I try to stay out of politics, especially on this board so I will keep this a direct as I can.

There is a vote likely to happen today in the senate that if passed will allow a Chilean mining company to being sulfite mining just outside and upstream of the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area. This company is currently paying remediation and is in court with other countries because every one of their mines has leeched sulfites into the watershed down stream. This sulfite mine would destroy at least some portion of the wilderness area and likely damage a majority of it. This isn't hyperbole or political rhetoric, it's looking at this companies track record and applying it.

The copper ore from this mine will be sent to China for refinement and sale to a Chinese company to use. None of this helps the USA or our companies. This makes no sense from any way you look at it.

Please contact your senator today and tell them to at least not vote if they can't bring themselves to vote against it.

What may be the most frustrating part of this story ( and in a north slope mining project that got blocked) is these mining companies are always foreign , mine the US minerals and then send them back overseas for refining. They put on a great environmental story / plan to get the permits and then fail to manage their process safely. Thanks for the heads up - the boundary waters are unique and amazing wilderness that should always be protected

Related/unrelated, but I have a contact with a new technology that is essentially a far more accurate land radar. Would cut back on digging/mining, likely by quite a bit to where half the digging would be the new norm thanks to its accuracy.

If this can help in any way, let me know.

Looks like it passed - ie mining ban is overturned. I did read there are still many site hurdles that have to be cleared before manning could actually be started

Yes, the Republicans decided to make China great and screw over US citizens by selling out natural resources over seas with no promises of any return.

Even if you don't care about the boundary waters this is outright theft of US minerals with no return to the US tax payer.

It takes more than just republicans to get this passed. Sounds like more republicans opposed it than democrats.

I'm not sure where you got that information.
The vote was 50 to 49. 50 republicans supporting and 47 democrats and 2 republicans against.
The senate is controlled by the republicans so this doesn't even get through committee without republican support and then the republican majority leader has to further support it and allow it to go to the floor for a vote.

edit to add the house votes, it was a straight party line vote with only 1 democrat supporting and 1 republican against.

This is also what I'm worried about. The pendulum is already swinging back and when the democrats take control the response will be even more dramatic and things like science based environmental decisions will be replaced with what we are seeing in Colorado and Oregon.

It feels like they are all in bed together, damned if we do and damned if we don't at this point.

I was specifically speaking about the people who (R) currently in control. You know, the ones who think the NIH is wrong.
