How long do you want to ignore this user?
I retired last year. Now with the extra time I've decided to fish.

As a boy we fished ponds for catfish and perch and absolutely loved it. I'dlike to up the game. Area lakes and surf at Bolivar.
We actually fished trout two weeks ago in Broken Bow, Ok.

I used my son in laws rod.

Any recommendations for a newbie on equipment? I own nothing. Going to the local Bass Pro to ask these same questions but you guys really know your stuff.

Gracias.

First decision will be baitcast or spinning reel…

You are probably going to get full systems overload by all kinds of advice…. and it will all have merit…..but will probably confuse the heck out of you.
Same will happen in all the isles after isles of brands and types of baits, rods, reels etc at Bass Pro.
I would suggest to decide what specie of fish you are most interested in. Or maybe you just want to go fish and catch whatever you can… which is great.
Second suggestion is to go with a guide on whatever you want to target and learn and use their equipment. Get some hands on experience of what they know and use.
That way you can go after different species with a guide, gain some experience and knowledge, and put together a want list from what you have learned and used.

Penn battle combo. Great reel and ok rod for most Texas applications. Medium or med light. 12 pound mono. Do that for a while, then you will figure out what you want to do different.

Shimano reels, medium heavy action rods and Gary Yamato Senkos. 1 rigged wacky and 1 rigged straight with an EWG hook. A spinnerbait or bladed jig rig and a buzzbait rig. That's really all you need but you will end up with a lot more than that.

I would shop at academy over bass pro. More bang for buck

I'd start with medium spinning rod and reel. Shimano and Penn reels are great
The Penn combo mention would be good starter. Very versatile of going after bass or saltwater fish. Finesse fishing with worms or jigs in salt or Carolina rigs or popping corks

Get a trip on my boat. I will bring a dozen different setups and explain why each is set up for different presentations. Then you can cast each one for however long and compare which one is most confident in your hands. Then you will know how you most enjoy targeting the fish you want.

Upper and middle coast. Inshore, nearshore, back lakes, and bayous. I have also coached several high school bass fishing teams.

And as a bonus you'll likely take home some table fare

I would plan a trip on a nearby lake with a guide. They will teach you where to fish, how to fish, and provide all the equipment. As stated above, start with a spinning reel. If you plan on bank fishing lakes around you, I would focus on catfish or bluegill. I would also check if there is a TPWD managed Neighborhood fishin pond around you. They will be stocked with rainbow trout during the winter, and catfish the rest of the year.

I really like my Shimano reels. Smooth as butter.

Had someone buy me a rod from Temple Fork Outfitters for Christmas. It is my favorite out the group.

In my opinion, spend a little more on the reel and don't drop it in the ocean.

Some great deals to be had out there on the Shimano Chronarch G still, I believe. We had a post about that here somewhere, but you are gonna need to throw one and throw a spinning reel also, to see what works best for ya. And I hope ya love fishing It's not all about the fish.
