From TexAgs Sponsor Classic Collision and Restoration:

Even though an auto restoration goes through hundreds of steps, here's a very quick overview of the process.

What is a rotisserie for a car? Well, when you start with a hunk of metal parts, you need a way to build those parts into a classic automobile. Hence the rotisserie…

Before
The first step after disassembly is stripping the body to bare metal, sealing the bare metal with epoxy primer, and doing any needed metalwork. This means cutting, grinding, welding, etc. to remove rust, repair damaged panels, making perfect door/fender/hood gaps, etc. This step can involve many hours of work if you start with a body that's not so good.

After
After the metalwork is done and all of the panels fit together correctly, sometimes hundreds of hours are spent on bodywork block sanding, priming, and using body filler to make every part of the exterior straight. Lot of times we prime and block sand the exterior three or more times to get every wave or imperfection out. We spend many hours in the jambs, engine compartment, and interior metal surfaces doing the same thing.

The next step is exciting because we finally get to see some shiny paint! We paint all of the jambs and interior metal parts, final sand the undercarriage and paint or undercoat as needed. Then we install the drivetrain and suspension, and reassemble the major body panels to get ready for final block sanding, body prep, and paint.

For final sanding, we start with 320 grit sandpaper and block sand the complete exterior. Then we do it again with 400 grit and 600 grit to get the primer smooth and ready for paint. We clean the car good and then mask it up and paint the exterior! After three coats of sealer, three or more coats of color, and then three coats of polyurethane clear, we sand the exterior again with 1500 grit, 2000 grit, 3000 grit, and then buff and polish the clear to a show quality finish.

Once that is all done, we can start reassembly. Lights, trim, chrome, bumpers, wiring, glass, A/C, fuel injection, fuel system, cooling system, insulation, carpet, headliner, interior, exhaust system, and everything else gets installed so we have a car that we can start and drive! This step can be hundreds of hours too, but is the most satisfying part.

My wife and I love to enter our classics in car shows around Texas. In the Fall, we always head to Luckenbach for the Lucky Rod Fest car show. Every Spring we support our local classic car club, the Bluebonnet Street Rodders at their annual charity car competition in Bryan.

That mustang is beautiful. We had a 65 fastback that we had redone. Kept it for a while.

I did a frame off in my driveway on a 1964 Chevy C10 Fleetside about 30 years ago. Installed a TH 350 transmission. I rebuilt the engine out of a 77 that I wrecked. Added some upgrades to get about 350 horsepower. Swapped in a front disc brake crossmember from an 85 model, tilt wheel with column shift. Built a temporary paint booth in my driveway and sprayed it turquoise with white Z28 stripes. I drove it daily for several years and sold it off. Picture below is the only one I have on my phone.

A little while after that I got the bug for a Gen 2 Camaro. After some looking I found a deal on a 1972 SS 350. It was a driver but had some rust issues. I told myself when I got money and time I was going to do another frame off with it but it never worked out. I ended up giving it to my son and he sold it a year or so later. Sorry no pics.

Now I've been retired about 8 years and that Gen 2 Camaro bug never quite disappeared. I started looking for projects and I still might get one. I came across a freshly restored 1973 Type LT/RS/Z28 and just had to have it.

So as far as the answer to your question "what would I restore" I'm looking pretty hard at 67-68 Ford F-100 pickups.

Cheers

One of these days I want to restore one of these. My son's prom date had borrowed this one for them to take to prom.

It was the coolest little car I've been around in a long time.

I've got to get the boy in this picture and his younger brother off the feed bill first. Teenagers eat ALL THE TIME.

I don't want to slander, but I've always gotten a bad feeling about a few of the "Classic Car Marketplace" stores, Gateway being one of them.

watch BaT auctions for C3 vettes here: https://bringatrailer.com/chevrolet/c3-corvette/

Also look on EBay. I found a Trans Am (as pictured above) there, but the auction expired and I made a deal with the dealer directly. Assuming mechanic check comes back clean, I'll be following Rule 1 here soon...

I know what you mean. A lot of those sites seem to highly overvalue the "asking price." You see $15-25K cars listed anywhere from $50-150K. It's wild.

I bought my Z28 from PC Classic Cars in Sherman. It was exactly as described, actually better. I would definitely recommend them and would buy from them again. The '72 SS 350 I mentioned above I bought on eBay. We are a few months out but wifey is wanting a 71-73 Fastback Mustang either black or white if anyone has a line on one... Mach 1 preferred obviously.

A couple years ago a friend of mine had a 1970 Boss 429 in Grabber Blue. He only had it a month or so before someone offered him stupid money for it. I think it shipped to Sweden.

1967 was such a good year for GM styling. The new body styles for the Corvette, Camaro, Chevelle, Chevy ll's, and trucks were (and still are) some of the best looking stuff to ever come out.

Don't forget the GTO... 67 is the best looking year in my opinion.

There are many I could choose but probably a '70 Cuda. I would settle for a '70 Barricuda since that was my first car. Spring of '73 ending Junior year in HS. One owner trade in at Buick dealer in Houston. 35k miles, 318, a/c, auto, and am/fm radio!
$1500 back in those days.
Gunny456

Yes sir. Had a 67 GTO in HS for a year.
I like 70 GTO's. Heck I like all year model GTO's…..and Firebirds…..and Trans Am's.

I always wanted a 70 Trans Am. So the one you may get…. does it have the 400 Ram Air III
or 400 Ram Air IV? (The holy grail).
You could see the end of the high HP race coming to an end as Pontiac had to forego the 1970 400 ci in RA III and RA IV engines in Trans Am's and only offered 455's in 1971- 1972 to keep the horsepower up….after that it all went downhill…..big C.I.'s like the SD455 but low HP.

That is fantastic. Looked at buying an olds 442, chevelle, or GTO as a resto project for a while. Was close on a 442. Bought a boat instead!

I got my license in 75. I went looking for car and wanted a 1st gen Camaro like everyone else. They were out of my budget, at least the SSs and Z28s were. I looked at four cars pretty hard: a 67 GTO for $495, passed because I did not like the color (smashes head against the wall). A 1968 Charger for $795, passed because of crappy repaint. A 1969 Cougar with a 390 and a 4 speed, it was stretching my budget thin at $995. Settled on a 1969 Javelin SST with a Go pack in Big Bad Blue for $750.... God I miss that car. Not Mine

I've got a buddy that has a unique outlook on restorations- he says -it all depends on what you start with - you can spend a bunch of money on a ford or a Chevy and you end up up with a 50-60k Chevy - but if you Start with a Rolls you can really pull up to Sonic in style

Back in the early 90's, I nearly bought a gold 67 Riviera for $1800. It ran pretty good and I regret not buying it. So, I'm partial to something like this as it's not popular.

My dream car to own would be a '59 Cadillac but if I had any skill sets for restoring (which I unfortunately do no or the capital lol) but I would love to restore any and all 68-72 Ford and Chevy pickups. Love em. And not all the low rider chopped garbage but back to near original look.

Gunny, It will not be happening. Had a mechanic check it out, and he found too many headscratchers on it to mess with.

It wasn't a true T/A, but a "Tribute" (i.e. base firebird with added T/A parts/paint/decals to look like one). The shaker said "455 H.O." on it, but the engine under the hood was a 400 without Ram Air heads.

I'm still watching for a Firebird I can do similar with. Whatever engine I get, I will modify it with at least a Ram Air cam, even if I can't get the heads.

Damn. Sorry it didn't work out for you. When you find the right one it will all fall into place. Don't give up in looking.
I know a guy who has an honest 72 TA. It's an older restoration but was done right. He babies the car and takes it to shows in an enclosed trailer. It has the original 455HO, 4 speed. It was a car that came from Arizona.
Only has 5600 miles on it since restoration.
He is 82 and still pretty spry. If he decides to sell it I'll page you on here or something.
