Wow, this is the second year they are doing this.
If the price of groceries keeps going up, I may trade in some old rifles.

Gun owners can swap unwanted firearms for H-E-B gift cards which could collectively reach a balance up to $2,000 on Nov. 24 at the Alamodome.
District 9 Councilman John Courage will host the second annual Voluntary Weapons Xchange aiming to reduce gun violence in the city. The event will run from noon to 5:00 p.m. in the Alamodome parking lot.
Participants will receive one gift card per gun given up, according to KENS 5 TV. Shotgun and hunting rifles will earn its owner a $100 H-E-B gift card. For a pistol or a handgun, owners will get $150 gift card, while assault weapons and AR-15-style automatic rifles will get $200 gift cards, the news station reported. Gun owners cannot trade in more than 10 guns for gift cards.

Is HEB associated with this, or are HEB cards just what was chosen as the item to be exchanged?

Brandon Herrera made a video about the last one of these that they did. He showed up with a stack of cash & if they had anything that was worth the money, he'd pay more.

"Officials" got pissed off.

The OB should show up en masse at gun buy backs. That would be hilarious. Good deals to be had.

AR style pellet guns count for $200?

Turn $60 into $200

Crosman M4-177 Multi-Pump BB and Pellet Air Rifle https://a.co/d/1m8A8jK

X10 = $2000 in groceries for a $600

It does ay AR-15 style automatic rifles. I'm guessing they won't be getting many of those. Not that they understand the difference.

Does a lower receiver for an AR count. That is technically the firearm part per the govt.

$40 into $200

I wonder how many staffers and their families will be buying groceries with HEB gift cards over the next month?

You just know all the gang members and bad guys are going to flock there to exchange their guns for tortillas and cookies.
Who actually thinks this cuts down on gun violence?
And there are folks who voted to put these people in office.

I was just wondering if there's any law/rule against doing this. Can't get an AR for $200 anywhere else!

Absolutely no one with any critical thinking capability. Pure political stunt.

The only remotely possible effect I think anyone can successfully argue that this would have on gun violence is that I would bet most of these weapons are not locked up and would be easy loot during a burglary.

Otherwise, I don't have any real problem with people who know nothing about firearms wanting to offload some inherited item for a gift card (instead of trying to deal with selling outright), as long as those gift cards aren't funded by public money.

ETA - looks like last years event was funded primarily by the "San Antonio Area Foundation". I know nothing about them, but looking at their board, they are most likely not conservatives.

I think some guy 3D printed a bunch of lowers and cashed out at one of these

https://amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/oct/11/new-york-gun-buyback-rules-3d-printed-parts

Yes, there's the article. Guy made $21,000

Quote:

At the buyback, the seller turned in 60 printed auto sears, small devices that can convert firearms into fully automatic weapons. Under the rules of the buyback, hosted by the office of the attorney general, Letitia James, and city police, that entitled him to $350 for each of the printed parts, including a $100 premium, since they were deemed "ghost guns" lacking serial numbers.
The seller, who declined to provide his real name, said in an email on Monday the prospect of making money was enticing, but that the big reason he took part in the buyback was to send a message.
He called the idea of buybacks "ridiculously stupid", adding that "the people running this event are horribly uneducated about guns, gun crime and the laws surrounding the regulation of guns".
