Any must eat places for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner in Fredericksburg these days?

Would prefer somewhere kinda upscale for dinner to take the wife. Maybe a good steak house? We're getting our first weekend night away since having 2 kids.

I haven't stopped there in awhile, usually just pass on through the tourist trap lol.

Otto's is a great low key place. Small, I'd recommend a reservation.

Nice cocktail list and some bourbon. Wine too.

We've only eaten at three different places in F-burg in the past 5 years, so will only comment on those. Two places I would *not* recommend are Rathskeller and Mamacita's Restaurants. Both had significant issues.

OTOH, we had an excellent meal at the Altstadt Brewery, which is just a few miles east of town on 290. My wife said the beer was pretty good too.

For steaks go to Jack's Chop House. Make a reservation. Crossroads is fun and right across from Hondos but their steaks have slid in quality.

For a great seafood and oyster bar place, go to Martini's. They have a good bar to. Small place no reservations. We usually check in and walk around and wait for them to call us.

For lunch with German Flare I like the Auslander, Otto's, but my favorite is Altdorf Biergarten. All are good though.

My wife really enjoy's breakfast at Hill & Vine.

Woerner Warehouse Cafe is a great lunch spot as well. They have sandwiches, salad, and pizza that are all pretty solid. Your wife will like walking around and looking at the $20k dining tables, glassware, and other crap they have in there to sell.

Also fine dining but it's hard to go wrong with Cabernet Grill or August E's. August E's has a great bar and their wild game trio is great.

If you want to drive and see the hill country head to Llano for the Sunday Brunch at the Barrel House.

One of the best steaks I've had in the area is at the Barrel House in Llano. I'd tell you to go there for dinner, but if your driving back to Fred, Hwy 16 at night can be a real doozy unless you have a big bumper and grill guard and don't mind mowing down deer like speed bumps.

We drive all over to eat in the hill country. When I first got here I thought people were crazy, but after you eat at the same restaurants for a year, you start realizing a 40 minute drive to go eat someplace different is worth it.

Damn, I'm gunna have to remember the Barrel House. That menu looks great! I go through Llano all the time. My Moms from Brady and my parents have a lake house there so I'm up there a couple times a year. I pass through Fredericksburg when I go the other way. Just nothing like when I was a kid, way overrun with people. So it's usually whataburger and back on the road again. I'm in Dripping Springs so I can go either way once I hit Johnson City.

Was there about a month ago for a quick trip, was wrapping up a dry January and had not had a carb in the month as well.

Had dinner at Pasta Bella one evening and thought it was pretty good. Not fancy, but tasty. Granted, did not have a carb in 4 weeks, so any carbs would have tasted great.

Texas Sunrise was pretty good on breakfast as well. Not fancy but a good breakfast spot.

Old German Bakery - pastries (RIP Dietz)

LUNCH/DINNER:

Hondo's - burgers, nachos, bar, etc

Clear River pecan - sandwiches and ice cream

Alamo Springs - burgers, about a 15 min drive

Pecan Grove - about 10 min out of town

Martinis - seafood/bar (think lobster roll, shrimp cocktail type of seafood)

Sozial Haus - pizza, sandwiches, beer/wine

OVERALL:

- good pizza (West End, Prometheus, Sozial Haus)

Not new new but the Hitchin' Post in Fredericksburg is supposedly better than the original in Ozona

Specifically for the OP…

Steak I had at Hill and Vine was really good…and it's an upscale sort of place…but I've heard hit and miss things since then

Backwoods BBQ has solid steaks on Friday's (still?)…but it's a laid back BBQ joint

Crossroads used to have a good steak, nice place with a fun bar and live music in the adjoining building

Honestly…none of them beat what I could do at home, so I didn't go out for steak much…but those are solid and shouldn't disappoint

Other than steak…

Hit one of those pizza spots

Ditto for burgers

Breakfast - get a taco at Hildas or David's, pastries at Old German Bakery, or full breakfast at Sunset (get there early)

Hondo's for drinks and lunch

For a nice dinner…Granite Lounge, Martinis, or Hill and Vine (maybe?)

If I was coming into town on a Friday:

Friday pm at martinis (seafood) or West End Pizza

Sat am at Hildas or David's for tacos

Sat lunch at Alamo Springs or Pecan grove (burgers)

Sat pm steaks at Jacks Chophouse? (Never been there, but given the options, I would give it a shot)

Sun am - Davids BBQ for tacos or Old German Bakery

Sun lunch - Hondos

Unless things have changed substantially, you won't be disappointed with any of the places I listed.

Vaudeville…I can't personally vouch for, but it's probably the swankiest place in town

Hill & Vine…could be really good…or disappointing with a big bill

Go ahead and remove David's from your list. They've slowly gotten worse with time on both breakfast tacos and bbq.

Backwoods is pretty good and the owners are very nice folks.

Eaker is a Texas Monthly top 25 bbq joint and it's damn good.

Dang…their potato/bacon/egg/cheese used to be damn good…BBQ was always so/so

I know about Eaker, but never tried it…was leary of the Korean twist

Best BBQ you will get in that town is a local (not move in) cooking pork roast over coals for a wedding or get together…but that won't help you unless you know somebody

This is great list. Alamo Springs is the one place I'd eat lunch every day if I could. I love burgers though.

If you drive a little further up the road to San Saba go to the Pecan House Grill. Look them up they have some good stuff.

If you go from dripping to Fred and go up 87 south of Mason you will run into Hill Top Cafe in Cherry Springs. It's a must stop. Owned by Johnny Nicholas from Asleep At the Wheel. He plays on Friday nights when he's in the mood. The food is awesome. Their food is not what you'd expect way out in the middle of nowhere.

Was coming here to say the same thing. The pumpernickel from Dietz with butter and dried sausage is one of my favorite memories, and Hilda's is far and away the best mexican in town.

If Friedhelm's is still/back open you can't go wrong there. Whatever you order, make sure and get the spaetzle as one of your sides

Hondo's is my favorite place in town. The burgers, CFS, and frito pie are all great.

If you're there early on a Friday head out the Austin highway just past Walmart to Dutchman's Market. They smoke sausage and one other meat every Friday (this week is pork roast).

West End and Sozial Haus both have great pizza.

Many local weddings used to have loaves of Dietz bread to serve with the BBQ at the reception.

Line used to go around the block and they would be out of the good stuff by 9am on Saturday. This was in the days of courting my wife, a local.

MIL would buy a couple loaves at a time, one to eat now, one for the freezer…

And "kolaches"/PIB/koblasniky" for days worth of breakfasts…good cure for the George Dickel my FIL insisted we share each night before…

Story is…when they closed…they took the recipes with them…wouldn't sell them. Guess they took them to the grave…

Hope my (outdated?) list gives you a happy and full belly.

Good memories…

Breakfast at Nury's Cuisine and dinner at Granite House when we went for new years was fantastic. I do enthusiastically recommend both.

If I go to Fredericksburg, I'm eating German food. It's harder to find these days.

You won't be sorry, not many folks can cook authentic I have found. There is a place in Lampasas, and several in Fredericksburg.

Hit up Eaker for lunch if you want to do BBQ. The "korean fusion" is all optional but damn good and unique in a good way. There is a reason it made Top 25 in Texas Monthly.

Eaker or Backwoods for BBW

Alamo Springs or Pecan Grove for burgers

August E's, Cabernet Grill (reservations several days in advance, usually), Hill & Vine for a nice meal

Hye Thai or Nan's (pick up only) for Asian

78624 The Bar or Chase's Place for a good drink

Mexican food in this town is an overall disappointment with the exception of one place and I don't my wait to be longer with more people showing up.

I am only looking for German Food if in Fredericksburg also.
Just saw that Margaret's German Restaurant closed in Tulsa at the end of 2023.
They are drying up everywhere.
Maybe we need a list of Texas German Food Restaurants anyway.

Not food, but dessert and drinks; Piccolina's on Main. Owned and run by an Ag.
