If you're the original owner, Martin has a limited lifetime warranty that I would think would cover something like that.

If you're not, I would still send it to them to see what they think. Quality makers like Martin don't want to see (and certainly don't want others to see) their guitars having this kind of damage from normal use.

Now, if something happened to the guitar...

But it doesn't appear to be impact damage.

Appreciate the heads up. I reached out to them.

The limited warranty is 20 pages long and I can tell you right now, they can deny this for any number of things as they wish, which is why it's 20 pages long. We'll see what they say.

I can tell you that I reached out to no less than 4 luthiers near me, some of whom service well known local Texas artists and no one has given me a price more than $150 for this repair unless I want it sanded, refinished to perfect, and set up. I need that hoe glued up so it doesn't fall off. I'm not Randy Rogers over here trying to make a living gigging.

Hardly worth foolin' with for $150. Glue it, tune it, play it!

Well, it seems to me you can take that $150 and buy a $150 Yamaha off Facebook marketplace, or you can can pay $150 to have your old Martin. In the end you will either have a guitar that sounds like a Martin or a guitar that sounds like a $150 Yamaha you bought from Facebook. The choice is yours

I meant for $150 it's not worth fooling with sending it to Martin. Odds of more damage are high in shipping. I'd rent repay someone locally and I'd pay may more times that price to fix what I have.

Thanks! My son started playing guitar about 6 months ago, so it's one of those things we do together in the evenings. He has decided mine is best so I just let him use it. That leaves me with the Martin. But now, I'm going to go to my backup backup custom shallow body Ovation. I bought it from my uncle used because it was pretty. It lives mostly in its case because it's shallow body and doesn't have a lot of volume but it's got a low action and with light strings it's fun. Good excuse to use it.

I havnt told him I started ln a warped piece of crap garage sale guitar with WOOD frets. I wore them out playing with Alan Jackson back in the day and tore my fingers up before finally getting a strat and a decent acoustic. But that's fine, maybe if he starts ahead of the game he won't develop the bad habits I did and stall out. lol.

For what it's worth, luthiers rarely charge enough for their work.

My oldest son has been playing cello since he was 6 (he's 18 now) and we rented until he was ready for a full size cello. As soon as we bought, we've had to have repairs in Dallas, Omaha, Maryland, Colorado and Seattle. All minor but being a teen or pre-teen they have rarely charged more than $50-$100. Granted all were minor repairs primarily from traveling from the dry Texas panhandle to much more humid climates. Or bridge slipping or such.

Our luthier in Amarillo (where we purchased the cello) is outstanding. Kruno is in the Amarillo symphony and takes care of all of their instruments as well.

Good luck with the repair. Any decent luthier will be able to repair. And now you have to create a crazy story for how the crack happened.

My son and I were just trying to chill and relax and I noticed this on my headstock. Uhm…never been down this road. Just noticed this tonight. Things never been dropped or knocked over, but of course there is no way for me to be 100% sure but suffice it to say I'm not aware and no one in the family is and I'm very careful.

So….uh….where on earth would I find someone to fix this. Normally, I'd just wedge this dude open and squish some glue in there but I think maybe someone else would be better suited for this task. This was bought in the late 90's, brand new.

Full disclosure, I don't need Willie's luthier here and I'm concerned the repair will exceed the value of the guitar.

Anyway, kinda bummed and shocked because I don't know what the hell would cause it. It's across the grain it seems?

Anyway, you guys know stuff so….thoughts ?

I don't know if it's cracked all the way where it's "loose" f I remove the strings. If so, then I don't see much else to be needed except a clamp and some Titebond. Right?

I can tell you back in the day, Chris Wall owned Jerry Jeff's Wheatstock Martin (probably a nice D35). His girlfriend tripped on it one night and snapped the neck clean off. It was repaired to the point you couldn't tell it was repaired. Bring it to a luthier. They can fix it. Yours isn't as bad as Chris' was.

And I own a DR. Mine is worth enough to me that I would repair mine. Value be damned.
