Dad and I are going offshore fishing this weekend in Port Aransas. Can anyone recommend a GOOD (read: not a chain) restaurant in Port A?

Pelican Club....take money. Don't confuse w/ Pelican Landing.

Castaways ??? Used to be pretty good, but havent been there in a while. WAS a little more reasonable than Pelicans or Trout St.

not sure of the name but it is between Port A and Corpus. Before you go over the Causeway into corpus its on your left. Also try the crazy cajun in Port A.

You are referring to Snoopy's. I would highly recommend it as well. It is always a must stop when I'm in Port A. Exit right before the bridge and it is on the left.

Enjoy!

Snoopy's is definitely a legend, but the place next to it has a better veriety of non-fried seafood. If you're looking for a place in Port A, I recently was there with a buddy and we went to the restaurant next to the mexican food place and they had outstanding seafood. Sorry I can't remember the specific names of the places, but if you are exiting from the ferry, take a right and the two restaurants will be on your right just down the block. Both have good menus, depending on if you're interested in mexican food or seafood. The amberjack sauteed in butter and garlic was unbelievably good. Bring your appetite too if you order the full size plate instead of the half order. I had all I could handle with the half plate and I can usually put it away!

Enjoy Port A and send back a fishing report.

The Wharf is the name of the restaurant you are trying to think of...

Highly recommended.

Once again...Pelican Club is the best and most expensive...Prior to, it was Beaulah's behind the Tarpon Inn. At that time the owner also ran The Other Guys(yellow building on the corner of Alison & Cotter which was also good) Closed both and moved the cooks to Pelican Club.

Venetian Hot Plate is next IMO.

Pelican Landing and Trout Street are about the same. Pelican Landing will cook your fish. If I am alone I usually go to Trout Street.

We have probably taken more than a hundred different guests out to eat in Port A. I have one friend that likes Castaway's and that is because of their flounder.

I like this place...big fisherman...anyone else? Not fancy, but IMO really good seafood. It's large and they can serve a lot of people fast.

Is the Crazy Cajun still around? That was a good time place.

The Wharf is excellent, definitely the best seafood I had when I went down there for a week long getaway

The Quarter Deck...best place ever at Port A to hang out, eat boiled shrimp and have a beer.

Taco Rama...great breakfast tacos...closed at 11:00am...reopened at 5:00pm as the Shrimp House...good fried stuff and cold beer.

Bufatso's....best Pizza on the Island

Beaman's...great pastry and coffee...local hangout

All of these along with Tortuga Flats...closed.

Not to hijack the thread, but is the Sun Chaser in South Padre still open?

I heard (on one of these forums) that Beaman's closed down.

Port Royal is so far down the island, we usually just hit an HEB and stay put.

I don't know about the Sun Chase but they miffed me in 1975 when they named their condo after my boat.

A couple ran Beaman's....sorta....she worked and he didn't. I think she just said that's it. I heard it has reopened, maybe under another name.

I haven't been but I have heard that Cotter Street Coffee House has picked up the local breakfast group.

I echo Allen76. Get in your car, drive over to Rockport, and eat at the Big Fisherman. It's the right thing to do.

....take a lunch cause you will spend a couple of hours on the ferry and the trip during a holiday weekend.

The Big Fisherman is the ideal place to eat on your way back north. Right on one of the main roads back, and kind of extends your vacation another hour.

I found Hu Dat one time but it was closed...I think it was closed on Sundays. Dont know if its any good, but wanted to see the Dat memorabilia I would assume would be on their wall.

we used to hit a bakery (Angel's?) EARLY for donuts and excellent breakfast tacos. They had ridiculous carne guisada tacos as well.

I think they were in Aransas Pass but its been many years.

Angel's is still in Aransas Pass on Wheeler(35) Same street as the best Whataburger in the state of Texas.

San Juan Taqueria on Cut-Off Rd. is the best place in Port Aransas. It's fairly cheap, great service, and tastiest food on the island.

Birdman picked a pretty good place but you've got to realize that he is a tight ass. Zero prizes were awarded in his Birdman Quiz's.

It is really very good but it's hard not to eat Mexican food once you go.

If you have trouble finding it...it's actually Taqueria San Juan.

Make the run to Snoopy's. You'll thank me later. I would suggest you order the combo platter(Old english style fried fresh mahi mahi, fried oysters--even though no "r" in June, and fried shrimp. Wash it down with a cold Corona. P.S. don't forget the malt vinegar for the fish!
