So I'm a bird hunter and know very little about aging deer. I bought 80 acres in van zandt county and have this bad boy hanging around, seems like a good one?

Tanks are putting on weight and starting to move. These three were all 5+ last year.

Wide 8 got a pass because he broke both browtines.




Current top of my hit list. Good mass, tine length, beams, and width. Pretty rare combination for around here.




I think this dude was 6+ last year. Deer beside him is 4, maybe 3, but looks like a 2yo in comparison. Not 13".

Got about 20 deer coming to a single water oak on the Navasota. Buddy that taught me about hunting public land in Louisiana always said you gotta look for the tree where a herd of goats have been feeding. Might not see a track but the grass will be beat down, leaves rustled, etc.



And then lots of broken acorn shells and half-eaten pieces.

I'm afraid our deer are hammering the live and white oaks too. I've seen traffic at protein feeders drop pretty significantly in jr last 2-3 weeks and was just told it's a great crop right now out at the ranch. Figures…

If you have legit white oaks, with the white flakey bark and big acorns, they're going to put priority on that over anything else. Almost guaranty there will be a single tree or grouping of trees where they're focused. Check the edges of draws if you have them.

Big mature live oaks can be the same way.

Now widespread live or post oaks make it tough. A tree every 30 yards, as far as you can see, and the ground crunches with every step.
