Even Phil said it beat the pipe on one of the Northwestern's pots last year. I have to agree, although the pipe was pretty good.

Why don't all the fishing boats do the smaller brown (maybe?) season before king crab? It said they maid 90,000 per deckhand. That plus king and opelia is raking in some serious cash.

I think the brown season is like 90 days....$90,000 is great money but on a per day basis I think it's less than king. I don't know if the allotment plays a part in brown like it does in kings.

Brown crab fishery is a real grind. It last 3 to 4 months. And you might hit port once per month. Almost every brown boat processes their catch. They catch the crabs, then clean them, and freeze them. Then they are packaged.

Boats have to be setup differently. Because of this, there isn't as much overlap between brown and red kings as you might expect. With the shift from Olympic system to quota system, you see even less crossover.

Corny Marie says "Hey we don't want to outfit with freezers, so Early Dawn you lease our brown crab quota".

Then Early Dawn says "okay, we'll trade your brown quota for our red quota and we won't have to switch over either".

FYI - Brown crab is sold as golden crab at restaurants.

birdman,

Why do they string the pots differently for browns vs reds? I didn't quite understand that (I don't think they gave the reason?)....

83,

Why are the brown crab pots tied together in one sting?

I think it's because the browns are fished in much deeper water. I think it much more efficient to run your string through the block once and keep the pots coming at such a deep depth.
birdman

Brown crab live about 1,000 feet deeper than red king. It's quicker and easier to string the pots together along the bottom instead of hauling up 200 fathoms of line for every pot.

Yea, some of the stuff in there is for ratings, but most of it is probably as they show it. Like last season when they caught that guy going overboard, they wouldn't every try to stage something like that.

You have to know that there is a lot of editing....on the other hand for some one that loves fishing the Gulf of Mexico the waves are beyond belief. I've got slapped with a wave or two but don't remember ten feet of green water washing across my deck.....That's what makes it so good to me especially since one of the idiots that I know that worked up there is now on terra firma.

Likewise we wouldn't be having a discussion on Marpol if we knew the camera boat hauled in the truck and dumped it back on the dock at Kodiak.....Editing....just show the good stuff.

There's a lot of guys jumping on the MMA bandwagon too. Not accusing, just saying the same arguement applies.

Maybe up in Alaska you would talk about being a crabber if you wanted to get wasted or laid, but that doesn't make sense on this board. I think a third reason to "fess up" to being a crabber is because he may have the knowledge to answer a ton of questions posed by a bunch of Ags. I'd be willing to bet birdman hasn't got any internet tater because of his posts.

Too cold...Why don't you just lay out what he said that was so wrong. You slithered into this great "year" old thread knowing absolutely nothing about him. Lay it out real quick because I'm guessing your credability is fixing to take a hit.

When we went to a bar in Anchorage or Seattle, the locals generally steered clear of us - we were rough customers. If they found out we worked on Bering Sea - they steered VERY clear of us. It might be different now with the popularity of the show.

Heck, not even my specialty and I know what a catcher/processor is.

Gee, this could get fun to watch. Birdman, thanks for the info.

TooCold--in about 20 seconds of playing on google, you can find all sorts of info on fisher/processor crab boats. You can learn about their increased usage in Alaskan waters. You can also learn how they can be rigged to run pot or run long lines as need be.

back on topic...

birdman:

when it says the Hillstrands were the first to unload @ Dutch, and the first to get paid, is their season over? I realize quota's are everything, but if a boat did real well, came back and unloaded, with enough time left in the season, would they ever pick up a new quota and head back out for more?

I guess the easy way of saying it is...do they go in to each season with a set amount to catch NO MATTER WHAT, or is there opportunity to make/catch more if you get the job done real fast?

"Nowadays, increasing numbers of Alaska king crab fishing boats are getting converted into catcher/processors. In this way, the Alaska crab fishing industry provides more employment through the processing of crabmeat. These boats employ the standard five-person Alaska crab fishing crew, with additional workers to process the crabmeat. The methods of harvesting in these boats are different from those used by regular crab boats. However, once the traps are hauled aboard, the crabs are either stored in live tank, sorted, gilled, cooked, bagged, split or frozen. As other Alaska crab fishing boats, the crab catcher/processor also buys other boats' hauls to process them in addition to their own."
http://www.cvtips.com/king_crab_industry_employment.html Not the greatest source in the world, but if a general job description site knows about it, it's not exactly unknown.

It's amazing what you can come up with if you use google (Available in even Flower Mound.....as well as Anchorage)

There were other shows prior to Deadliest Catch that showed the catcher-processors as well as the offshore processors.

I had asked about the Alaska Ranger...which sank in March 2008...in an earlier thread. I thought it was one of the large processors that was on a show several years ago. I was amazed at how large "that" boat was....they had a soccer field on the deck.
