howdy OB board - was curious if anyone has any conservation/outdoor non-profit organizations that they are a part of or would recommend to someone. Late 20's, in the BCS area, and looking to find a group(s) to volunteer some time and get involved in.

Quick google shows me Stewards of the Wild (the TPW group). I am also an annual CCA member, but I can't find much information about the Brazos Valley chapter.

Was more so curious if anyone had any personal testimonies or groups they would personally recommend based on experience. Thanks!

I'd look into the Brazos Valley DU group. I have known the couple that help "run" that chapter and they are amazing folks.

I'd also look to see if Back Country Hunters and Anglers is established in B/CS, also another great group.

The Mayfly Project is a really good group that teaches long term foster care kids fly fishing and gets them their own gear they can keep.

Operation Game Thief with TPWD has programs for volunteers to work various events and to become involved to fight poaching. I enjoyed the people I worked with there and had lots of fun working events where they take the trailer and educate the public at various events.

Im involved with Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation local chapter and the Mule Deer Foundation. Both are great Orgs to be part of.

Texas Wildlife Association. You could say this recommendation is a bit skewed, though.

We have many volunteer opportunities through our Texas Youth Hunting Program, Texas Big Game Awards and Adult Learn to Hunt Program.

Also, our Conservation Legacy youth and adult education opportunities benefit from volunteers. Want to advocate for Texas wildlife, conservation and landowner issues? We have an Issue and Advocacy initiative that is quite active in Austin, especially when the legislature is in session.

I'm on the board for the Texas Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. We tend to be a very young organization compared to your average DU or CCA chapter and many members hunt and fish hard all over the country.

You can't go wrong getting involved with any organization, but your volunteer experience will vary greatly depending on if the chapters are primarily fundraisers like DU and CCA or more boots on the ground conservation work like a "Friends of [your favorite park/river/forest]"

I was a member of TWA for a number of years. Good organization in many ways. I stopped mainly because many members embraced and supported buying and selling whitetails. This was many years back...has their position changed on that now?

There hasn't been a conversation about that, neither for or against, since I've been there.

Roger that. That's good to know cause it is a great organization if they don't bring that into the scope.

It's not local to BCS, but in my opinion, a great organization.
