My alpine racing coaching career begins this season. Will probably be ushering U8s or U10s around 3 days/week.

Yeah, I was thinking Sept1 is a good date to roll over Tia new thread.

I've been watching the rise and alpine dude on YouTube skiing Chile. Looks very doable. Not super steep and barely a tree to be seen, but so much snow to just choose your own path every time. I would get so lost with all the clouds and white outs.

Back in my part of the world, I've got the perfectly scaled paper templates from that powder guide site in Germany. Planning on trying it once on a piece of plywood as a test before I install the bindings on my skis. The key will be to get a very precise punch and take great care to keep the bit centered to start the hole. I got the specified 3.5x9.5 but for the ski. And yep, I've been told to measure and mark from the ski tips and sides and measure and measure again. But first, the test run.

I'll be at Schweitzer a crap ton and comp weekends at Mt. Spokane and Lookout. If we can get our place in Montana sold, we might might look at taking the kids to Sun Valley for the World Cup Finals.

Was just coming to Outdoors board to post a new year. I guess we're all aligned.

Thinking about picking up some slightly wider sticks for more powdery days. Something like a 105ish. Currently circling the Moment Contach 104 or Jskis Hotshot 104. I love the top sheets on so many of j's skis but none of the ones on that model.

Guys trip planned to heavenly in Feb. Trying to sort out spring break. Thinking maybe PC. Trying to plan another fa.ily trip for maybe mlk. Don't know where we can get from Houston for a quick weekend that won't be a zoo.

Got annual flights to Steamboat booked for early February! 2 of the 3 kids are out of ski school! So pumped to ride with them every year.

Anyone skied Red, Panorama, or Revelstoke?

I'm not sure it'll happen this year, but I do want to take a trip up to BC and go check out some new terrain soon.

Revel several times.

Big White? It's closer to you. 4 3/4 hours by car. Saves you an hour and 15 to 30 vs Revel. That's a nothing for a ski dad. Save the flight money and use it for the lodging. CA lift prices aren't bad at all after currency conversion. Great long weekend trip. If you want to do both, spring break is usually a great time up there because as you know it isn't as cold and it can be COLD. 3 days at each is perfect.

Red, Rev, and Panorama are on ikon, that would probably be a relatively reasonable upgrade price instead of the Schweitzer only.

Practice mounted one of the bindings to a board using the template last night and it went well. Might do the skis Monday. Learned a few things so I am glad I did a test run

Hoping to take my 6 and 8 year old on their first ski trip this spring. Their spring break is on the earlier side (Mar 8 - 12), so hopefully we'll be just ahead of peak spring break crowds.

Trying to narrow in on a ski resort that balances convenient travel from Houston, ease of skiing day logistics, ski school quality, and cost. I'm an intermediate / advanced skier, so I don't need expert terrain to have a great time.

I've recently skied Telluride, Deer Valley, Northstar, and Breck. Don't really care to go back Breck. The others seem crazy expensive with kids and ski school factored in.

Any thoughts?

Purgatory?

It's not a great hill but it's better than anything in Texas and better than Breck. Cheap lift tickets and lessons.

Anywhere VR/Alterra/PWDR are going to be expensive on the lessons.

I'm sure it's pricey being Alterra but I grew up skiing mostly at Winter Park. It was great back then for kids programs.

Wolf Creek might be worth looking at. 3 hr drive up from Santa Fe.

I think kids under a certain age ski free at Purg. That makes it cheaper. It also has really affordable lift tickets on non holiday weeks if you buy early. As long as the snow shows up, it's a pretty nice place to ski. It's rare for lines to be long at lifts except Christmas to new years. 16 or so hours from Houston.

Wolf creek is also good. It's not as easy to get to, driving the pass every day, and the hill isn't quite as visitor friendly, but it usually has a ton of snow and it's god some good green pods for beginners.

There's also red river but I'd wait to see what the snow does going into the season.

Because I like you I'm giving this advice:

DONT DO IT ALONE THE FIRST TIME YOU MOUNT YOUR BINDINGS.

I put that in all caps because I'm yelling it at you.

Please please please - find a shop or a friend that mounts or even a complete stranger off Facebook with the experience. Have someone with experience there with you JUST TO DOUBLE CHECK your jig and the holes before you drill.

If you don't have someone and you're in CO or TX, let me know and the next time I'm in the state I'll take a trip to see ya and we can do it together.

I don't say that because I don't trust you. I don't say that because I don't think you can do it. I'm saying that because there's a fine line between correctly mounted bindings and not just ruining your skis but hurting yourself on a level you probs can't imagine.

In the 10+ years of working in shops, I've seen people w mismounted bindings break the following: both thighs, back, neck, both arms, and the list goes on and on. Usually those breaks are accompanied by some sort of ligament damage too.

Oldest shop in vail went belly up because of the liability from a pair of mismounted bindings.

What are the bindings? If I have the jig, I'm happy to mail it to you so that you at the minimum have the factory jig.

After you've done it once with a friend and the guide, you're good but the first time ease at least have someone to review before you punch.

Please be safe my man. Please please please.

Note: if you have a manual structure tool or riller bar when you mount the bindings it's a great time to add a non factory structure to the base.

And just a friendly reminder to those with boots and helmet:

Proper boots storage:

Out of direct sun
Nothing left inside them that may pressure the liner or foot bed
Buckled to the same tension that you ski
Dry Climate controlled room that doesn't drop below about 50 or above 90.

Proper helmet storage:

Same as boots

When to replace boots:

Any cracks on outside shell
150/200 ski days
6-8 years
Packed out liner
Broken hardware
ADVANCED SKILL LEVEL

When to replace helmet:

Cracks, dents, or deep scratches on the outer shell.
Inner foam that feels soft, spongy, or shows flat spots.
Frayed, stretched, or damaged chin straps and broken buckles.
AND THE BIGGEST ONE OF ALL: after EVERY hard fall. If your head hits the ground ice a tree or anything else that would've exploded your melon, time for a new helmet regardless of visible damage. The vibration through the shell and liner is degraded.

Helmets are intended to save your **** ONCE. After the first hard fall, the integrity deteriorates significantly and you can't see it. Obviously they still work, but at a far far far lower funcionality.

Old helmets are probs the piece of gear we see used too long by most recreational skiers.

Edited to add:

We also NEVER wear 2 pairs of socks and we never tuck anything into our boot including or long handles. The only thing that goes in your boot is a sock.

That also means NEVER put foot warmers like hot hands in your boot and if you do have that bad idea NEVER put the under your toes. ALWAYS on top or you'll burn your toes off: literally.

We also never match all spyder and especially not all matching w an all matching partner unless you speak Spanish. If you speak Spanish, it's 100% allowed.

If you speak Spanish you're also allowed to wear a microwave jacket. Otherwise, let's let that trend die folks. We need the mountain as cold as we can keep it.

Need some Texags help.

This years shop theme is 80s action TV shows. Each month will be a different theme. So far we have

November: A-Team
December: MacGyver
January: Magnum, P.I.
February: Knight Rider
March: Airwolf
April: Miami Vice (warmer weather)

Any other suggestions?

Hmmm. Maybe I should be too hasty. It's some marker griffon 13's. All the ski stamps show 3.5mmx9.5mm holes and the bindings spec 4NM torques which is about 36in/lb.

We are targeting keystone in February
I see epic has sale price thru September 7th. Any idea how much it will go up after the 7th?
We're only skiing 3 days
If it's only $10/ day more after the 7th I might wait till we finalize for sure. If its $50/ day I would likely buy now
Bayou City
How long do you want to ignore this user?
You won't be able to buy day passes after some day. I don't think it's today but it may be. Usually they send out a big email annd have it posted anll over the ****s: Only discounted lift tickets. Big difference between those 2 flexibility wise and the price is about double the day pass. IIRC day lift windows were like $200-240 a day last season peak days. 170-200 non peak. Basically BOGO until end of that day and then they rape your ass. Iirc that days usually early October.

I think prices go up like incrementally $10/15 a week or so until the stop selling them. Passes jump like $50/60 a week.

Little known trick for people buying Epic Passes this year - full epic or epic local.

If you went skiing last season AFTER passes went on sale late March through April, you bought a day lift ticket (the expensive ones and sometimes even buddy passes), and you decide that you'd like to buy a pass this year…. You can call Darth Vader and have them apply those past season lift ticket expenses towards your this season pass.

Example:

You went to Vail last season before they closed but after epic passes went on sale:

We well say you skied March 25th and 26th

You went to the window and purchased a lift ticket for $249 or $173 if a buddy pass and skied that day.

Let's say you did that again the next day.

If you paid $249x2=$498.00. That's basically half of your this season pass credited.

If you skied 4 or more at full price, you have a free pass and just need to contact them to set it up.

I loved this trick when I worked in PSS.

Struggling to come up with a family plan for this season. I have epic local. Was tentatively planning park city for spring break. Wife was pushing for whistler but I'm worried they're going to have a ****ty snow year. Especially by March. Might just buy them all 5 day passes and figure it out later. Flights to both slc and Vancouver are dumb right now and my wife doesn't do well waiting closer to trip time to book flights.

El Niño will be good to UT & CA. Have you thought about Heavenly? They should have great snow this year and are epic local unlimited.

Do you currently have a pass anywhere? Where's home base?

Taos? heavenly? Palisades? Telluride? Steamboat?

Steamboat is becoming the next bougie spot in CO.
