Previous protein consumption record was 1000 lbs in 3 weeks. This year….2000 lbs was consumed in just under 4 weeks. This is a 200 acre, central Texas low fence property.

I refilled it this morning. Had coyotes there overnight

We have more available food on the ground right now we have had in years during the summer months but they're still hammering the protein. We had to put timed protein feeders out in most places because the stag and aoudad were clearing that amount out in 10 days or less. Be thankful you don't have to deal with those too…

We are going through about 400# in six days right now between the whitetails, axis, and raccoons.

On the 1200 acres we had in Kimble County we fed 26,000 lbs every 6-8 weeks. 20% protein/corn mix (half and half) during winter months and pure 20% protein only during spring to late fall. In timed feeders…..bulk and spin cast. For 25 years. 24/7/365. Behrens Feed loved us.
We had great animals but….
Something I don't have to worry with or spend money on the ranch here in the Ozarks…plus feeders are not allowed here anyway. But we can have food plots! Makes hunting a lot more challenging for sure.

Oh yea. So much so they would even come fill all the feeders for "free"….and we even got Christmas cards from them!
I finally realized that I was pouring my retirement money into a feeder.
Besides the feed cost we had a horrible liability insurance cost due to doing hunts.
It simply became not worth it.
We miss seeing and messing with the animals but don't miss the feed cost, insurance cost, taxes, fixing water gaps after the floods ….. between constant multi year droughts, constantly fighting cedar trees, poachers, trailing wounded animals shot by all the expert "snipers" with their new designer cartridges etc. etc. So glad we quit doing all that….we were totally burned out.
Didn't mean to derail or rant… apologize.
