Sounds like about 50 acres burning in or near the state park. Strong winds have caused the fire to jump the first line attempted. Scanner is reporting multiple spot fires outside of main fire. Started as a structure fire on Felix Rd. 0% contained.

ETA: Fire is between Bastrop and Buescher SPs off of Cottletown and Felix Roads.

https://tfswildfires.com/public/ Calling it the Hudson Fire.

Bastrop EMS scanner if you want to listen: https://www.broadcastify.com/webPlayer/40578

1640: 200 Ac estimate now. Opening a shelter at the Smithville Recreation Center.

I took a shower at Buescher Friday night. Dry as a bone around there

Yeah,I live on the west side of Bastrop and we have not gotten meaningful rainfall in at least 2 months. Most of what has fallen around Austin and down towards LaGrange and Giddings has just skipped us entirely.

Does remind me of 2010. Only difference is the extreme winds then.

It is blowing about 20 with gusts probably over 30 right now.

Fire has jumped north of Park Road 1C and is spreading in the canopy.

Watching on ForeFlight looks like multiple air units on scene, getting water from Lake Bastrop.

They have a Blackhawk and two smaller tankers flying. Sounds like they have a VLAT getting ready somewhere to head towards the fire, but I didn't catch where it is coming from. Hopefully it is one out of Bergstrom.

Right flank is "looking good" according to scanner after a few drops. Sounds like left flank is still growing.

1640 update: 200 Acres. Sounds like it is two fires…alpha and zeta. Looks like 4 choppers and 2 planes dropping on it.

Our place is about 1/2 mile north of Goiter Trace on Antioch Road, CottleTown ends at GT cemetery intersection. Best I can tell it's staying a little west of us but winds are bad and can change everything. Does anyone know if the fire has crossed Goiter Trace yet? I am only getting info from Bastrop Emergency FaceBook District 2 page

I have only heard that it crossed Park Road 1C, but nothing beyond that. Have not been listening to the scanner much in last couple of hours. There is a link to the scanner page up at the top you can listen to.

1820 update: 400 acres and 10% contained. Sounds like containment is mostly on south end.

Watch Duty app is pretty good too. Good info and updates. Their fire perimeter is showing it has not crossed Gotier yet, but forward progress has not been stopped yet.

Was looking for the fire on Google Maps. Appears to be closer to Buecher than Bastrop to me. But while looking for it, I noticed it is just west of the famous LUECKE forest.

Approximate fire area circled (if I am correct)

It is in between the two parks. Park Road 1C that crosses E-W through the northern portion of the fire outline goes from Bastrop to Buescher SP. the Fire watch app link I posted above has a fire boundary layer you can turn on over the imagery to see where it is relative to roads and residences.

I'm in Giddings. It's been skipping us too.

I don't know why, but the area north of Alum Creek catches fire every few years.

Let's just say there are some interesting characters hidden off in those pines- from there to the north in LBA and Circle D Estates

This one started as a structure fire, but it seems like at least once a week I see scanner traffic about a fire getting out of control from somebody burning trash, even though we have been in a burn ban forever.

I looked at buying down in Tahitian Village back in early 2023. After seeing Ursusguy's opinion of the fire danger down there, I started looking closely and those houses down there are death traps if they get a fire started along 71 and have a north wind. Lots of dense, perennially dry trees right up against houses and power lines and only a couple of egress routes out to safety that could easily be blocked.

I think it also has to do with the density of the regrowth after the big fire. TPWD is understandably reluctant to use prescribed fire on their land since their last one got away from them, but the properties in between the parks are just as dense with fuel and there is no organized program to thin it out safely.

Still around 400 acres. They reportedly have dozer line completely around the fire and think they have forward progress stopped. Last I saw was 30% containment, mostly because there is still fire burning in the interior with unburned areas. Still somewhat gusty today, but we have been getting a light drizzle and it has been very moist overnight and this am which has slowed the fire activity.

They need to do something differently. I'm amazed there's still people willing to build in that area.

We had some friends in Tahitian that were thankfully out of town during the big one in '11. Their house burned down to the foundation.

Humidity is up and rain and wind reversal forecast. Should drive it back on itself and help sniff it out by tonight.

They can't do prescribed burns on new growth pine forest because it burns it ALL and gets out of control until the trees mature and get some height. They need the density of young trees early on because some of them die as they forest grows and matures. Once they are tall enough and the density is low, the undergrowth can be burned without threatening the tree crowns of mature trees.

That was 2011 in one of the worst Texas droughts.
