I've cut back a bunch of yaupon down to the ground and need to put something on it to try and keep it from growing back. Can anyone tell me what pesticide mix I should use on them? In College Station for what it's worth. Thanks!

Remedy + Diesel is what I use for Yaupon. I'll basal spray them and let it sit for 6 months - year and let the plant fully die and then remove it. I'm doing acres and acres of the stuff, but it's effective. I would imagine that you could spray the cut stumps with it and it would also be effective.

Can you share the ratio you use? And also would it be okay to cover in mulch right after spraying?

Grazon PD. Straight chemical painted on the cut stump or lightly sprayed on the cut stump. It's the one way ive found to work 100 percent of the time.

Needs to be done soon after cutting.

But you need a certified applicator's license for it. You don't need one for Remedy, and it's a lot cheaper if you do the 75% diesel/25% Remedy mix.

Yeah, plenty of things are cheaper. I've probably used them all over the years.
You're correct about the applicator liscense but a jug of it will treat many cut stumps if used correctly.

Careful...

Remedy will kill oak trees as well, so don't spray that all over the foliage or near oak tree roots.

(Not necessarily telling the person I replied to, but PSA for everyone)

I have been using remedy / diesel mix and it works great but have avoided it under the big trees.

Can you sprays stumps and tiny pop ups under oaks or don't spray at all.

You can, you just have to be careful. But you didn't hear that from me because it isn't labeled for it. Painting it on the stump is better because you don't have overspray.

Depending on where you live it can be a good source of protein for deer, especially during the winter months. In some parts of Texas it can be considered a prefered browse for deer, but in other parts it would a secondary food source except in winter months. The berries are also liked by turkey and other birds.
If you live in the country and have deer you may not want to kill all of it.

Paint Tordon RTU on the fresh cut stump. Use sparingly, it is mobile through soil. Available on Amazon.

I have used pastureguard during the growing season and have had success with killing yaupon. You can buy it at Producers and a license is not required.

Cut stump with Remedy-Diesel mix is pretty deadly on about anything. It doesn't take much on that small youpon stump, but it must be a fresh cut.

Since the stumps aren't freshly cut, you can take a drill and make a well in the stump and pour straight Remedy into the well.

Next time, if you do basal spray, add a little marker dye to the mix to know what you have already treated.

I've read yaupon leaves make a good tea .... i have so many acres of it I've always thought it would be entertaining to bag it up and sell it to the hipsters

Ilex vomitoria is the scientific name, if that's an indication

Yaupon is the only naturally caffeinated plant species that grows in the US and most of North America.

A brewed cup of yaupon tea typically contains around 40-60mg of caffeine. This is less than a cup of coffee, which averages around 95mg, but similar to the amount found in a cup of green or black tea.

Yaupon also contains theobromine and theophylline, which may contribute to a smoother, more sustained energy boost compared to coffee.

Maybe untapped market here...

Yaupon tea is fine to consume; it just has to be from the Yaupon Holly bush. The vomitoria name is likely a "lost in translation" thing that happened when it was named. Hell, you can buy Yaupon leaves for tea on Amazon.

I think we live in the same neighborhood and if that is the case, you probably have post oaks nearby. Post oaks do not like whatever you use to kill yaupon.

Remedy is not very soil active (breaks down pretty quickly), and the teaspoon of two of the mix on a cut stump should not present any issues. Tordon, on the other hand……

Yeah, but any overspray onto the roots or trunk of a post oak is bad.
They are touchy and sensitive trees.

I think the berries are an emetic, that may be where the vomitoria name comes from.

I'll tell ya this - I've got acres I am fighting yaupon and cedar on. I'll grab a backpack sprayer and go to town basal spraying. I'm not ... careful. Stuff around oaks I just hit it all. I've never lost an oak. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, it surely does. I'm just saying that it hasn't happened to me and I've used gallons of the stuff over the years

To add a tip, when I'm doing cut stump treatment, I just carry around one of those brown peroxide spray bottles filled with triclopyr. Makes application easy, and it hangs on my belt or pocket.

Gunny:
I agree with you on a lot of things but not this one. In the spring if there is nothing else to eat and deer feed on the new growth, it might be considered as roughage but that would be it.
We had a kid shoot a nice 10 pt a few years back that had the end of its muzzle shot off a couple of months earlier, having healed already. It had no incisors left. That deer had chomped down on yaupon branches and pulled its head sideways to strip them off. I recognized the buck but he was close to 30 lbs lighter than my Sept. pics. Almost emaciated. When I looked into his gut, it was full of yaupon leaves.
I have posters from TPWD dating back to the 80s and it is always listed as essentially non-nutritious, never preferred. Kill it! Kill it all!

I was reading up on this a while back. I still plan on harvesting and brewing some yaupon tea. Will report back.

Do you know how far a 2 Qt hand sprayer full of that mix will go? Youre talking about hand labor from the get go, and accuracy is simple.
