Where would yall recommend going fishing in the B/CS area? My girlfriend and I really want to go fishing somewhere rather close but can’t think of two many places. We have tried Lake Summerville but didn’t have too much luck there. I have heard that the George Bush Library is a good place to fish. Would any of yall agree with that? If so, what would you recommend for bait? I have also wondered about the Brazos River. Is it a good place to catch some catfish? HAHA o yea, yall will love this one, I got her a fishing license for valentines day!

HAHA, no problem. Make sure you can sneak away with her driver’s license so they can copy/ scan the info on it. Academy didn’t give me any problems on Saturday with hers. Just make sure she signs it when you give it to her. I love it, nothing says I love you like a gift from Texas Parks and Wildlife.

I spent alot of mornings fishing at Big Creek Marina down in Lyons on Lake Somerville I believe. Gotta get their early for good spots but tons of crappie. Caught a few catfish and bass around there too.

Hell, after lookin a little bit, they even have a website. Man, good times..

I have had good luck catfishing under the bridge on the Brazos west of the Beef ctr. Your best luck will be when the river is lower and towards the end of the spring semester. We used live perch on the bottom around sunset and on into the night. watch for snakes and take a machete to clear a path.

Somerville is good, but you have to go to the right places. Particularly, the Island off the end of Welch Creek city park, the entrance to which is near the dam. The water between the island and the main park is only a few inches to maybe a foot deep usually, and long casts off the island into the main lake with live minnows or shad on a hook and sinker Feb-April is usually a good way to catch a LOT of white bass and a few catfish.

Rocky Creek park on the other side of the lake, by the second boat ramp can be good also.

IF the spillway is releasing lots of water in the spring, summer, down from the spillway is ok, too.

the GB library is great for bass and bluegill-anywhwere there's running water, there's bass.

Central park (the small pond) is also an interesting place to fish. It's stocked with adult catfish in the summer (1-3 lbs) and rainbow trout in the winter. It's not a bad little fishing spot. The larger pond has some bass in it, but you kinda gotta be good like me to catch 'em

Is the central park that you are talking about somewhere on campus? What would you recommend for bait with the catfish? Stink bait usually works fine for me

Thanks for all yalls responses

it's on Krenek Tap (it's behind the softballs fields that you can see on 6 between 2818 and Southwest Parkway)

Check the TPWD for the stocking schedule. We did this as well, usually going out the day after it had been stocked. But beware, although this was meant as a type of "kid fish", you are gonna have to compete for spots between ladies from Bryan. Because they are watching that schedule too.

^^^

trust me, sometimes those things just don't bite...no matter how many there are in there...

I've had better luck from 9-11 AM and 3-5 PM...must be the hatchery schedule...

Is that lake still out east of town? I want to say it was Bryan City Lake but not sure-it was always the color of chocolate milk-totally muddy, but had some good fish in it.

You practically need a boat to fish much of the lake. A lot of it would be fishable on foot except they have it closed to fishing, like the spillway and the dam riprap. If you have a boat, it is a great crappie and bass lake, and has some good catfishing too.

Gibbons creek is the place to go for channel cats....been there three times and have never come home empty handed!!

Do you fish from a boat or the bank? How much does it cost (I think it does cost right?)?

aggiegolfer03

it costs $4 per person...(which I did not realize one day when the wife and I went with $4 between us)...

I went to central park this evening and didnt have any luck. On the Texas Park and Wildlife website it said that they were going to stock the pond today. I didnt get a single bite. Maybe they didnt stock it today or maybe they just put some small trout in.

They stock it tomorrow, you read the date wrong. Its saying February 8, 2007. Hope that helps.

Yes, the trout stocked at Central Park are very small (about 8" ). If you were the only one out there, that should tip you off that you didn't stock them. When the state shows up with their fish truck, it's usually a-hole to elbow around the small pond.

Best bait for them there is the colored Berkley bait that comes in a jar that looks like pea-sized pieces of Play Dough (Academy sells it). Put it on a small hook under a bobber and catch whatever you want. Then sell the stuff to everyone else trying to use corn and hotdogs with little luck.

Bull ****....Every one I've caught (80 or so) has been 10"-17" (yes, I caught a monster)....

Glad to hear things have changed. 10 years ago or so when I was in school, all of the stocked fish were small.
aggiegolfer03
How long do you want to ignore this user?
sorry didn't mean to snap...

yeah, the ones in the conroe pond this year are like that...but the ones here are all big enough to eat, and big enough to put up a good fight...
Houston_Ag

All the catfish I caught from the small pond were tiny as well...like around 3 inches or so. Not too bad to sit there on a cold winter afternoon with an ultralight with 4 pound test and a little stink bait. Not big enough to eat, but beats the hell out of watching TV, or sitting in class.
aggiegolfer03
How long do you want to ignore this user?
yeah, I don't know how so many mudcats got into that little pond...

You can catch bigger ones over the summer when they're stocked, and you catch a random 1-3 lber trout fishing...especially if you fish with corn...

I am heading out to central park. Thanks Houston_Ag for the tip on the bait. Hopefully we will have some luck.

BTW is it catch and release?

i am heading to big creek marina for some crappie fishing this weekend, never been but the bf says its a great crappie place.

if you want cats, welch park in sommerville is excellent. you have to go where its real sandy, we always go to the banks on the left as soon as you enter. we have never left w/less than 6 cats there, blue & channel. the whitebass & stripers also run through there (the whites LOVE crawfish).

i also go to gibbons a time or two. i like to go to the spillway, they have crappie & lots of kitties. its also easy to get to but you should get there early.

cspd pond & gabbard park are fun to fish if you just want to fish & aren't looking for a monster. apparently though the cspd pond has quite a bit crappie.

Anybody have any luck yesterday at central park?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I caught one at lunch yesterday-on a crappie jig...

There's a family from Katy that fishes it every time after they stock...they'll be out there with like 15 rods surrounding the fountain...It's so annoying I actually emailed the TPWD...
