I'm looking to add a good old fashion pump shotgun to my home defense armada. Where is the best place to get one? What kind would you recommend? Don't need anything fancy.

So many good options available today, but I think the smart thing is to know your budget, needs, wants, and stick to it. Don't overthink it. Stick with tried and true manufacturers like Mossberg, Remington, Winchester, etc. Don''t go cheap (unless that is all you can afford), and don't buy something that is too tricked out or tactical. Think flashlight, side saddle for more rounds, and shorter barrel or stock for indoor purposes. There are going to be a ton of great references coming on this thread, so take some time and do your homework for the right purchase. Get comfortable with the action, get comfortable cleaning it, get comfortable shooting it, and stow it away safely for when you ever need it, and I hope you never do!

Remington 870
Older Remington 870, I would be skeptical of one made in the last 10 or so years, Remington has had issues with QC on ther pump guns.

Best way to buy online is find the model you want, then head over to this website: https://gun.deals/

Its an aggregator that will find the best price for a specific sku in stock. Buy, ship to your preferred ffl, done.

Love 20ga Rem 870s. Have 10 or so set up for different things. And a 28ga Rem 870. I keep an eye out on Texas Gun Trader, Gunbroker, 2cool, TexAgs.

Yep
Bought my 870 at academy in 1999 for $200 plus tax

You couldn't pay me $500 for that gun right now.

Reliable workhorse and almost zero maintenance

Superior in Longview has a mossberg 590 retro right now. I have always wanted one. Old school looking pump 18" barrel , wood furniture. Pretty sweet

There's a few models of firearms that we cannot keep on the shelf…Remington 870 is one of them. If we have an 870 on the shelf longer than a few days then it's overpriced.

Give your local shops your business. The last time Trump got in office, BCS had 3 gun shops go out of business within a year.

Yep, Walmart special... While the 870 has proven reliability over the years, probably not the same quality now as before either. I have an old 870 that was used as a paddle in the salty swamps of the Gulf of America on more than one occasion. Still kicking...

At $199 I did not think twice about it. At $499, probably paying a little more attention to salt and mud exposure.

The 870 is also very easy to break down, clean, oil and re-assemble.

What three businesses were those? Just curious, I've lived here since '10 and have only shopped at Champion and Burdett.

Agree 100%.

I can't remember the last time that I went to a local gun store and they didn't have a handful of used pump shotguns for sale.

The older used shotguns are usually of higher quality than the new ones. Pick up an old Winchester Model 12 and you can feel the difference.

Best Little Gun Shop in Texas out on 21 east, the one in the strip center with the hardware store and KFC on Texas in CS (run by a bunch of Marines who went out of business and had a lot of transfers locked up for months, formerly in Bryan by J Cody's) and a third that I can't remember offhand.

I remember the one by the KFC, the transfers that were held up caused a bit of a rukus around here.

Have an older 870 and love it, don't know about these issues but have heard about them. The Mossberg 590 is dang near invincible, heard to be it and its price.

ETA: go to a local gun store like other have suggested, or look for places that have coupons, gift cards you've got, or something to take off a little extra

CDNN in Abilene has 10% off all shotguns.

And a crap ton of cheap ones from no-name brands.

Consider Bass Pro/Cabela's gun library. You find what you want (used) on the network, call, purchase, then have them ship it to the local store at no additional fee.

The one on 21 was a nice store with nice owners. The last time I saw a S&W 3rd model 44 hand ejector locally was there. They got broken into at least once. I think it was after Sandy Hook, reloading supplies as well as ammo became near unobtanium but that place didn't rip off their customers with the last remaining inventory they had.
