Just a rat snake. They're harmless

Cool snakes. Suffer no fools. They can get a little spicy.

Good to have unless you have young chickens. Not so good for those.

Kinda funny. My wife hates snakes. On two occasions, only a few days apart, she found a five foot long rat snake hunkering down on a freshly laid egg in our chicken coop.

A few days later, she found another snake, about 6 feet long, and in the process of swallowing a baby robin.

I released them about ten minutes from our home. What's crazy...she caught both and put them in a 55 gallon galvanized trash can.

Yeah, nature is metal, bruh.

My experience with them is similar, but usually I lose the eggs. I usually have 20-50 chicks in the spring in various stages of growth in various runs and if I am not diligent...like...hourly...I have come out to gruesome scenes. The Rat snake will try to swallow chick whole, like the baby robin you mentioned, realize it cannot swallow it, regurgitate the dead chick that it only swallowed half way, then seek out another chick and repeat the process. I've found 5 dead chicks covered in mucous where they were partially swallowed.

It's pretty crazy.

Thanks all for the ID!

I thought it might be a Rat snake but not experienced enough with snakes to be sure. Just knew it didn't have classic viper head, so wasn't overly concerned and the snake just wanted to leave once it realized it had been spotted.

Regularly rescue Garter snakes from my fat cat, but we have killed Coral and Rattlesnakes around here. Fortunately, sightings of those are becoming rarer.

If you ever have this come up again, contact Brett Parker with Canyon Lake Fire/EMS (think he is a Captain now) He has been fascinated by snakes since he was a kid and has a side business to relocate snakes. Most he ever did in the county was 14 rattlesnakes from a trailer in Canyon Lake. Does an outstanding lecture on types of snakes.

I am a member at NB Noon Lions Club. I knew him previously but he was the speaker at one of our lunches. He brought several snakes in cages. When he dropped a big rattlesnake on the stage, lots of folks freaked out

Came across one this morning while mowing. Drove under a tree and it was close enough that I could kiss it.

By the time I got off the mower to take a picture, I couldn't find it in the tree. Sneaky things.
