometimes it was bad enough she had to get up and leave the room. That's all I got for now. Maybe I'll add others later.

Marcel and Wildcat, your dogs sound hilarious.

Mine will hunt out cat turds like they are chocolate truffles hidden in a field.

She also likes to eat small rocks.

Mine loves Cinnamon Altoids, if she smells them in my pocket she attacks me the minute I open the gate until I give her about 10. Who knows how that one got started. She also gets after our chickens quite a bit, but will only rip out their tailfeathers.

Joe- I had a beagle for 15 years. Their nose, leads to their mouth and then the stomach. Amazing what and how much they can eat.

FYI folks: grapes and raisins can cause renal failure on dogs.

my lab/aussie will eat just about anything but dry lettuce...she also ate an very large bar of dark chocolate last Christmas...i left it on an end table in the living room one night and there was nothing but a few shards of wrapper left in the AM...i was worried about the toxicity, but she showed zero ill effects

My dachshund will eat peppers off the plant, and two years ago the beagle ate all our strawberries.

My rat terrier eats fresh figs. Given his height, we are perfectly content to allow this, because his presence prevents the squirrels from attacking the upper sections of the tree.

A few months ago, I heard a noise coming from the pantry. I walked around the corner to find my 12 year old lab had managed to get the lid off the peanut butter jar. He ate as far as he could get his nose in the jar, but was like a bull in a china cabinet because he couldn't get the jar off his face.

One time, my wife baked two made-from-scratch cheesecakes. We walked into the kitchen to find my lab standing on the counter (all fours up on the countertop), finishing off the last of the second cake. That was nine blocks of cream cheese. He didn't sh*t right for weeks.

He at three dozen blueberry muffins (paper and all)

He eats any toy that squeaks. I pulled a jagged piece of a squeaky fire hydrant out of his butt one time. It was as big around as a large lemmon. The crazy dog somehow managed to get the entire thing through his digestive system. When I finally got the thing out, he jumped on me and gave me a tongue bath unlike any I'd ever seen. He would've followed me to hell and back twice over on that day.

One of my collies will go after anything with real animal fur on it, too. ANYTHNIG. He will attack the hell out of those little squeaky mouse toys covered with fur...it is a sight to see...

Had a vet cut a tumor off of a cow's face. He tossed it on the ground and a friends dog came and ate it up. That same dog loved to eat the testicles too when they castrated cows.

We have horses. My lab and lab mix eat grass and leaves just like the horses. Makes walks annoying. Not only do they stop for normal reasons, but they have to stop to eat too.

Thankfully, they don't eat things they are not suppossed to such as batteries, corn cobs, toys, rags, etc (all things I've seen labs eat).

my Brittany likes pistachios, sunflower seeds, peanuts, carrots, grapes. its a site to see with her and the first three. she will actually crack them open in her teeth and leave the shell behind. being a bird dog we gave her quail wings and heads after our hunts and every once in awhile a whole quail that is shot up to badly to be cleaned, watched her eat it whole in 2 gulps, was crapping feathers for a week

its called hunting not killing

Sarge used to love to eat cicadas. He would catch them and let them buzz in his mouth for a few seconds before he crunched them up.

Gus eats wasps. He is a bad MF.

RamblinRogue88's dog got into a bag of halloween candy. He then proceeded to crap candy bar wrappers throughout the yard.

My mini dachshund eats kittens, gophers and moles, my lab/pit mix must be part goat because he will eat anything. He once ate the plastic keyfob off my riding mower. He ate part of his dog-loo doghouse, he ate part of the saddlebags off my motorcycle, and last but not least Chopper ate a bottle of motor oil.

I forgot the hard boiled eggs (shell and all) and small rocks.
