I'm not a hunter, but farming and owning land in the country have taught me that the vast majority of people have no idea how to act in the country. I wouldn't have to deal with greyhound idiots, road hunters, target shooters, mudders, trash dumpers, dog dumpers, etc. if they did.

Sure, it would be great if a list of rules wasn't needed, and an owner didn't have to insult the intelligence of good people.

But it only takes one idiot to ruin it for all. I'm good with a clear set of rules. Don't like that the landowner lays out guidelines for the Very Expensive land he owns? You will not be missed

What is a greyhound idiot? Never heard that term before. Hope they don't use it a bunch after I leave the lease!

Ain't nothing wrong with your list man. And I suppose in a LOT of places something like that is necessary.

For some people things like 'don't leave a log on a road' is about as obvious as telling an Alaskan not to eat yellow snow. It's just doesn't need to be said. But with a lot of people it probably does.

It's not big deal. And yes, we are geniuses. I appreciate you recognizing that.

Growing up my dad had simple rules for us:

Rules #1 through 10 are safety, safety, safety.

Rule #11 don't tell mom.

Greyhound owners who use them to chase coyotes. They think you're going to be wildly grateful to them for killing coyotes, even if you're like me and value coyotes for rodent control.

So grateful, in fact, that you will not care that they drove across and compacted your plowed ground, trespassed and drove through a fence.

Yes, that happened on my farm. Mudders are the stupid kids with lifted trucks who intentionally slop through bar ditches after a rain

Well this has turned into good ol outdoors board squabble haha

I was meaning more along the lines of pick up all of your shells/casings, repaint the gongs when youre done shooting, dont have a campfire if the wind will blow your beer can and the grass isn't green, call 123-456-7899 if you find a gas pipeline leak, leave it better than you found it etc etc

Sounds Exactly like SE Tx hog doggers. Different world but exact issues and mindset.

I was not aware this was a thing. I thought it was going to be a play on unwanted people shipped off on the greyhound bus!
The coyote hunting actually sounds interesting. And it does sound like the se texas hog dog idiots.

More common sense stuff here.

Greyhounds are fascinating and they move beautifully, they are a sight to see.

Using them to kill coyotes just seems cruel.

If they were killing them on their own land or where permitted, that's one thing. They have no right to make management decisions for me.

The same guys had been busted earlier for shooting across property lines and over a house where a party was going on.

Yea when I saw that list it is exactly what I thought. That type of list would only be necessary if you hunt with lots city folks.

These types of comments are just dumb.

I've met just as many country folk that I wouldn't trust with a BB gun as I have city folk. Probably more.

Ok there city boy.
Yeah, you got me! Major burn!

I'll go run for city council now or something.

Well geniuses, the OP asked for what rules do you have on your ranch because of this reason:
Quote:

it seems like somebody brings a cousin or a friend and suddenly some people revert to being feral male toddlers if they dont have something/somebody to remind them of how to behave

This isn't a list we have printed out, but it's kind of a SOP ingrained in us all: Be safe, Take care of the place and animals, help each other out, and if things go south know who to call and how to tell them to get here.

I'm curious what rules you think are too difficult to follow or silly. All of it looks like normal stuff to me.

Quote:

1. Leave gates in the manner you find them. They are open or shut for a reason.
2. Don't give gate combinations to anyone
3. Pick up any trash you see, no exceptions.
4. Report anything damaged: fences, gates, water troughs, etc.
5. You see a log in the road, you move it completely out of the way. Don't drive around it.
6. Don't drive around in the mud and rut up the roads.
7. No neck/head shots on deer.
8. Figure out where you're going to sit the night before. Everyone knows where everyone is.
9. Figure out how to drive to stands to avoid disturbing anyone.
10. Agree on when to go to the stand & when to leave. (as other have said)
11. Somebody wounds a deer, everyone helps to look for it.
12. No alcohol in the stand or driving around. Camp only after hunting is over. No dumbassery.
13. Everyone knows where the first aid kit, fire extinguisher and emergency numbers.
14. Everyone knows the address, GPS coordinates, etc. of the place for emergency responders.
15. Everyone cleans up every time. No mess is left and no shirking.
16. Bring your own food, coffee, booze, etc. Don't eat others food without asking.
17. Guests must be agreed upon and vetted
18. Everyone signs a hold harmless agreement
19. No dogs running around
20. Some sort of agreement on shooting hogs, coyotes, coons, foxes, bobcats, etc. What is policy?
21. Everyone learns to age deer, and adheres to the standards of harvest agreed upon.
22. What is the policy on "claiming" a deer? ie: Bubba's been hunting that drop tine buck all season. Skeeter is out for the first time all year in January and kills "Bubba's drop tine buck". Bubba now hates Skeeter and camp tranquility is ruined. Get this mess sorted out and stick to it.
Everything in bold is silly and overbearing IMO. Just my opinion though.

#1-#6 are just normal common sense things to me, not really rules per se. #8, #9 and #10 are good rules, especially if you don't have permanent areas for members on #8. #21 is the hardest to enforce because people are people and you simply can't change that fact. There is always one that is a brown and down type, and one or two that think everything should go another year.

Here is why I included those rules, obviously they will vary from place to place depending upon the size of the place, # of people and other factors.

7. No neck/head shots on deer.
Seen 3 wannabe snipers blow the jaw off does during my 40+ years of hunting. Not on our place.

12. No alcohol in the stand or driving around. Camp only after hunting is over. No dumbassery.
The higher the # of people and the less they are known to everyone the more important this becomes.

17. Guests must be agreed upon and vetted
Don't keep bringing the jackass who gets hammered, doesn't help with anything, can't shoot & is an *******. No one should have free reign to keep bringing that guy (unless you are the OWNER of the ranch)

18. Everyone signs a hold harmless agreement
Trust me, you don't want a "friend" that got invited to the ranch to get himself hurt & file a lawsuit. This is good policy & most leases owners will have this policy if they are smart.

19. No dogs running around
This really would depend upon the dogs & ranch set up, but having dogs going loose & chasing deer or cattle isn't cool.

20. Some sort of agreement on shooting hogs, coyotes, coons, foxes, bobcats, etc. What is policy?
Not everyone shoots predators indiscriminately & if I was a guest on a place I would want to know.

I have friends that still hold grudges from 20 years ago about a person "B" who shot person "A's" buck he had passed on for 3 years letting it mature. If someone is hunting a particular buck, is there a gentleman's agreement for someone else not to shoot it? Or is it fair game & thanks for letting me know the buck is in the area? IMO everyone should play by the same rules to avoid pissing people off.

I'm thinking of keeping it simple with "a ranch only gives what it gets." And "leave it better than you found it"

Maybe adding address of county dump, numbers for sheriff, game warden etc
