A few years ago we were coming home from Zambia for a few months to speak at churches. Wadd96, God bless his soul, gave a a list of joints to visit and they were all good. That said, we really like 2M in San Antonio.

The fact that there is a good BBQ joint in Harker freakin' Heights blows my mind. Guess I'll check it out on a day off.

2M is solid. Their Mexican flare on the sides is great - especially the street corn casserole.

Didn't make to the Burnt Bean yet but hope to soon. Houston area favorites:

Truth
Corkscrew
Pinkerton's
Tejas (haven't been their in 5 years or so)

I haven't been to the Killens original location but was not impressed with the Woodlands location.

If youre talking straight brisket, Tejas is hard to beat.

Stiles Switch is Aggie-owned, and hard to beat for a solid meal and good atmosphere. They also move the line quick.

Miller's is quite possible the best pork rib I've ever paid for.

I can only give the Texas Monthly list so much credit. I went to some place in Fredericksburg 10+ years ago that was on their list and it was trash. The beans were the only thing that was decent.

If you're ever in Sandpoint, Idaho and need to get a bbq fix, Smokesmith is the best bbq I've had north of DFW.

The Killen's in Pearland is damn good.

I'll second. 2M and Killens (pearland) are both very delicious.

I went to Leroy and Lewis in the winter and it was very good but surprised it made #2 bc I don't think it's as good as Snows or Franklins.

I ate there last weekend on my way to family reunion in Camp Wood. I thought it was pretty good

It's all political how they rank things, in my opinion. They weight newer places way more than the old tried and true ones and I wouldn't be surprised if some of these places paid a pretty penny under the table for them to do so.

I office one block from Burnt Bean in Downtown Seguin. Still haven't been because of the line, that is now even longer than before. An employee went on his day off. He said that he started the line at 5am and soon had people behind him. Average wait is 4-5 hours.

I met my cousin there two weeks ago. He got there at 10 and we had our food by 11:20. Both he and I ranked their meats as
1. The burger
2. The pork steak
3. Sausage
4. Ribs
5. Brisket

I have eaten A LOT of bbq off their lists and imho that place shouldn't even be in the top 10.

Anyone know of a decent BBQ place in or nearby El Paso? We are there fairly regularly and usually just eat at Ft. Bliss, but I'm willing to go off our beaten track a ways for some good brisket.

Living in AZ has a lot of upside (for us, anyway), but good BBQ isn't one of them. Or good seafood, for that matter....

There's rolling smoke BBQ in Anthony, TX. 15 minutes north of EP. In EP there is desert smoke bbq, hallelujah bbq, & Tony's bbq.

When I used to spend a ton of time in El Paso 15 years ago we always went to Stateline BBQ near the Sunland Racetrack in NW El Paso. It is the same as county line that was around the Texas Metro areas. The one near Tomball/Spring has closed. There is also a County line in ABQ.

Then Rudy's opened and my clients were thrilled and loved the place. IMO you can't beat Rudys for basic BBQ.

There appears to be a ton of "craft" BBQ places around these days.

Little Miss on University south of Sky Harbor is an oasis in the desert.

Persons on this thread already mentioned it's just an advertisement for new places.

In Houston in no order the best are Truth, Feges, and Pit Room. Disclosed I have a small investment in Feges, but as it is explained Texas Monthly pops in, if you are having an off day you are toast. BBQ places have off days, get off cuts of meat, etc. and then you are toast.

I didn't read the entire write up but for example I think they said Feges is in a office complex, but 3-4 years ago now they build a stand alone in Houston and it's fantastic. Their burger is top 5 in the city. And Feges has free Veteran's meals on Friday for lunch - ownership is top notch and associated with A&M via yours truly.

But those are my top 3 and I didn't see Pit Room on the top 5 list either which is laughable, those boys rock.

Here is the next 50 in no order. I feel like Blood Brothers were the ones that really started some of the fusion BBQ. Especially with their ribs, banh mi, and brisket fried rice. A few years ago they were top 10,were selected for a spot in Vegas, and the pit master is a James Beard finalists.

Blood Bros today. Good stuff. I thought it was much better than brisket and rice

Had Rosslers tonight. Eaten it several times before but thought this thread would appreciate a pic.

Raspberry Pork Belly Burnt ends, Turkey, Brisket and Pork Ribs.
Cucumber Pepper Salad, Elote Pasta Salad, Cheesy Poblano Grits and Borracho Beans for the sides.

The burnt ends and the poblano grits were my favorite.

They've made a brisket ramen in the past thats also really good.

I'm pretty sure both Woodlands Killen's Steakhouse and Woodlands Killen's BBQ are gone.

TM simply monetized it. Texans have loved and argued over bbq for longer than that Austin screwball of a magazine has been around.

Went by JWs in Jacksonville (recent addition to the TM50) a few days back as I was passing through.

Very non assuming place but meats were really solid. Ended up talking to the owner/pitmaster for 10-15min and he was a great guy. Give them a try if you you somehow find yourself in the area.

Good to know. I'm in the Tyler/Jacksonville area about once every couple of months. I haven't been to any of the TM places other than Snow's a few times.

Yes, since it's Texas Monthly, everything has to be quirky just for the sake of being quirky. A lot of stuff like "miso-infused" and "kombucha-glazed" seem to make them giddy. I'm an originalist though.

Juan Lee speaks the truth. Apparently, to get on the list in Lockhart now you have to serve green spaghetti.

Or good mexican food.

Really great pizza town though, and when you do find a mexican joint that is good it is typically really, really good.

Is TexAZ grill still going strong?

When I lived there back in 2003-2004, Stateline was the only halfway decent place (pretty sure it was Stateline - same area you are talking about).

EP is just not a good food town in any real capacity. There was a solid steakhouse on 10 going north towards NM just north of the Vinton exit - Great American Steakhouse. That place was good.

Not mentioning Corkscrew or Killens or even Pinkertons is kinda....well, it is what it is I suppose.

And most places do really well at one aspect or another, few are great at everything across the board IMO.
