I had a red heeler many years ago. Great dog. However, very dog aggressive. She died too young of cancer.
Smart as a whip and loved her people. She was a tank though - 80lbs. I think she was mixed with a German shepherd

Pudelpointer fits your bill. We rescued one 12 years ago. She was about 1 and found in Louisiana. We've never hunted her but from all accounts they are great bird dogs. I can attest that she's the best family dog we've ever had. Still spry and going strong.
