Talk about things you miss - a cheap getaway weekend to the coast!

Family of 4
AirB&B $1,000
Golf cart $300
Fishing guide $900
nice meal $200 a pop
Ice cream for kids $50 a pop

Getting to the point where you have to plan and budget for a weekend fishing trip.

Nothings cheap anymore.

But I remind myself that coastal home ownership + boat ownership is VERY expensive.

1. Camp in a tent.
2. Take your own food and cook on a barbecue grill. It doesn't have to be complicated. Hotdog, hamburgers, breakfast burritos, etc.
3. Fish, crab, etc.

It doesn't have to be super expensive. We had more fun waking up at 3 AM in the morning to go crabbing before church, or spending the weekend camping out when I was a kid.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Don't hire a guide.
Don't rent a cart.
Get ice cream from HEB.

You weren't doing all that for cheap back in the day either.

You got legs, who needs cart?

Fishing without the guide is cheap.

Cook your own dinners in the kitchen you're paying for.

Grocery store ice cream is cheap.

Exactly. Don't go out fishing with a guide, instead go crabbing, fishing off a pier or jetties, get a lantern and walk the shallow water even if you are not gigging flounder just to see what is there, small seine and/or a cast net are basically free activities.

While I get what the OP is saying, there are a lot of ways to still get to go have fun and it not break the bank.

When I was a kids we stayed at some craptastix motels in port A. Fishing off the pier, bluebell ice cream, burgers and hot dogs over charcoal. Bread for the seagulls, crabbing, fishing.

These were also the days when you didn't fly a flag on your truck to announce your political team or play your music at 180db and try to fight those who tell you to turn it down.

My issue is…the OP agenda should be accessible to the middle class family. It no longer is. This is only one of many many examples.

You should get a boat and then you'll really know how expensive a fishing trip costs

I'm still trying to figure out where OP is paying over $10 a person for ice cream.

I have no idea on what the middle class is entitled to or not, but at what income level is middle class to you?

I always cook at the airBnB. Unless there's some place special, I can cook better than they can. I'll get fish from the local market and such

This - fish from the surf or wade fish out into the bay, golf carts are not needed, ice cream from the store, stay in a cheaper hotel - can do it all for $1200 or less if not going craxy on stuff or spend $3500 to $5000 if you do all the fancy stuff

HEB ice cream is $6.50 per 1/2 gallon

$10 per person??

He said family of four. Then he said ice cream for the kids. Then he said $50 a pop.

So he is paying $100 and getting no ice cream for himself

In a tent, in coastal Texas, in the summer time? F that!

Well, I grew up in coastal Texas for the first 20 years of my life with no air conditioning, so we were used to it. We played outdoors all summer anytime of the day. I also had to roof with my dad, so I was used to hot temperatures.

It's funny here in East Tennessee when the temperatures get in the 90s, and people freak out. I start laughing.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

I'm not sure there is much of a middle class anymore. When I think traditional middle class, it should be an average salaried job where one parent can provide for a family of 4. But that has eroded away for decades now

How long are you staying? I have a nice house in Rockport that's probably cheaper than where you're staying. It's got a community pool and close to boat ramps and some good restaurants.

Most guides for 5 hour trip started around $800

You think it's expensive at the Texas coast, try the Gulf Shores, AL area. We got here Saturday for a week. Everything is more expensive here than in the DFW area where we live.
Fishing trips are sky high. High enough the guide gave me a $200 veteran discount and it's still higher than any trip I've ever paid for in on the Texas gulf coast.
Cheaper than a boat though.

My mom used to have a hedge against overly expensive entertainment, like the movies. Here's a representative picture of my mom in 1985 preparing for a trip to the theatre with us kids in tow.

Seriously. $100?!

Reminds me of a great line…That's milk and ice cream? It ain't got no bourbon in it or nothing?

Spent last week in Destin, stopped at whatever tourist trap shop on the Harbor Walk to get ice cream for me and the girls. 3 milkshakes was right at $40 after tax.

Granted, they were pretty damned good though. Even used Blue Bell.

The good old days when things were cheap in your mind are gone. Even fast food is $10-$15 per meal these days. It is what it is, progress and all that jazz.

We camped in a tent when I was a kid. Malaquite beach was our favorite. My dad wouldn't buy us frozen shrimp for bait. My brothers and I would walk down the beach and find a dead fish for cut bait to get started. Ice cream or dinner at a restaurant? Haha. We were mad when we had to go home.
rebelag62

My thoughts exactly. Tent camping in the summer is a no go. Absolute, pure misery. I grew up on the coast, and I don't care what anyone says you don't get use to it.
