Lawn was looking pretty good before we left, came home to find it like this. Would appreciate any tips on the process to identify and treat the cause. St. Augustine on Lake Livingston.

Not an expert. My guess is chinch bugs.

I'd head to Home Depot and get a pesticide and a fungicide.

Brown patch
It was wet or at least really damp and then overnight temperatures started to drop
It's a fungus. Some say do nothing ..some say to spray or put down granules from big box store

It's about to go dormant so it's a quiet how much the coloration bothers you

Could be worse. Try having a sounder of large hogs root up your front yard…..

Probably the worst brown patch I've ever seen. Cut the sprinklers off.

I resoded the backyard with Palmetto St. Augustine this spring. Then the derecho and hurricane took out most of the trees/shade that made me choose the Palmetto cultivar. But now I've got the worst brown patch I've ever had. Gave it a 1-2 punch of Azprop granules and Mancozeb spray and plan on a follow up application next week.

Yeah, I read some stuff from Neil Sperry after posting earlier that pretty much called it as brown patch.

The "look" is bothersome but the affected areas are not likely coming back nice and green before going dormant.

"Lately there have been claims made that corn meal and a garlic extract is effective. This is absolutely false! even if these purveyors claim that a University tested and/or recommended the product. Everyone trying to do the "environmentally friendly-to-a-fault" thing have been wasting their money. They would have been better off making corn bread and using their garlic for cooking purposes!"

"Let me explain how these University tests and recommendations have been misrepresented in a desperate attempt to find an organic fungicide. The corn meal was investigated by a Texas A&M pathologist as a way to produce parasitic fungi used to control a fungus which occurs on peanuts if not planted in a crop rotation with corn. This is a very specific and very unusual parasitic fungi relationship which DOES NOT translate as a control for every other fungus on earth!"

If it's chinch bugs, you'll be able to see them based on that amt of damage…also, the lawn is toast and prolly have to re-sod as I think the bug damage is permanent

Spray lawn with diesel, light, controlled burn. It'll come back stronger!

My advice is to wait until spring and throw a bunch of Bermuda grass seed out there. San Augustine is just prone to too many issues.

Same thing I'm dealing with and had much better luck with quick control via the spray (concentrate in bottle you connect to the hose) as compared to the granules. I normally go the proactive approach with the granules but didn't do it this year since we had no measurable rainfall for such a long time. Paying for it now but the BioAdvanced Fungus Control seems to have halted it almost immediately.

If I were a single man, might be an option. Otherwise, that's probably a good way to achieve single status.

First one looks like crop circles. I'd have said aliens. Those saying brown patch are probably right.
