Do any of yall carry your weapon on the boat? Not talking about duck hunting. I am concerned about the salty water and don't want to do a deep clean every fishing trip.

I carry S&W 342pd on the boat in my daily operations of my saltwater guide service .... corrosion is no concern.

Sorry for being dumb but what are the rules about shooting it, not for self defense but just recreationally

No different than shooting any gun recreationally. Maybe I don't understand what you are asking....

But he's a fishing guide out on the water 300 days of the year?

I hold a 100 ton Masters Captains license. A big problem i see is that someone with certifiable mental disorders is issued a Merchant Mariner Credential by the US Coast Guard to be able to run charters for hire on coastal waters.
I as well but I still want to know about the "100% disabled" by the VA.
I've never served...
But my understanding it isn't that hard to get to 100% disability with the VA
my kids baseball coach is 100% disabled vet.. he doesn't have anything seemingly physically wrong with him.. he gets around the baseball diamond just fine anyway.

I know nothing about it.
Disability isn't just physical. And there's lots of physical injury not apparent from someone just walking around.

TA has a weird fixation on VA disability. It's like teachers.

VA math adds up. It's not linear but pretty sure for most that have high ratings it's usually one or two "big" things and a plethora of small ones that have individual ratings. Which are then collectively computed to get a final rating. And it is such a case by case thing for most claims that it's kinda wild actually the disparity of outcomes.

And despite the abuse that does occur, there is no mistaking that it takes a team of trained personnel to approve a rating. You need three things for a claim. A verifiable event that happened in service to cause/worsen it, a current diagnosis, and a medical write up from a doctor saying the first two are undoubtedly linked. And THEN the process can really start. It is often viewed as the vet vs the VA when going through it.

It's just bad practice to assume we know everything about someone for looking "fine". It's ignorant and judgmental. And on the veterans side, some REALLY need to learn to STFU about their ratings. Because it always engenders hostility and jealousy from others. And also because it's weird and doesn't needed to be treated as something to lord over others. Which some do of course. Case in point, our plucky boat captain here.

I think it roots deeper.

American culture has an odd fixation for anything we deem as a "shortcut".

A recent cultural example would be GLP-1 agonists. So now we have a pharmaceutical solution to help people who have a detrimental relationship with food, but as a culture we hate the shortcut. So using an RX to lose weight and break the cycle of addiction to processed foods is seen as cheating. It needs to be done the "hard way" - slow process weight loss with exercise, caloric restriction, and sheer will power.

Same goes with the VA disability issue that you pointed out so well. If we can't "see" the disability? Then we deem the that person as healthy enough, and they somehow cheated the system.

Lots of examples from our culture. If it doesn't fit the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps and make something from nothing" storyline, then we reject it as being less.

*All to say: I hope this boat capt spends some time in jail. He won't. But it would be nice.

If someone was cheating the system the person I would suspect first is the hot headed asshat thats been arrested 16-17 times for various reasons?

Just figured there would be anti-fun laws regarding firearms out on the water. Public land is fine for plinking. Rivers used to be but not anymore.

Wrong - as a culture we love to absolve ourselves of blame and play the victim mentality for things that are 100% within our control. Your detrimental relationship with food is the lack of self control and taking Ozempic does nothing to correct that problem...

Oh it's not my relationship with food. I was just using it as an example of our cultural view of perceived shortcuts

2:35 mark is where they discuss the role of GLP-1 in weight management, and the moral and philosophical debates of its use. Might provide a different view, if you're interested.

I am very well aware of Peter Attia and most of his stuff. This does nothing to refute what I posted earlier... people don't want to be held accountable for their actions.

I'm glad there is an easy button that can help people avoid an untimely death or chronic sickness, but this is 100% preventable. I'm not going to derail anymore but if you want to talk on the H&F board, we can discuss there.

Bingo.

My only beef with it, or any "handicapped" rating is that some people LOVE to say it. Some folks love to tell us how they are disabled like it's some kind of weird conversation piece. The same ones love to get mad when you don't give military discounts as if they are somehow entitled to it.

For the vets or civilians that are disabled, if you mention it, I'm going to ask "nice, so what do you have?" I figure if you feel it's worth mentioning, then it must be worth talking about. I don't mention my medical issues so I figure theirs must be really rad. I'll pry hard.

Personally, if you meet the criteria, then you meet the criteria. That's the system. Take advantage of it otherwise.

The greatest charter captain that ever lived or ever will live makes $800/wk and has no assets. Also, he said he was a fully disabled Army Ranger Paratrooper... but has no veterans benefits?

And you guys won't believe this... he didn't have a charter captains license at all. Parks and Wildlife sent him some infractions.

Not uncommon for unscrupulous guides to put their charter equipment (boat, outboard, tow vehicle) in their wife's name to get around the warranty issues of using said equipment commercially.
