If you're going pistol route, get him a Staccato or Nighthawk Custom with a Southern Trapper Holster (made in Charleston btw).

For rifle route, go full custom wood/steel bolt gun but not in 30.06. Go 6mmPRC, 6.5 Creedmoor, or maybe 270.

I have a 30.06. We've all shot them. It's classic and can be bought anywhere. But, it's not enjoyable to shoot at all. Because of that, I'd pick something with less felt recoil.

There are guys on here that can point you to places that build custom wood stocks that will make your willy tingle. The only downside to those is that they're more susceptible to damage.
An advantage to synthetic stocks is you can have it custom cerakoted into anything.

Still, pros/cons aside, I'd charter a custom wood stock rifle, have the receiver engraved, and pick a caliber that will be more enjoyable to shoot but also lethal for whatever game he will hunt most often.

Go with the 30-06 and take him hunting.

This is a great idea. There a a lot of places where you 2 can have a great experience. I'll point to Montgomery Properties in Jacksboro. I took my son there 2 years ago. We had a blast.
