Anyone heard anything about an active shooter at the NCA nationals Cheer competition in Dallas?

We are across town at another cheer comp. Some of our teams are at NCA and confirmed via text to the coaches here that it is indeed on going. No other info.

Read that it was just a fight amongst parents and no shooting. From local Dallas news on twitter.

This is what I heard too.

Fight between parents, not "active shooter".

Latest I've seen.

Better than an active shooter, but man. Parents fighting at kids competitions really underscores just how badly we are failing our kids. Dang.

Yeah, I think that is all it was. In the moment everyone thought it was. Thank the Lord!

It hasn't been about kids for a long time. All sports at all levels bout that $$$.

Wife and oldest are there now. Mixed reports but total chaos. Wish I was at this convention… I carry for every single of these just in case.

Cheer parents are insane. Especially cheer moms and I feel for the dads too. Some just look so broken & dejected they look on the verge of eating a bullet.

IMHO the parental craziness of youth sports (and cheerleading like this is basically coordinated team gymnastics) is from worst to least terrible:
1) hockey
2) cheerleading
3) AAU/travel basketball
4) football, travel baseball & softball are probably tied
7) travel soccer
8) league baseball/t-ball
9) lacrosse
10) swimming

This isn't a call I want to ever receive again. My daughter's group (8-9 y.o.) had just wrapped up their awards ceremony.

Wife: "If you see anything on facebook or twitter about a shooting where we are at, we are okay. I'm not sure what happened but people just started running while we were outside, but we're okay. There are at least 20 cops already on site"

I'm so glad it ended up being nothing, but that feeling of helplessness being 5 hours away from your wife and daughter is terrifying. Props to my wife for staying calm and getting my daughter to safety quickly.

This is the last screenshot someone sent me

Man, is this really necessary considering what (could have) happened? Have your opinions, but how about some situational understanding for those of us that had people there.

Did you mean to reply to this message? I have no idea why you would be offended by this statement.

So now there is a "too soon" rule for events that didn't happen but potentially could have?

My bad, I keep forgetting that we live in a time where asking a question about someone's comment equates to being offended.

Not offended. I just didn't have the benefit of knowing the outcome, like you two, in the moment. But hey, carry on!

My dad supplied security and crowd control with himself and many of his deputies at the high school football games in our town.
He was left with no choice but to put a crazy dad in handcuffs one night…the guy had come out of the stands and got in the coaches face because he would not play his son.
He finally got the dad to calm down and go back to the stands and sit.

We live in a society where there's too much money making involved with kids sports these days and now every parent thinks their kid will be a pro athlete. Let the kids play multiple sports. If they are a stud in a sport go the specialized route once they are developed and 11 or 12 years old. The fun has been removed from kids sports. I've seen way too many kids get burnt out playing year round baseball etc. Let the kids be kids and enjoy life. Too many people are trying to live their lives through their kids being the ball player (or cheer leader, etc) they never were.

Two of my daughters competed at this this weekend (both got first place). Oldest finished up about 30 minutes before this took place, so we took off for home. We had two teams warming up when everything went to crap. They all hid in a private room.

No actual shooter, but the mass hysteria definitely did damage. Children and adults trampled and separated from families. Lots of injuries from the stampede of people.

There were 30k athletes there. That doesn't include coaches, family, workers.

Most here plan for disasters, shooters, home invasions, etc. Can't say I know what I would have done with 30k plus hysterical people stampeding through the convention center.

I generally agree with you but no kid should specialize in one sport at 11 or 12-years old.

One of the guys that was fighting knocked down some large poles that sounded like shots. That led to people running, yelling "shooter" and that snowballed.

According to the wife it was absolute chaos. My oldest was pancaked along with half of her team. Kids were thrown out of strollers and it was not pretty.

All because someone's Dads either drank too much or just can't not behave like feral animals in public.

Just saying 11 or 12 is better than these kids already playing year round select ball at 7, 8, 9, and 10. If your kid is a stud around middle school and only wants to play one sport then great. Most of the stud pro athletes never specialized in 1 sport. They played multiple through high school. My kids won't be involved in any select stuff. My oldest son plays soccer, swims summer league, plays baseball and basketball. I'm just happy he enjoys it and stays active. If he starts to excel as he gets older in one and wants to stop a few others then great. I'm not planning on him getting a scholarship or being a professional one day. I'm not delusional like all these crazy parents with their kids in sports these days.

I didn't say who was crazy but if you're gonna own it, yes, in context, your reply was way off the mark for what was said. Just my opinion and I assure you I'm not mad enough to fight about it on the internet.

Females screaming in the background always helps de-escalate a situation such as this one. Never fails.

Actually they should be in jail facing charges for each person that was injured in the mayhem.

Parents are the reason we stopped playing travel ball. My kid said it was no fun hearing parents berate the umpires and ending up in screaming matches behind home plate.

He plays catcher and was just over the BS.

plays HS ball now and doesn't miss the drama.

Between the time spent on social media and sports, when do kids get to be kids?
