Giraffes have the highest blood pressure in the animal kingdom, followed closely by my wife when I tell her I just bought 50 goats.

Vultures urinate on their legs and feet to cool off on hot days, a process called urohydrosis. Their urine also helps kill any bacteria or parasites they've picked up from walking through carcasses or perching on dead animals.

Mosquitoes kill more people every year than all other animals COMBINED

Isn't it the pathogen they carry that kills people, and not actually the mosquito?

How does a gemsbok survive 113F desert heat without frying its brain?

It's got a built-in aircon system.

As this desert antelope breathes through its nose, cool air drops the temp of the blood in the veins across its face. That cool blood then wraps around the hot blood headed to the brain like a cold towel over a hot pipe. By the time the blood reaches the brain, it's cooled down enough to keep it safe.

Without this trick, its brain would literally cook at over 104F.

God didn't just give it a strong body- He gave it a smart one, too.

As was stated in another post above.. that is not just a specific trait of Gemsbok. All the Oryx genus has the same cooling blood vessel mechanisms/anatomy around their heads/brains. Addax, although a different genus than Oryx, also has that adaptation.
In fact many African plains animals in the Bovidae family have that extra blood cooling vessel anatomical design.
Gods creation is full of wonders for sure.

"The Lions Den" - contrary to common belief, lions do not live in dens. They live in the brush, tree thickets, grasslands, and the natural environment

Also not all male adult lions have manes, there are environmental factors such as nutrition in a region and temperatures along with genetic factors which lead some adult male lions not to have a mane

Cats can do this too.

Recently learned that ticks can live up to two years without feeding.

Learned to my dismay after one of the kids got one in the car that we had taken camping. I assumed any others would die quickly.

Good post. You are correct. Multiple paternity surely happens with whitetail does. Spurs all kinds of questions when you think about it.

I learned a unique tick fact from our knowledgeable resident TA entomologist 87Flyfisher that ticks locate and are attracted to us and animals by the C02 we exhale. That's how they home in on us. I thought that was downright amazing! Damn little creatures.
