Three green wings, a gadwall and a scaup. Actually encouraged by the weather. This is Jack County.

A fellow Aggie did an Arkansas hunt this weekend and reported thousands of ducks. Everyone limited.

Guided a 3 man blue wing shoot this morning in Matagorda County. Crazy how long we are having to rest our marsh to setup a simple shoot compared to years past. Saw 2 mottles and 2 blue bills, only non BWT this am.

KWB and Fightin, what's the lake level, if you don't mind? Last year was bad due to low lake level, any better this year? I haven't been out yet.

Thanks for the update. I took my boat out before the season started, and of course the lake level was fine, but that was a few months ago.

1st 2 are from Tuesday AM 1st duck hunt of the year. We definitely should have had more birds. (Thats where my shotgun extractor broke)

I am planning to drive over an hour from Houston to go duck hunting on Sunday morning. Is this a bad idea if the forecast holds? I have a 4x4 truck if that's any help and I'm not trailering anything. Do I put it in 4x4 high and drive on the highway ? I'm unfamiliar with this.

1. Done it before and understand why
2. Plan on it taking you 2-3 x longer as you'll no doubt be driving much slower than normal
3. Stay smart and you should be okay
4. Maybe find a hotel much closer and stay there Saturday night?

No worries that far south. I drove 3 hours in the giant snow storm in a 2wd truck last year we set on the wrong pond could have killed 6-10 only ended with 3.

I am in the same boat from Katy to probably around Blessing and am in wait and see mode for Sunday. Leaning towards not going because I don't want to total my truck or worse to shoot another 6 ducks but we'll see…

I'm supposed to be headed to Seymor tomorrow for an annual buddy hunt. Outfitter still says game on and doesn't seem concerned in the slightest. I don't think we can get our $$ back from the airB&B but I'm more concerned about not being able to get back Sunday if this gets as bad as some of the models.

Future cast I just saw showed less than 0.02 inches of precipitation for Houston overnight Saturday and Sunday morning.

Of course duck season is ending right as we get the coldest temps of the season along with snow & ice.

Would be curious to know if those that haven't had many ducks all year will have them next week with these cold blasts.

Same here! My 12 year old son is obsessed with getting his first mallard. Unfortunately we don't see them where we hunt. He gets on Texags and checks this thread daily and he will definitely be jealous of all those mallards in that pic lol

I've been duck hunting pretty aggressively since 2013 and have seen exactly one green head in all of those years down here. I don't think I've seen more than 4-6 shot as a club in a year out of several thousand ducks.

My daughter just turned 10 last weekend and we went out on her birthday. She has been with me before but this is the first time for her to bring a gun and our goal was for her to shoot her first duck. Up to this point she has mostly just been dove hunting with a bolt action 410. I actually cut down the stock on an old youth 870 I have and it fit her pretty well.

She was able to get a mallard hen on the water at first light. The 3 inch 20 gauge duck shot was a lot more recoil than anything she had shot before and ended up on her butt but thought it was awesome. She had one other opportunity on some ducks landing early but they got up quick. Ended up with 5 total and could have had plenty more if I was not trying to get everything on the water to get her a shot. She loved it which was the goal.

It's probably been covered before but is your hound a wire-haired pointing gryphon? I've got a buddy who's got 2 of them and they're great dogs. I've been told that if you're buying from a reputable breeder they've got a pretty strict vetting process to ensure they'll hunt frequently.

We hunted a pond on public land this year and saw a pair of mallards. We had just packed all of our gear up and was just about to start the mile walk back to the truck and a pair landed. Nothing we could do, guns were already unloaded and put in the case. We watched them fly off. My son was so mad and broken hearted.
