Worse problems for BBNP. Elephant Butte reservoir in New Mexico that feeds the Rio Grande is less than 1.5% full. Two days ago they shut all the water off flowing out of the dam. The Rio Grande is not flowing below the dam at all.

The Rio Grande is often dry is El Paso and downstream from there. Most of the water you see in the Rio Grande in BBNP comes from the Rio Conchos in Mexico.

Not saying Elephant Butte being low isn't a bad thing for the upper Rio Grande, but doesn't have big impact on BB for much of the year. Hopefully a Super El Nino refills everything within a thousand miles of the 4 corners area

And the Rio Conchos is in peril as well.
The issue long term is water usage. One rain event isn't going to fix everything. Just look at Powell, Mead, Elephant Butte, Amistad etc.
Folks complaining about the border wall in BB is warranted. But how is BB going to be with a trickle running through it?

Yep. beau coup people are complaining about how these projects and new roads are going to destroy the natural habitat of the Big Bend area and how long it would take it to recover. How about the damage that current and past human tourism has caused and still causes on a regular basis? How about the roads that have been cut to get folks down to the river so they can kayak or canoe down it? How about the roads that were built to get people and their vehicles to other popular areas like the Mariscal mine or Hot springs? How about the trash and human excrements that are left behind at campsites throughout the park? Maybe to save the park we need to close it all together. Yes I am being sarcastic here but Big Bend has been, is now and will continue to be affected by the "human touch" in the guise of tourism...

I think the goal is to accommodate human outdoors experience with minimum necessary environmental impact. I can see basically building a new River road versus the existing 4x4 keep trail isn't a huge deal except this road right of way will be like 150' wide leveled clear cut versus a 10 food wide track through the scrub and brush.

I'm more concerned they are building so close to the canyon mouth needlessly. The redo of the road path rarely gets much traffic, but as long as they're not throwing up a giant wall along the whole of it it will be OK.

I do wonder if this road actually makes smuggling easier instead of harder..

Yup.

It's the same thing and I am in the same boat. If they can't roll out a candidate better than the options we had the last three elections, then I'll just sit on my tail and watch it all go to hell.

I get both sides of this. I'm beyond over Trump at this point.

On one hand, national security and the prioritizing the value of citizneship first should be at the top for any governement. Right next to a strong military, utilities, education, and upholding the law. Otherwise there's absolutely no reason to beholden to a government. And especially give them our money.

Seeing something we hold sacred be impacted sucks. It defeats the purpsose of preserving it for the future public. In this case we're talking about a fairly small border area to a National park that is almost 1 Million acres. From what I can find this is about 200 linear miles of 1,250 square miles.

I am 100% pro wall(s), but why here when there are miles and miles of Rio Grande with no wall - for a good reason? This area is pretty easily patrolled and watched without walls.

And with so very little crossings in this location, why not less intrusive means - if they absolutely have to - cameras, sensors - which don't destroy BB?

I am all for a secure border but this "wall" is nothing but a boondoggle for friends of Trump. Nobody is crossing there except for the few Mexicans who live in Boquillas who wade across the river to sell trinkets to hikers and then go back to their village.

I see people making the argument that "well, it is only like .01% of the entirety of BBNP that will be affected" but that is like painting a giant red dildo on the front door of a church and saying "Well, 99% of the church isn't affected."

I agree with Ken Burns that National Parks are our nation's "best idea". I've been lucky enough to visit 36 of them with my kids and BBNP is one of our favorites. Our kids have learned so much about what public lands mean to a democracy, how to treat the flora and fauna with respect and have a much greater appreciation for the splendor of the natural world through their experiences at our nations' National Parks. To me a needless wall or vehicle barrier is akin to a giant dildo at the Sistine Chapel.

And as someone who is fiscally conservative, this is a giant waste of taxpayer money.

This is something for sure.
Seems to me if I put up a high fence all around my ranch except for 50 yards of the boundary fence where are all the deer going to go in and out at??? Common sense would say somewhere within that 50 yards right??
So if we have a border wall everywhere but the BBNP where are they all going to try to cross?
And unless someone on the OB actually works for the BP how does anyone on here know how many illegals cross in the park in reality?
Not arguing here just asking…

My arguments have nothing to do with how much crossing is taking place. It's what a terrible idea it is to construct a wall along a river. I'll give you that a wall in the NM or AZ desert right on the border might be worth considering.

Now take a step back and think about the logistics of building a wall along a river - can't be in the floodplain, all of the small creeks washouts that need to be crossed, can't create a future flooding hazard, much of the ground is river silt deposit, all of the private property you are crossing relies on river access (for watering livestock, irrigating farmland, industrial size water pumps with overhead electricity running to them, homes overlooking the river, etc.). The land is significantly more valuable than the desert of NM and AZ, so that is going to increase the cost dramatically, the land is significantly more divided because of the value of river access (more owners to deal with, more fences to go through). Texas is completely different than NM and AZ, yet the Engineer in Chief is applying the same solution.

I've watched "environmentalists" cheer for "green energy", that has included putting up massive wind turbines within easy view of Palo Duro Canyon, Caprock Canyons, Copper Breaks, and Medicine Mound.

I'm not thrilled about watching bulldozers in Big Bend, but if the Democrats are gonna sit on their asses and let millions of folks into the country, then act like there's no legal way to remove them (5-20 years of "due process"), then you tell ME, other than a physical barrier, how we keep another 20-40 million people from coming through the Southern border??

I'm disgusted with Republicans and Democrats for supporting all these turbines (one party for "green energy ", and one for "cheap energy for data centers"). l'm just as disgusted with the immigration (one party wants new voters, and one wants cheap labor), then wondering why the Desert Southwest is running out of space and water, when you've got an extra 40 million people (Texas, New Mexico, AZ, Cali) trying to live there.

A t-post and barbed wire fence doesn't clog with debris the way these thick bollards will.

And when I'm talking about flooding, I'm not talking about making the Rio Grande back up, I'm talking about the creeks and washouts that feed into the Rio Grande. You would be shocked at the lack of engineering that is going into crossing those creeks.

I had planned to enter an ultra distance trail race (run) there in January. And had asked about it on the Politics forum (definitely not the place to ask questions about running or safety).

With the exception of a couple posters (who implied that I would surely be killed by the cartel immediately), most folks said it's a great place, and much safer than any city in Texas.

But given the noise online about it....pi$$ed off locals, possible protests, tons of contractors and unpredictable hours, it sounds like the next couple years won't be the best time(s) to make the trip out there.
Consistency: It's only a virtue if you're not a screw-up.
