Suppressors and deer hunting

I've never fired a gun with a suppressor on it, so I'm genuinely curious about this. This question came from the youth rifle thread a few days ago

Other than the noise reduction, what is the benefit of deer hunting suppressed? I can understand hog hunting or even coyote hunting, when you possibly have multiple targets and want to get as many as possible before they all flee from the noise, but I don't see the added benefit when it comes to deer hunting.

In my limited experience deer hunting, everything I've killed has only needed one shot (hill country low fence hunting for me).

Is it simply because it makes the shot more quiet?

Real answers expected, and OB answers preferred.

Reduced muzzle blast, reduced recoil, helps keep the neighbors out of your business.

They can be cumbersome but once you get used to hunting with them, it's hard to go back. No more bombs going off in the blind with you.

I know a lot of people prefer to hunt without hearing protection, which makes sense.

And shrug off potential hearing damage from just that one shot….because its just one shot.

But its a lot of potential damage, and that risk is increased if you're shooting near reflective surfaces….like a hunting blind.

Hearing damage is cumulative and cant be repaired.

Reducing the risk with a suppressor is just plain smart.

Eta: also, if you want to try shooting suppressed, reach out! Always happy to introduce an Ag to new gun stuff.

End of thread. Been 6 seasons with a suppressor now and not sure I can ever go back now.

The biggest surprise for me the first time I shot a deer with a suppressed rifle, the thud of the bullet hitting the deer.

IMO once you start shooting suppressed you wont ever shoot unsuppressed.

You will want to use it because you will shoot better with it. Once you try it and get the reduced noise and recoil, your groups will improve and it will give you that much more confidence.

Everything listed above...but will add. If you do go the suppressor route, you need to zero with it on. POI will be different suppressed vs. unsuppressed no matter how minimal the suppressor companies claim it to be.

Trying to save the hearing I have left in my right ear after shooting a braked rifle without ear protection on my last trip to Montana.

The noise mitigation should not be easily dismissed.

Personally I don't see any benefit when shooting rifles capable of harvesting deer that justifies the added expense. That's my personal preference. I'm all vanilla. I always wear hearing protection no matter what just because there's no good reason not to. My rifle has a 26" barrel and honestly, I don't like a bunch of junk hanging on the end of it no matter what the length is.

I'd encourage you to try it out for yourself and pick whatever makes you happy and works for your situation. Good reasons here for it so you should try it and see.

I don't rifle hunt. I honestly don't really enjoy shooting guns at this point. Don't like the noise, don't like the recoil. don't like disrupinting my quiet time in the woods. Anyting over a .22 LR I just don't care to shoot anymore. Shooting was about all we did growing up on our farm and I'm pretty darn close to deaf now as a result.

My kids' deer rife(a Howa mini action in 6.5 grendel) is threaded already so I've been considering getting a suppressor for it. I'd probably take it out and shoot hogs with it myself if it was suppressed. I've never had one but I definitely think I'd be more likely to get out and hunt w a rifle again if I did.

are you all still shooting supersonic rounds for deer hunting?

It should be understood that repeated exposure above 85 decibels will still damage the small nerve hair cells within the cochlea of the inner ear. Usually causing high frequency hearing loss first… as the first part of the cochlea is the high frequency part. It progresses to lower frequency hearing loss the further the damage goes inside the cochlea.

Even with a good suppressor, shooting certain cartridges at supersonic speeds can still have the potential to damage your hearing with repeated exposure if you are not wearing some type of hearing protection.

I have lost over 40% of my hearing due to many years of racing loud outboards and boats, running chain saws, power tools and shooting in my younger years without hearing protection.
I also have severe tinnitus.
I see an otologist/neurologist every year to monitor my hearing. He knows I shoot a lot and he himself is an avid hunter and shooter. He heavily recommends suppressors..but also cautions that people should still wear hearing protection when shooting certain cartridges at supersonic speeds….even while using a suppressor.

There is some accurate specs and data available that allows you to look up your cartridge/caliber types and see what the average sound decibels that are produced by that cartridge with different barrel lengths. Then you can look up the sound reduction specs of the suppressor you are using and you can figure out how many decibels of sound is still reaching your ears as a general average.

The advantage is, other than those things already stated by others, is when using suppressors, you don't have to wear muffs or in-ear canal plugs with such high a NRR rating as when you are not using a suppressor which allows greater comfort and still be able to hear some conversation.

Hollywood has made people think that having a suppressor makes all firearms "James Bond Quiet". You can approach and realize that quiet performance only with a good suppressor and sub sonic ammunition.

Tinnitus absolutely sucks.

I bought an Alexander Arms 6.5 Grendel last year because none of my deer rifles have threaded barrels. I will eventually get around to buying the suppressor.
I don’t say this in a braggedocious way. But it’s true. I’ve been right about everything.

The general answer is yes. The 30 cals have shown mixed results with subsonics. Some foks claim its sufficient but lots of reports of lost animals. Ive had great results with subsonic 45s but it's a pretty niche area. And for most foks/ setups, range is limited to 75-100 yards. Basically, it can be done effectively but you need to put some effort into it if you want consistent clean kills. Not a fan of just going and buying a box of subsonic 300bo and shooting deer to see how it works.

Im with yall on tinnitus. Im still amazed to look back and think that no one bothered to tell us to use hearing protection as kids. My left ear is ringing as I type this. I now wear hearing protection for almost anything I do. My ears are on the edge of wreaked. Any loud noise sets them off for weeks. Often wear plugs and muffs and it's still not enough.

Believe me.... Tinnitis absolutely SUCKS! I spent years shooting shotguns and rifles during my younger years without ear protection. I am now paying the price for that stupidity. I thought I was tough back then and it was not cool to wear ear protection. If I knew back then, what I know now, there is no way I would shoot any gun without hearing protection. I won't let my daughter shoot without ear protection and I have engrained in her the need for it. I don't want her going through what I go through on a daily basis for the rest of her life. It's that important.

Our generation got hearing damage from shooting and machinery. The current generation will get it from earbuds.

My boy missed a doe twice with a suppressed 6mm arc (his first deer ever). The deer looked up after the first shot and then went back to eating. After the second miss they looked up and moved on. They didn't bolt and scatter. It was the craziest thing. It was still plenty loud enough but the suppression of the concussion really kept them from bolting. He got the same doe the very next morning.

So there's that advantage I guess. Definitely helps with recoil and follow up shots.

This is like asking why would anyone want a Corvette with 400hp when you can get from point A to point B in an Accord with 200hp. Yes, both will get the job done, but one is a much more enjoyable experience.

Sounds like we are brothers here. Just about every word you just posted is my exact words.
Both my ears ring constantly. Loud enough to wake me up at night sometimes. Hearing aids help but can't wear hearing aids all night.
I have had it for well over 25 years.

My Otologist says my hearing, even with me being a fanatic on protecting it, will still decline as I age as the damage is cumulative as Bender stated.
The continued loss of hearing is going to make the tinnitus increase.
Right now, thank our God, my hearing has stabilized over the last two annual appointments.
He said the best thing we can do to preserve hearing, besides wearing protection, is to have good blood flow to the ear and brain by doing daily cardio exercises.
Stay strong my friend.

I've posted once on this thread already, but feel the need to do it again. It is so important to protect your hearing. As Gunny and others have stated.... Tinnitis and hearing loss absolutely sucks. The constant ringing that never quits can be overwhelming at times, especially at night when all is quiet around you. Trust me, you do NOT want to deal with it. Please, please protect your hearing.

As long as there is proper shot placement. That is always a very critical part of the results….regardless of caliber or cartridge type.

My youngest got her first deer with a suppressed .223. And a few pigs with that same gun too. It works as long as you use good ammo, good shot placement and stay within the limitations of the round.

Just like any other chambering out there.

I like them because it is awful nice to not have to worry about plugs or ear muffs as part of the "see the deer, get the gun up quietly, settle in, make a good shot" in the ~30 second window I usually have where I hunt.

While the Surefire earplugs are far more comfortable than most, they still get old wearing after a while. And ear muffs always get in the way for me and my right one ends up having separation almost every time, which defeats the purpose of wearing them to begin with.

Other than that, suppressors are just awesome. I prefer the slightly forward balance of having one on - makes it easier to steady IMO. Throw in the reduced sound and reduced recoil and its a no brainer for me. I like that I can shoot and only a couple of people in my immediate vicinity know I've shot versus the other guys on our lease that everybody knows they shot.

Just another statement about how bad tinnitus & hearing loss sucks. Back in the 60's & 70's we didn't know what hearing protection was in my area. Shooting and loud music did what they do. And people get frustrated when you say "huh?" too much!

I use a can on all my rifles. I am also 60% loss on right ear and 50% loss on left ear. I'm 43 and am looking to get hearing aids sooner than later if my insurance goes through. If they are not going to cover it, I will be getting them abroad, as they are substantially cheaper even with a flight and hotel added.

I will say, if you ever get one for western hunting, buy the lightest one you can afford.
