I had a red heeler many years ago. Great dog. However, very dog aggressive. She died too young of cancer.
Smart as a whip and loved her people. She was a tank though - 80lbs. I think she was mixed with a German shepherd

Guy I work with just suggested Chad. That's where he got his (that I saw in the field).

Pudelpointer fits your bill. We rescued one 12 years ago. She was about 1 and found in Louisiana. We've never hunted her but from all accounts they are great bird dogs. I can attest that she's the best family dog we've ever had. Still spry and going strong.

Another vote for field cockers. Got one 6yrs ago from Muddy Paws and has been a great dog. Wanted to downsize from labs - but still have a family hunt dog. Very birdy, high drive when outside, but lots of chill, and loves water.

I talked to Phil at length today. What a good guy.

One of those pups may be mine.

Thanks to everyone on this thread. TexAgs outdoors board strikes again.

Great advice, phone calls and people taking time out of their day to help me, awesome referrals.

Put a deposit down on a cute little red and white cocker.

Pick her up in November.

My wife asked, in a good way, if I found all this info and referral through TexAgs. She knows it's a great source of info

We love our GSP. But she definitely needs the room to run around and burn off that energy. Don't skimp on the training.

A couple of weeks ago I flew from Denver to Houston and back. In both airports there were TSA agents with GSPs. One was standing at the security line while the dog was scenting passengers waiting in line, the other one was walking through the terminal with the dog walking quickly back and forth on its leash. I hadn't seen this before so I did a search and found that it's becoming common. The reasons given were that GSPs are highly trainable and their appearance isn't intimidating to the public.

this isn't what you consider a small dog and it's not the first dog everyone thinks of when you say hunting dog, but I love my golden retrievers. They'll do anything to please you. The one that I worked deliberately with and made a dove hunting dog was an absolute machine in the field. She was the best friend you could ever have when when hunting or not hunting. Only drawback to them is they pick up every cocklebur out there.
