The duration of totality is longer on the center line but otherwise the experience will be similar. Up to you if it is worth the hassle of dealing with traffic to experience darkness for another minute or so.

You can compare different locations here:
https://eclipse2024.org/eclipse_cities/statemap.html

Looks like only about a 1 minute difference. Assuming all else is equal, think we'll avoid the crowds. Thanks a bunch!

I've been planning to top off around San Antonio on the way put, if not closer to garner. I think Friday afternoon I should be ok. Bringing our own food of course.

Anyone fished the park before? Haven't been in at least 25 maybe 30 years. My youngest will want to fish while there. He'll be happy with bluegill, but bass would be great.

America is Babylon the Great Harlot and it's written will be destroyed in one day. (from the tweet)

Well, at least I'll remember what happened on my birthday this year.

To rent….or not to rent?

Our place is in Hondo less than an hour from Garner. We're private on 30 acres with oak canopy and open pasture about 5 mins from the last HEB and Walmart for the Garner masses.

I can't decide if I'm willing to open the gate to strangers or not. What say you OB? Worth the hassle to let others enjoy totality and/or boondock for the right $$$?

If any responsible folks are interested in a larger primitive campsite / RV spot on a ranch in Utopia (pretty much dead centerline of the eclipse) for much less than $600, drop me a PM.

You laugh...but they've already sold out all the smaller spots. Can't blame him for getting some revenue from the place.

The freakin Hampton Inn in Uvalde wanted $1000/night with a two night minimum when I looked 5 months ago.

The eclipse strip is making bank that weekend.
That's nuts. Wonder what hotels are like for just outside the totality strip?

I'll rent spots in my yard outside Wimberley for $400 a night

Ok…thinking $300 gets you 1/4 acre "clear sky plot" with a round bale for ambiance (and shelter when the world ends). For an extra couple hundred I'll have the beer iced down when you get here and give you a gallon of gas to start the trek home. We'll do a 50% off for TexAgs family. Unlimited tractor driving package is available and a three dog petting zoo.

How many slots do you want at the RiffRaff Hondo Totality Ranch?

I've heard Junction has the highest probability of clear skies. However, there has been a lot of cloudy days lately. Supposedly many university and NASA people coming here. Totality here is around 3 minutes but longer further south.

Driving Houston to College station that Friday, then heading to Utopia that Saturday morning. Back to Houston Monday.

Guessing I should fill up with fuel in San Antonio Saturday morning and not count on fuel being available in the way home. F150 with a 35 gallon tank

We are heading to our place outside of Junction from College Station on Saturday and attempting to drive back right after the totality passes on Monday.

South of Kerrville for me (Kerrville Folk Fest grounds at Quiet Valley Ranch). Arriving Friday, leaving Tuesday. Saw my first partial in '79 and first total in '17 and haven't missed one since. Clouded out in '21. The hybrid in '23 was short (58sec) but insanely gorgeous. You could see the chromosphere for half of totality as the Moon and Sun were very close in relative size. Here's a single image I captured showing third contact (C3) and my "what it looked like" coronal stack. Safe travels and clear skies, y'all!

THE eclipse weather expert (Jay Anderson) has an excellent website that's worth a look. We are in that zone of moving from climate predictions into weather predictions! Exciting times; can't hurt to have a plan B! First real forecast models will include the 8th of April 10 days before the event.

Thats nothing more than a social media, Ercot "look at us". As far as they're concerned, it'll be no different than a thunderstorm and heavy clouds.

Definitely dreading this. Trying to decide if it is best to wait until late afternoon / evening to head back, or early (3am) the next morning, and/or detour south through Victoria and take 59 back into Houston instead of I-10.

The roads will be slammed just after totality (1:45p). By evening you should in a much better situation (6 or 7pm). If we do get the 1M+ people in Texas, 3am Tue might be the way! Keep an eye on the traffic data and your options open.

Got an email from Garner. Was concerned about being in the park after check out since our reservation ends on the 8th

The following options are available for Campers checking out on April 8th.
Option 1:
Vacate Campsite no later than 10:00 am.
This allows you to experience the Eclipse from somewhere other than your Campsite, ensuring you have a place to park in one of our pre-determined parking areas.
Option 2:
If you do not vacate before 10 am, you will need to wait and vacate Campsite between 2:00 pm-3:00 pm.
This allows traffic control of incoming campers and day-use visitors during the Eclipse Event.

We'll exercise option 2 and spend the eclipse on old baldy.

Tell us how many people were on Baldy when you are done. I'll bet it is crowded as heck.
